Can we talk about the unique experience of genuinely not knowing what haircuts to even consider when you’re black??? Because like… “short hair” happens with both black men and black women, bald/shaved happens with both, long happens with both, braids and locs happen with both, afros happen with both

It took me forever to figure out that I can do all of the variations I’d been doing, just that the unique styling is different on these gender lines.

As a Black trans man who wants a hair cut really bad, it’s hard for me to even visualize a buzz cut on a Black person. Like I see so many posts helping trans men out with how they would look if they got a hair cut, but pretty much all of them have white people as examples. Trans men of color are THAT invisible to the point to were I’ve convinced myself that I wouldn’t look good with short hair.

Sure, I can look up pics of Black men with a buzz cut but 99.9% of them are gonna be cis Black men, folks I look nothing like. And if I add in trans, I’m scared that instead of getting articles about hair cuts, I’m gonna articles about violence we’ve faced over these past few years.

I wanna see sites and articles discussing Black hair and styles for Black trans people. If there’s a site for it, I’d like to know dearly and I want that shit to be boosted to high hell because resources for Black hair, let alone for Black trans people aren’t really around. Especially when it comes to Black folks with 4c hair, like myself.

At the end of the day, no Black trans men or Black trans person in general should be convincing themselves that they’d look ugly with shorter or longer hair, just because they can’t seem themselves being represented anywhere. It shouldn’t get to that point. Ever.

You’re right, even trying to google black trans masc hairstyles mostly just gets you white people with white people hair. Yeah sorry that’s literally not possible with my hair texture.

I’ve sort of had to… make things up as I go along. Like you, I was told repeatedly that my hair texture does not look good when cut short. It took me a very long time to want to try a shorter style as a result. It took me even longer to say fuck it, big chop, and shave my head bald. There. Starting fresh.

What I’ve found has been working for me is to first figure out what hair texture you have. I find just googling “black male hairstyle” will get you mostly 4c hair which is great for those who have it and the facial structure to match! And less great for those who don’t! With me having 3b/3c hair, I was able to find a number of short styles on a wide variety of faces and thus was able to figure out what worked best for how I like to look. And it did take some experimentation and trust, but it ultimately made me really appreciate taking the time to actually do my hair rather than feeling like it was this massive chore.

Once you find your hair texture, you need to do two things:

Figure out what hairstyles you like best with your hair texture. Avoid gendered terms if you can. If you want a short style, look for short styles. If you want a long style, look for long styles. BLACK MEN CAN AND DO WEAR THEIR HAIR LONG frequently as an afro, braids, or locs. It’s up to you to then decide if that long look is something you’re interested in, and how to masculinize it if so. Personally, I prefer the ever popular shaved sides look, and eventually will be getting braids or locs with the length on the top depending if my 3b/3c hair will actually cooperate with locs. I did the fro look for a while and I’ve had cornrows but for the most part I put some product in it and wear my natural curls that way. Protective styling is a big big thing with black men even though it’s mostly only spoken about in the context of female styles. I had a really long conversation with a black coworker about protective styles and how he chooses to do his hair, which is actually longer than mine.

And, figure out the best care for your hair texture. For me, I have a rotating schedule of oil to rub into my scalp and shea butter pomade to style with when wearing my hair natural. All those selfies of mine, if my hair is free, it’s got one of the two in it. I got a lot better about protecting my hair at night, using a leave-in overnight and the day after wash day. Being consistent on the timing of wash day. I use black owned shampoo and conditioner in my hair made specifically for black men. I use a durag and a sport cap to protect my hair on days when its most prone to damage. My hair has never been healthier and I’ve never been happier with the way I can wear and style it.

It was a huge transition for me because I used to have waist-length hair and then shaved my head bald about a year and a half ago to start over and build a better routine than semi resentment from the ground up.

As there are a number of different styles besides just shaving your head completely bald, and depending on your comfort level, you can try out a good deal of them before making a firm decision on what exactly you want your head to look like.

You can also do like me and just walk into a barber shop and tell them that you have to play a male character for a production and you have no idea what to do with your hair and see if they’ll help you, but I recommend only doing that if you’re willing to get a “we don’t cut girl hair” while you’re trying it. I did that the first time I cut my hair short and to his credit he did cut my hair fairly short and style it well, but it was still far too feminine for me, so I explored a lot of options after that.

Hrt is 100% illegal for minors here and the state is trying to make it illegal for anyone under 25. Do you know if there will actually be any significant changes if I were to start at either 18 or 25? I want to go on t once I’m able but I don’t know if it will be worth the money if I’m too old. 25 doesn’t seem old to me but everyone says that once you hit 18 you might as well not bother cause it won’t do enough. I’m very feminine looking, and very short, and I’ve been scary skinny and malnourished most of my life, so even if I had started at like 11 when my natural puberty started I’m not sure I would ever have actually looked like a man.

Well first off, if someone tries to convince you (or anyone) that going on HRT after you turn 18 is "worthless", they are a dirty liar you should not trust. So many people go on HRT after 18, after 25, and older. It is absolutely worth pursuing if you want it no matter how old you are when you have the chance.

I couldn't convince my parents to let me go on HRT until I was 18, and can pass as a cis guy if I want to, and I have extremely obvious hips (which my mom suspects have changed a bit since being on T but honestly I haven't been paying attention), and I'm also short. Honestly people going on HRT at the same time cis people go through puberty is a really modern thing. Starting as a teen requires the combination of accepting parents + enough money + realizing you are trans and vocalizing your need for HRT at the right time. Most trans people start after they are 18!

Its definitely worth pursuing HRT when you are able to get it. If you ever decide to make a fundraising post (for HRT or moving to a different state or both) feeling free to tag me & I'll reblog it.

i started at 28 and used to be pretty feminine, even when i tried to present masc, and now after 7 months on t i am able to at least confuse some cis people. my hips seem to be shrinking a bit though i’m not sure if that’s just me seeing what i want to see, but i am for sure getting way harrier and my voice is dropping pretty significantly. there are trans guys who have gone on t in their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s. it’s never too late.

There is a pretty robust and vibrant 30+ crowd who are later in life transitioners and let me tell you, we are awesome. We are hot, we are living our best lives and the only time it’s too late is when you’re dead. Young folk who are being gatekept, you have my sympathy and my heart goes out to you. I wish the world wasn’t a trash fire and that you could have access to affirming care as soon as you want it. But also at some point you will be an adult too. And you will be able to exercise a lot more control over your own medical decisions. It’s not too late. I am truly sorry if you are stuck waiting. But it will not be the end of your world please just stick it out.

my god if I never hear another trans youth fretting it's too late for them past 18 it will be too soon. (this is not directed at anon - you were given misinformation and it's not your fault "you're too old past 18 to start HRT" is such a prevalent myth. people are lying to y'all.) you can start HRT at any age and it will do a lot of heavy lifting. that is just how hormones work!

I started HRT at just shy of 48 years old. it was 10000% worth it and has done wonders for my mental (and physical) health.

Gc2b Binders No Longer Reputable

I've been away, so y'all may already be very aware of this, but I want to make sure it's stated on this blog because it's been The Brand for yeeeaaars: the quality of gc2b binders has been going downhill the past few years. People who bought from them prior and recently can attest to how poor the quality has become. The binders are just not the same. The material isn't comfortable and, more importantly, the fit just isn't good. People who've tried recent gc2b binders, even those who've been binding for years, are suffering from back and muscle pain, stiff shoulders, soreness, etc. regardless of fit. The material just doesn't seem to be suitable for binding anymore. It is also degrading really quickly and binders are wearing out in a matter of months. It is no longer worth it to buy from gc2b.

You'll want to keep your eye on brands that are still doing good work: Spectrum Outfitters (UK), For Them (seems to be a hate it or love it company; I know some who swear by them and others who feel they dont' really sell actual binders - just sports bras/lighter compression tops), Shapeshifters (good custom work and larger sizing), and Underworks (best budget brand).

I don't know how well they fit bigger sizes (I'm a large) but for me the fit is great and I've had almost no discomfort wearing my binder, whereas with my old gc2b binder I had frequent aches in my ribs and back

i am once again hyping amor binders. they're on the pricey side, but the quality is BONKERS good, and if you're in the larger end (i was a 36H before top surgery) they have a line specifically designed for larger chests, which offers elastic around the bottom to keep everything from slipping out (i always slipped out of my gc2bs even when they were good) and FULL RANGE OF MOTION IN THE SHOULDERS with a racerback that's still wide enough to be supportive.

they're australia-based so if you're stateside like me it takes a bit of time and money to ship but GENUINELY they're worth it

I can't believe it. They passed the new trans law in Finland, allowing adult trans people to change their legal gender without having to provide lengthy documentation from doctors. It passed. I am so fucking happy. I know people who've been waiting for years to get their gender recognized by a doctor to get treatments. I can't believe it. Really can't.

If you're trans -- if you have a gender identity that doesn't exactly match the gender you were assigned at birth, regardless of whether you have transitioned or intend to and whether you're nonbinary -- and live in the US, ok and are 16 or older, you are eligible to fill out the 2022 US Trans Survey, crafted by trans people.

This is a big deal, it's the largest national trans survey and the last one was in 2015. The next one won't be for at least another five years.

There's some fairly personal questions and some heavy ones, like ones about harassment and domestic violence. They don't ask for your name or other definitively identifying information, and take steps to keep the rest of the data confidential. You can skip (most) questions you don't want to answer while filling out the rest. Data can be useful for lobbying politicians for things that are good for trans people, especially ones who are basically sympathetic but not sure they should prioritize trans issues. (In their words, "The USTS fills in some of the large gaps in research about transgender people, and it provides critical tools for researchers, policymakers, and advocates seeking to better understand the needs of transgender people and to find ways to improve their lives.") Most questions have set options, but there's also an opportunity at the end to share personal stories in your own words.

There's also a Spanish language version and Spanish speakers, people of color, older people, immigrants, those who live in rural areas, and people who are HIV+ are especially encouraged to fill it out (because when people don't it's harder to advocate for services for those people, even when people providing the services know damn well there's a lot of need.)

trans friends— this has been circulating a lot on the internet already but PLEASE stop ordering from gc2b. their quality has massively declined, they send the wrong size binders correctly marked, the stitching is extremely poor and rips often times when first putting it on. do not waste your money on them!

if anyone wants to know why im fundraising for new binders its because due to the quality decrease in gc2b, im currently relying on one binder ive had since 2018. three of my other BRAND new gc2b binders have already ripped and two others were marked size large but were a size medium or below. on top of that, they hurt my back an ungodly fucking amount, so please be careful with them, i know how hard this shit is for anyone else who is poor and/or financially constrained, and i really empathize, please bind safely and be careful!

Gc2b is also unsafe due to the way the binders don't compress evenly. They will cause rib warping and permanent damage. Always go for even compression and it should never cut into your ribs while wearing it.

This isn't me being "fuck amazon" (though. fuck amazon), this is me saying I've been told by several sources that amazon binders are incredibly low-quality and incredibly unsafe.

It sucks that GC2B is bad now, but do not look to amazon as your new source. I know it's usually cheaper, but please. Don't hurt yourself.

(This goes double for amazon binders labeled as "for lesbians", "for butches", "for women", and "for cosplay", but like. I cannot stress enough that I have never heard a single person call any amazon binder "safe".)

Personally been using their binders since 2010. That long. I’ve only ever had one fall apart on me and it took 5 years of near constant wear and wash to do so, the other 2 I got in 2013 are still strong and fine, and I recently bought a new one that’s even higher quality than the old ones. Plus size, tall, and large chest friendly. I’m 6ft, 2xl, F cup. Their binders take me down to roughly a rounded b cup. They also have long binders that go over the waist/hips/butt to gently compress them if it causes you some dysphoria. Even post surgical vests!

No single item from Underworks in the binder category is over $45, with a 3 pack of binders being less than $100. Please don’t buy from random retailers on amazon or other shady websites when Underworks has been a well known, award winning binder brand for 20 years, and their binders are literally cheaper than gc2b.

i already rbed this but i wanna reblog w that addition too. used underworks from my first real binder until my top surgery. i had a gc2b one once (and this was years ago when gc2b had only been around for a couple years, so it was before this apparent quality drop) and it NEVER compared in comfort, breathability, practicality, or in the binding effect itself to my underworks binders. underworks has unfairly been considered an untrustworthy brand because their binders were originally meant for cis men with gynecomastia (breast growth), even though underworks has created a separate site (f2mbinders) specifically for their trans clientele which has measurements more accurate to pre/no hrt trans men, on top of the fact that its a fucking compressive shirt and the idea that it somehow wont work on you if you were afab is pretty bioessentialist. i fully endorse underworks and, as the above commenter, i especially recommend it for plus size folks and/or people with large chests, who gc2b binders imo were never inclusive of.

Co-signing as a fat enby with 44G breasts. Underworks binders may not come in a lot of colors (just black, white, and beige) but they are comfortable, breathable, wick sweat, and flatten like a boss. They also distribute well so you don't get back pain wearing them AND they don't give that weird breasts-bunched-under-the-arm thing some binders do to you if you're fat and/or have a lot of breast tissue to contend with. I cannot recommend them enough.

You can want to be more than one gender, at different times.

You can want to be both genders.

You can want to be rid of gendered body parts you already have.

You can want to keep gendered body parts while also being another gender.

You can want to be rid of them but not want the side effects of excising them.

You can feel dysphoria at being shaped like/viewed as/treated like a gender you don’t want.

You can feel euphoria at being shaped like/viewed as/treated like a gender you do want.

You can change your mind or adjust your goals or refine your wishes.

You can be stationary and fixed in your identity.

You can be fluid and changing.

You can be extremely gendered in your presentation.

You can be not very gendered in your presentation.

You can be androgynous.

You can be a little of both.

You can be a lot of both.

If gender is a line you can cross, as the words trans (across/on the other side of) and cis (here/on the same side of) indicate, you can cross it in any way you like, including dancing on top of it.

I'd never heard of Top Surgery Revision before. But this is super interesting!

Revisions are pretty common, actually! I wish more people knew that bc a lot of people do need them. As with any other surgery, it can be tough to know how you will heal, and revisions are not an indication that your top surgery was done badly or that you "failed" somehow. (But if your surgeon did fuck up, you can get revisions done by someone else.)

hey just so you know, if you're a detransitioner, i love and support you. if you thought you were trans but ended up being cis, i love and support you. if you were taking HRT but decided to stop for whatever reason, i'm here for you. if you're detransitioning for any reason, you are valid. being a detransitioner does not equal being transphobic, all it means is that you are detransitioning or detransitioned. that is it. you are not an enemy.
