While writing the lyrics for 342 days, a thought popped up for a scene/story in the au of an au. Now, I don't think it would fit the pacing of an animated film or series, but I can see it as its own side thing, like an animated short that takes place during the story's events but published seperately. (This is very spur of the moment writing! A mix of polished prose and just needing to convey an idea near the end, written on and off in six hours. Consider this a treat to tide over until part 2 of the Ancient City!)
Howard had stopped keeping track of the days ages ago.
It was difficult not to - given how little natural sunlight Howard got and his doubt that Morose would suddenly bestow a calendar to him out of the blue, all he could do was guess when counting sleeps stopped working.
It was still cold, though. This much, Howard did know. It was long after Christmas, and New Year's too. Probably... February, if Howard had to guess. Long enough that winter had begun to take its leave, but short enough that traces of it still lingered behind to leave small frosbitten kisses on his skin as he curled up on himself tighter for the last few sleeps.
This night had been no different.
Now, Howard would take what he could get: At the very least, today had been easier. Morose had been too preoccupied with whatever else to ask very much of him. It meant sleep would come easier too, despite the cold and the gnawing hunger in his gut.
He had taken to resting his head on crossed arms as of late. It worked well-enough as a pillow on the floor, while he twisted the rest of himself onto his side and curled his legs up to his chest. And on a day that was "okay," rather than "awful," it meant that exhaustion took over the second his eyes fell shut.
"Waking up" in that bar of his dreams was never unpleasant, so to speak. That said, it was disorientating. Moreso on the nights where his mind simply couldn't handle the events of the day and he found himself pleading to no one to please, please wake up there so that he could pretend he wasn't still on this accursed isle, just for a little while.
Usually, Howard found himself opening his eyes from an awkward splay on the bar's walkway (and once atop an active pool table, which baffled him enough that he had completely forgotten what he had begged for respite from).
This time, however, his eyes shot wide open as he found himself falling backwards, panicking as he gasped and grabbed at air for purchase-
Howard blinked himself into awareness at the voice and the strong grip on his shoulders. Two gold eyes (and one third in a sly wink), twinkled at him as his shoulders were held still. "You've just gotten here! At least wait to crack your skull open."
Knowhere had that mocking grin on his face as he always did, even when Howard shook off his hold.
"Welcome back! Took you long enough, I almost thought you wouldn't show!"
"Now sit still! Don't fall off this time. I can only do so much if you go over the side!"
And so Knowhere sauntered a few feet away, leaving Howard to look down where he was sat. It was an aged barstool, with thick leather stitches running across it. And where there was a barstool, there must be.... a bar, which Howard found to be right next to him. Knowhere had begun to walk behind it.
The barstool squeaked in protest as Howard wrenched it counter-clockwise to face the bar, probably against its way of turn.
Knowhere's smile hadn't left his face.
"Usually, I wake up here in... in times of strife. When the times get so bad that I need respite. So then what am I doing here now? I don't recall my mind breaking down."
"Now, Howard, surely you jest! Don't you know what day it is?"
Howard frowned a bit harder. "You don't have to gloat! Of course I don't! I haven't seen a calendar in months, not since-"
It was as though something had a fist had clamped around Howard's throat, stopping him before he could continue the sentence.
Gunths, thought Howard, in the absence of ability to say it aloud.
"Well, what's that frown for?" teased Knowhere. (Howard didn't feel his tail go over the bar to rub at his back.) "I'll let you know what day it is. All I ask is to do something for me!"
"Howard, this is better than crossing off the date on any calendar! Don't you want to know?"
With a huff and a puff of his chest, Howard crossed his arms and closed his eyes. No sooner than he had, he heard the clatter of something ceramic on wood, and opened them agai-
Howard's breath hitched at the sudden blindness. Knowhere's tail had wrapped itself loosely over his eyes, and Howard's fingers dug into the fluff.
"Our deal, Howard!" chuckled Knowhere once Howard had gone rigid.
He forced his eyes shut again, and his hands back down onto his lap as the clattering continued. It sounded like.... one plate. And silverware. And the scratch of matches, like when Phillip had run out and would ask Howard to spare a light for his cigarette.
".... There we are." Knowhere sounded.... soft, and when the fur had left his face, Howard opened his eyes to see-
A chocolate cake, covered entirely in frosting that dribbled even past the plate and onto the bar. Stuck on top where two lit candles, although they looked less like candles and more blobs of wax with wicks sticking out. Each was the vague approximation of a number, as though the sculptor had only seen said numbers a singular time in their life and had worked from the memory. One candle was a "2," and the other.... well, Howard couldn't make it out. What he could read, however, clear as day, in perfect cursive, was the white icing directly beneath them.
"Happy birthday, Howard!"
Knowhere grinned at his shock.
"Congrats on aging, Howard! Here's to the next."
Howard looked at Knowhere, and then the cake. Then, again, Knowhere.
He wanted to ask, how? How was his mind so sure that it was March 3rd? How come it kept conjuring up this place in particular? How, how, how-
How could it be so cruel as to remind him that he would never have a proper birthday again?
Wet tears blotted the icing as Howard hiccuped out a graceless sob.
"How could- how could you- you awful cat, why?" he choked out.
"Howard! If I knew you preferred vanilla, I would've gotten you that instead!" Knowhere cackled, but still quickly pulled back the plate before Howard could drown the cake in saltwater.
"No, no- Chocolate's my favorite!" he gasped out as though the accusation burned and not as though his world was being shattered around him once more. "But you- you know this! I know this! I know that none of this is real!" he cried out, unable to find the rhyme.
His vision blurred, and he keeled forward to bury his face in his hands with more strangled cries that bled through his fingers and spilled all over the bar.
It was too much. It was too unfair. He almost wanted to blame his woe on that stupid rock, if not for the fact Morose hadn't subjected him to it that night.
Knowhere's tail had brushed against his hand, and his voice was steady, none of that usual mocking tone present.
"Well, isn't that a dilemma! What if it was, Howard? What would you do, then?"
Howard peered between his fingers. Knowhere had his elbows set on the bar with his head set on clasped hands. His smirk had shrank.
".... I wouldn't be able to do anything, no doubt. I would still be in the manor until I could find a way out."
"Then why not pretend for a while if this isn't real, like you insist? Make up for it in your sleep, where he can't reach."
..... Howard breathed deep and sat back. He wiped away his tears, tucked away his fears.
"Alright. I'll- I'll pretend. For a while, before this dream's end."
Knowhere clapped his hands together and cackled with a hiss. "There! That's the spirit!" Knowhere pushed the cake forward again, and Howard felt his stomach growl. Hunger invaded dreams, it seemed.
"You need to be in top mental shape before you get back into the fray, Howard, and a birthday is perfect for that." Knowhere tapped at Howard's forehead, and Howard had the foresight to grip the bartop before he leaned back. "So I've tried to make the most out of this night. For example-" He clicked his tongue towards the piano player across the walkway, and Howard smoothly swiveled the barstool to look. "- I cashed in a few of my pool wins. That music sound familiar, Howard?"
Howard sniffled, but strained his ears nonetheless. He was never very musically-inclined - that had been his mother's forte, with a lullaby she would sing to him at the end of every day - but he caught onto enough of the melody that he could tie words to it.
"That- that's The Beatles."
True, it was. Howard filled in the gaps. He strung Starr's vocals to the end of one song, and McCartney's to the start of the next.
From Rubber Soul. Phillip and him had listened to the album the whole way through for the first time after another night of writing applications. On a soft rug in Phillip's apartment that he had placed to hide an ink stain in the floorboards.
Phillip had hated it. Howard had it up there as the greatest album he had ever heard.
"Good ear! You know, there's a new album! From last August. Revolver, it's called."
The barstool swiveled clockwise again, and Howard raised an eyebrow. "Well, that's wishful thinking. Of anything back on the mainland, I haven't got an inkling."
"If you really want to talk about wishful thinking-" Ceramic scraped over wood. Knowhere had pushed the cake a little bit closer to Howard. "-then maybe you should make one."
Blue flames had melted recesses further down into the candles. They hadn't yet dripped onto the cake, though. Or the icing, which now read,
courtesy of Howard's earlier tears.
He couldn't help but snort before he closed his eyes-
Imagined himself back on the mainland, sharing cake with Phillip-
"I want to listen to that new album with Phillip."
Howard blew out the candles.
The cake was, as expected, divine.
Knowhere had helped himself too, of course. The baker's fee, he said.
And then, once Howard was rubbing crumbs off his face with the back of his hand, Knowhere had led him to the pool tables.
Where they had originally stood was a bed- a king-sized one! With sheets so soft and a blanket so warm that Howard had to rub his face against it before ushering himself into the bed.
Knowhere had left him to it with one final, "happy birthday," and Howard buried his face in a down-feather pillow. He gave one last look to the void about the bar: They twinkled with stars.
And so Howard finally closed his eyes, lulled to sleep by soft piano and the stars' watchful gaze.
A sliver of sunlight spilling across his eyes made Howard groan.
It wasn't that much light- just a small stream from a hole in the wall, only a few bricks wide that was too high to reach and too small to crawl out of - but still enough that Howard forced his eyes to stay shut and threw an arm over his eyes.
What a warm welcome back into the real world from... huh. He remembered bits and pieces of the dream. Of good music, and soft blankets. Of warmth settling in his stomach. Howard's elbows gave him the leverage to sit up on the floor.
His back didn't ache as terribly as it normally did, and the gnawing in his stomach had subsided.
.... How odd. Well, he knew better than to complain.
(The phantom taste of chocolate cake lingered on his tongue.)
Howard found that bracing himself for the day ahead came easier that morning.
AWWWWWWWWW this is so cute this is such a cute and as always peak scenario from you as always I love it :D I love the way it's all structured and the pacing and just how nice it all is. Just a simple, yet unconventional birthday celebration.
I love how Knowhere just goes into 'must spoil this yeah he's not a kid but to someone like me he kind of is one' uncle mode with Howard, even if it's just for one day, Howard just deserves nice things after everything he's been through on the island and what better way to give him those nice things than with a birthday celebration? And Howard just, even if it's in his mind (not really but you know), having one night to just eat chocolate cake (which is absolutely delicious and my personal preference for cake lol), listen to good music and sleep in a proper and almost luxurious bed for the first time in months is so wholesome and deserving :) and also his wish being to listen to the new Beatles' album with Phillip, just awwwwwww it's very cute and also I get the feeling that Phillip, even if he ends up hating the album or has to listen to the other album he hated, would choose to listen to it with Howard just to make him happy in all the aus, not just this one :)
But also that one line 'how could it be so cruel as to remind him that he would never have a proper birthday celebration again?' omg the implications of this one line alone is heartbreaking. Is Howard thinking that all of his future birthdays would be tainted from his experiences on the island, or is he, deep down, thinking he may never be free from the island and that he'll never get to have a birthday celebration like the ones back home again? Either way or any other third option I didn't think of that is heartwrenching.
The idea that Howard could've missed his own birthday (and by extention, Phillip missing his birthday) is absolutely heartwrenching and while that does not happen here, I can definitely see it happening in the og roleswap au (for an extra gut punch maybe Morose is the one to point it out in the og roleswap au, as another way for him to taunt Howard. Pretty sure he has employees' birthdays written down somewhere so it would make sense. Could also turn out to be one of the worst days for him to contrast the good one he has in the au of the au, to highlight just how much Knowhere's presence helped Howard in the au of the au)
Anyways once again I have to reiterate that this is peak and wholesome and I love it :D good luck on the second part to the ancient city in the meantime :)
