TL;DR, Tolkien was an extraordinarily humane writer who rejected many dominant racial ideologies of his era. However, his legendarium did inherit and reproduce the racial imagination of early 20th century Europe. These two facts are not contradictory, and it actually does matter what Tolkien publicly believed, even if his works don’t perfectly embody those beliefs.

Saying "Tolkien was unusually decent on race for an English academic born in 1892" is not the same thing as saying "Tolkien was morally flawless." Few serious Tolkien scholars would argue that Tolkien's work is free of racialized assumptions. It is worth talking about how to interpret those assumptions, how central they are to the legendarium, and how modern adaptions should engage with them.
Second, historical context does matter. It doesn't excuse everything, but it's how useful comparisons are made. To decide whether Tolkien was progressive, we need to compare him to other Oxford philologists and European writers of the early-to-mid 20th century.
On that comparison, there is good evidence he was ahead of his time: consider his outright rejection of the Nazi racial ideology in the 1938 letter, his condemnation of apartheid, his mistrust of imperial arrogance, and the recurring theme throughout his work that mercy and humility are preferable to power.
None of those erase the racialized geography of Middle-Earth or the descriptions of Southrons/Haradrim/Orcs but they do tell us something about what Tolkien personally believed, even if his fiction sometimes reproduced assumptions that don't sit easily with those beliefs. His documented opposition to Nazism and apartheid is not trivial. They are evidence that Tolkien's moral outlook on race was more expansive than many of his contemporaries, even if he did remain bounded by assumptions he himself never recognized.
We routinely evaluate historical works relative to their own moment while still recognizing their limitations.
Pride and Prejudice is by modern standards still a deeply gendered novel, but its insistence that women possess intellectual and moral agency pushed feminist thought forward. Maurice is centered on white upper-middle-class English men, but in 1913 simply writing a novel where two men fall in love, have sex and find happiness was radical. Huckleberry Finn was one of the strongest anti-slavery novels in American literature, while still reflecting assumptions and language of 19th century America.
The Lord of the Rings makes the renunciation of power rather than its acquisition the moral center of an epic fantasy. The commoners who reject glory are depicted as the real heroes. To an extent, it also undermines a simplistic view of racial superiority.
Consider Sam wondering about a dead Southron soldier:
He wondered what the man's name was and where he came from; and if he was really evil at heart, or what lies or threats had led him on the long march from his home; and if he would not really rather have stayed there in pace...
Sam doesn't just pity the Southron. He wonders about what he wanted, and who was waiting for him at home. It's an unusually empathetic for a wartime epic written in the 1940s.
The fact that in 2026 we can identify limitations in Tolkien's work is itself evidence that moral progress has occurred. Saying "he was progressive for 1950 but not 2026" isn't some special excuse; it's literally how history works.

Fucking hell, a whole week (pretty much) of sleeping on a sofa and putting my joints out. Being forced to write from the kitchen in full view of my entire household and everything being so unbelievably loud the whole time.
And the windows are FINALLY FINISHED.

*This is a fictional depiction of how dwarrow mental health may manifest. There will be allusions to disturbing content below the cut. Reader discretion is advised. Mental health conditions are uncomfortable and debilitating, as a result things may provoke feelings of discomfort when reading. However it is important to explore mental health in fantasy settings because it allows us to relate and see more of ourselves in these worlds.
Though this is a fictional condition I have done my best to ensure proper respect and bring a level of casual clinical notation in order to provide concise context.
Are these uncomfortable to read? Yes but they are all rooted in text book case studies and reality of mental health experiences.
Summary
Hyperactive - insert dwarven brain structure for survival- resulting in immediate freeze/ exaggerated startle response state at slightest sign of danger. Can include outbursts of violent behavior in Mixed subtypes type.
Theories include the possibility that prolonged stress within the womb can induce the condition.
Types
Flight:
Flight involves Uncontrollable fleeing from perceived threatening stimuli. This impulsive escape only resolves when the Dwarf has found a hiding space. Self regulation of the system occurs dependent on the individual but it has been reported some individuals stay in Flight mode for days.
Freeze:
Freeze involves the Dwarf freezing upon any perceived threatening stimuli. They are unable to move or communication until the stimuli is extinguished or removed. Afterwards the individual slowly unfreezes in a ‘thawing process’ as other stimuli are finally given processing priority again. A dwarf in this state is completely locked in and unaware of anything other than the offending stimuli.
Mixed subtype:
Mixed subtype involves one or both type(s) combined with violent outbursts when exposed to perceived threatening stimuli. For lack of scientific terms: this subtype means the individual can go absolutely feral.
Onset
Onset at birth most noted in infant stages due to hyperarousal in response to stimuli. Sub types are easily distinguishable due to infant freezing when startled or surprised OR scream crying until falling asleep. Mixed subtype manifests as the dwarfling ages. Most prominently noticed through biting,pulling beards/hair, and squeezing adult fingers harshly.
Barriers to treatment
Shame shame shame!
Theories present indicate possible connection between generational traumas and Exaggerated flight/freeze. This induces a sense of guilt and responsibility within the family system and a tendency to self treat at home to hide the condition from others.
Violence
Violence in mixed subtype presents treatment difficulties as individuals may hit, bite, kick healers providing treatment.
Elopement
Flight may result in the Dwarf eloping and becoming lost deep within the mountain. This is especially a concern with dwarflings and striplings due to unfamiliarity with infrastructure and predatory things lying in the darkest depths.

Avoidance of open spaces/tall ceilings/leaving the mountain. When doing so they experience high levels of anxiety.
Tendency towards isolation both out of desire to reduce symptoms and because of cultural shame.

Treatment
Tighter fitting garments, skin contact with parent, and snuggle sacks help ease anxiety in the youngest of dwarflings.
Dwarflings have a particularly hard time as they experience intense separation anxiety (many find comfort in transitional objects made of parents clothing and weighted beads. Usually in a favorite shape!)
Transitional friends at school or going out in public has been shown to be beneficial to the dwarrows' safety,aid in skill building, reducing anxiety, and build independent responses.
Compression or weighted garments for anxiety reduction and chainmail style weighted blankets to reduce night time anxiety. May sleep with siblings,parents, or friends as a way to ease anxiety.
Compression garments to reduce anxiety may be lifelong.
Multiple therapy modalities exist including gradual and consistent exposure to stimuli in conjunction with increasing anxiety tolerance and introducing strategies and techniques to manage distress and increase control over reponses.
Some herbal remedies in testing phases and others for anxiety reduction. May lead to self medicating with substances.
Case studies
Dwarfling mixed subtype
Dwarfling with mixed subtype presented with freezing behavior at sudden movements and sounds. Family noticed at 3 months old that the dwarfling freezes for hours on end without unnecessary movement(breathing and reduced blinking) including high heart rate and slowed breathing. As they grew they began showing inability to be left alone without crying and fussing. Requiring skin to skin contact with a family member to self soothe and regulate. Toddler Stage introduced far more concerning behavior and they displayed accelerated development in movement and coordination. They began walking two months early than average development. Dwarfling has begun showing reactive aggression behaviors when a perceived threatening stimuli is introduced.
Beginning school has been difficult but with the assignment of a peer aid and compression garments the dwarfling is slowly becoming comfortable and their personality is emerging.
Freeze subtype: stripling
Stripling has displayed symptoms since birth. Most notably to hand motions and sudden changes in the environment. They adapted well with weighted garments and began therapeutic intervention early with positive parental involvement. Their time in freeze has reduced from multiple hours to half an hour due to hard work and consistent peer support at school. However they are still unable to fully participate in events, group activities without peer support, and remain nonverbal unless peer support is present. They are easily sent into a panicked state and experience intense shame in the aftermath. Interventions are taking place to ensure they reduce time isolating and build supportive social connections. Stripling carries comfort objects and finds wearing weighted clothing aids them in emotional regulation.
Flight subtype: adult
Parents noticed symptoms of anxiety upon separation and increased crying. Though they engaged in little intervention and aid activities due to shame. They began self medicating their child's condition with numerous substances which led to them living in an intoxicated state. As a stripling they spontaneously eloped and were lost within the mines for several days until they were found. Treatment was finally obtained but ultimately denied as they are an adult and do not deem it necessary. They work from their home making jewelry and continue self medicating.
