I deadass think steve rogers ending was character assassination and conservative rhetoric (send the progressive man back to the decade epitomes with traditional values for a white picket fence life) but it was also just cruel to steve and bucky. “oh ur just mad ur ship didn’t go canon” no im mad the friendship that was the most important thing in both of their lives was tossed aside and the audience was gaslit into believing it didn’t matter despite three films proving otherwise. steve dropped the shield twice for bucky and would have died rather than live in a world where bucky didn’t remember him. bucky broke thru 70 years of brainwashing at the sound of steve’s voice. their catchphrase was essentially “til death do we part”. the fuck

stucky au where actually nobody ever gave steve the talk on modern vocab politics, so he's using every gay slur in the books. & the immediate response to this is JESUS CHRIST DUDE YOU CAN'T BE SAYING THAT SHIT...which steve takes not as a "do not call that obviously gay man a fairy", but instead, "it's still considered very rude to talk about anything Gay."

this ends in a real car crash of an avengers press conference once bucky is back, were steve is getting interrogated on why he never told the public he was dating bucky/the winter soldier until footage got out.

& steve, completely sincere, goes "the other avengers insisted it was inappropriate and wrong. They said it could be a bad influence on children if i spoke about it publicly. in an effort to maintain our working relationships, i complied with keeping that aspect of my life private."

Steve, the troll, plenty aware of the meaning of "body count" in the 21st century (though more than a little concerned about it) keeps feeding into it

Bucky, the person Steve shared his first kiss with at 16 and then more over the years, thinks it's hilarious

something self-indulgent i like to think about, is Steve entering his "I love my husband" era and fully and gleefully embracing his downbadism. like one day it finally sinks in that he doesn't have to act Chill about Bucky anymore (like he's ever acted Chill about Bucky in the first place), and he never. looks. back. he's in love with this man and he's done trying to rein in his feelings to protect everybody else's sensibilities. he'll race into Bucky's open arms and literally sweep him up off his feet and spin them around romcom style, and he'll kiss the breath out of him for good measure, in front of their friends, in front of strangers, of their royal allies - even, on occasion, in front of their foes, if the whim strikes. let them all witness how chronically Down Bad Steve is for his husband, they been knew all along anyway. he's traveling for whatever reason? well then he's gotta buy a little trinket to bring home to Bucky as a souvenir, and you can bet dollars to donuts he's gonna end up waxing poetic about all the shades of Bucky's eyes to the lucky vendor for the next 20 minutes. he knows how to say "gift" and "for my husband" in 27 languages, just in case. Bucky's lost count of all the times Steve's introduced him to someone - three adorable old ladies at the park, the cashier at the deli around the corner, the young bookstore clerk with a rainbow pin on his shirt, people met at the local farmers' market - only for the delighted stranger to say, "Is this your Bucky?", immediately followed by, "Steve's told me so much about you!". one thing Bucky's garnered from this experience, is the knowledge that even when he's out of Steve's sight, he's never really out of Steve's mind; and apparently, everybody in the five boroughs has been informed of that too. (apparently, everybody in the five boroughs knows him as Steve's Bucky; Bucky can't say that he minds that very badly. no, he can't say that at all.)

Just imagine Bucky wandering through his own mind for decades, as if trapped in a dreamlike world, a prison. It isn’t until he sees Steve again for the first time that he finally starts to notice a light at the end of that long tunnel. A spark of hope.
