Genderqueer Milwaukee is a free and open community group whose mission is to: -Bring people together to talk and think about gender in new ways -Increase visibility of gender variant people -Educate the larger Milwaukee community on issues of importance to people in the gender variant community Genderqueer Milwaukee meets on the first and third Wednesday of every month, locations will be stated in meeting notices. The format is part support group, part intellectual discussion, and entirely welcoming of all gender identities. Our discussions center the gender-variant community and we strive to create a space where gender-variant individuals can feel as safe as possible. Milo Yiannopoulos mocked a transgender student — and her response is perfect

On Tuesday, alt-right provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos brought his white nationalist schtick to the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. 

The talk was titled “Master Baiters: The Liberals Keeping America’s Race War Alive,” and Yiannopoulos diverted from discussions of race to mock and misgender transgender student Adelaide Kramer. 

Kramer was sitting in the crowd during the event, which was open to the public.

University chancellor Mark Mone sent an email to students after the appearance, in which he condemned Yiannopoulos’ words but upheld his right to say them. 

She responded to the chancellor’s statement with a long email, which opened “GO FUCK YOURSELF,” and copied around 400 other people on the email. Read more.

Genderqueer Milwaukee in coordination with other organizations is drafting a model policy to bring forward to the Fire & Police Commission to replace & inform the Milwaukee Police Department’s current Standard Operating Procedures which were passed October 10th this year. The MPD SOP document and the draft model policy will be available for review. Input on either of these policies is welcome and greatly appreciated as this policy progresses and can provided by e-mail at [email protected] or in person at the event. Sign the petition: Protect Our School Children's Right to Bathroom Privacy and Dignity STOP Bill LRB 2643/1

I just signed a petition to The Wisconsin State House and The Wisconsin State Senate: STOP Bill LRB 2643/1.The legislators introducing the bill say it's about safety, but it's actually about discrimination. It sets Wisconsin schools - and the state itself- at odds with recent guidance from the U.S. Department of Education around Title IX. Title IX has been clearly defined to prohibit discrimination against transgender students. In the nearly 60 Wisconsin school districts that follow best practices, no incidents have been reported of a non-transgender student being harassed. All this bill does is single out transgender and intersex students for increased scrutiny and harassment, directly jeopardizing their safety.

If you are eligible to vote in Wisconsin and are able to call, email, and/or write a physical letter to your state representative about this bill, that would also be great.

One way to combo this: You could call your rep and then send them a follow-up email thanking them for taking the time to speak with you and reiterating your position. Personally, I have a hard time interacting over the phone, so I save it for issues where I either don’t know my legislator’s position or when they are taking a position I disagree with.

When I do call, I find it’s helpful to have at least a basic script in front of me, so I know at least the gist of what I’m going to say and maybe have a few data points that I can reference.

I’m proud to say that my representative is publicly opposed to this one, so I was able to go with a simple email this time, stating my own opinion about this bill along with facts about how it’s damaging, thanking him for opposing it, and encouraging him to continue being vocal about it.

Tomorrow, (10/13/15) at 7:00 A.M., WPR on The Joy Cardin Show will be talking about the bathroom panic bill recently introduced into the Wisconsin legislature. Schools need to have policy that affirms and supports transgender students and staff. Many school policies have been changed to accommodate transgender students as a response to the tragic loss of life of transgender youth.  While often the protective policies put in place have little handling for harassment, education for staff, or include staff protections, this bill would undo the work that has been done to humanize transgender students and codify the segregation and hate of transgender people that is part of a continuing societal struggle. We encourage people to call in during the talk show hour to challenge the false assertions and scare tactics used by Wisconsin Family Action’s president, Julaine Appling, who will be on the show.
