From Here to Eternity (1953) dir. Fred Zinnemann
ofviolentsdelights:
andres knew it sounded wild that the best veggie burger in town was a random bar on the outskirts of beverly hills, but it was true. out of all the places he had ever been the best place to go was on a random street corner in los angeles. a friend of a friend once told him it’d change his life and he immediately called bullshit— until one day he remembered the sentiment and now this was the only place he’d go when he wanted a fix of greasy faux meat between a sesame seed bun.
peeling off his sunglasses, he read the text sprawled across his phone screen, not watching where he was going as he entered the dimly light establishment. he wasn’t being a bit of a hypocrite. plenty of time she had chastised others for being too involved with their phones and he was doing the exact same thing. it wasn’t until his body collided with another and he hissed out a curse. “fuck. it’s fine. i wasn’t looking i was looking at this stupid thing,” he waved his iphone in the air. andres squinted down at the other. “hey gen,” the filmmaker laughed. “midday treat?” bending down, he helps her collect her belongings. “how’ve you been? i haven’t seen you in… well, forever.” ever since her divorce from baz there sightings had been sparse.
the brunette quickly recognized the familiar voice of an old friend. she gave him a smile as she reached for the papers as helped. she swiftly stuffed them back into her bag before getting back up on her feet. “mmhmm-- i think i’ve been a little too generous to myself today,” she laughed as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. andres was always so kind to her and never once acted out on her after the divorce, which was nice considering he was such a close friend to baz. most of their friendship revolved around him. although, she did miss what they all once had. seeing him brought her joy and reminded her of the good times she had.
“i know, it’s been a while,” she started, “i’ve been really good. i just recently came back from peru. the beaches there are breathtaking.” it was something she did for herself. it was a short trip she took with her sisters. gen has always been such a workaholic, she never stayed more than four days on a trip because she couldn’t handle not being at the office. “anyways, enough about me-- i’ve missed you, mon chéri, tell me about the genius works you’ve made,” the brunette giggled.
ncrmalpeople:
“aw, fuck, i’m sorry–” baz’s voice is cut off once he processes the cadence and sound of the other’s voice. of course, he’d know that voice anywhere. baz doesn’t know how he hadn’t seen her before. he’d been lingering far too long at the bar, that he knew. grabbed lunch with a friend, enjoyed a little alone time, worked on a new set. so, sure, maybe it wasn’t all a waste. but he certainly wasn’t anticipating running into his ex wife. “hey, gen.” his words come easily, smooth, and he’s surprised that there’s not a shake to them. he’s quickly helping with her things and handing them off to her, with a small and almost nervous smile. “hey, c’mon, no wine is no fun.”
as soon as she heard the familiar deep and raspy voice of her ex-husband, it was as if her heart dropped all the way down to her stomach. the divorce was still fresh even though it had been years since it happened. but the seeing-each-other-afterwards part of it was something she always avoided. which was something that gen wanted, since it would be too painful if they just pretended like if everything was fine. because everything was not fine. she could still remember the turbulence that followed those long months of legal jargon and the media following her around. it even hurt her business, which made it hard to buy herself a mansion in the hills. if she ever downgraded it would have been so embarrassing. only because she had to remain a strong woman, for her public image. the brunette slowly reached out for the stack of papers as he handed them to her. it took her back to when they were signing legal papers. but she quickly pushed that image out of her head. “merci,” she mumbled as she stuffed the papers into her tote, coming up to her feet. geneviève kept her hands close to her thighs in hopes that she looked alright.
what was there to say? nothing, she shouldn’t say anything. “you look great,” the words came out genuinely but she instantly regretted them, so she quickly followed up with, “um-- so, how’ve you been?” was it the wine talking? she usually wouldn’t have let her guard down so easily. but then again, it was baz. they were married for years and at some point she called him a best friend. the brunette bit her bottom lip, which was something she did when she was a bit nervous. gen glanced down at her watch and then back at those familiar eyes. “y’know, i didn’t know you came here...if i did-- i wouldn’t have,” she paused before giving him a small smile, “i’ve probably stayed too long here anyways.”
spicehq:
“oh pfft! nah, you’re all good, hun,” simone said with a wave of her hand and a lax roll of her eyes, “happens to the best of us. especially when we’re wine drunk at two in the afternoon. been there, done that.” while she was joking for reassurance’s sake, simone had definitely had her fair share of afternoon solo parties. particularly when she was younger. “here - lemme help you.” she bent down alongside the other woman, reaching for any stray papers. “are you from france? i just got in from london, myself.” with a scrunch of her nose, simone admitted in defeat, “no cool accent though. i’m originally from here.”
the warm presence of another woman who was reassuring, was beyond pleasant. in most cases others wouldn’t be too happy after an incident like this. a smile quickly came across geneviève’s face before she let out a laugh, “i’m glad i’m not the only one.” the brunette couldn’t help but keep her smile as she picked up the rest of the paper work, relieved that another would help her, “merci, you’re so kind.” most californian’s had thick skin and usually they weren’t as nice as she was, which was refreshing for gen.
“i am, i’m from colmar, alsace. it’s a very small town in eastern france. i would say the biggest city near by would be...,” her blue eyes shifted to the right as she tried to remember, “zürich.” gen smiled, it always brought her joy talking about her hometown. it was nothing like los angeles, in fact, la is considered way more progressive than colmar. but she loved it nonetheless. “oh--wow! really? how long were you there for? i’ve heard that london is so beautiful,” she exclaimed, shoving the papers back into her tote and getting back on her feet. “i’d love to visit-- i’ve only ever landed in london for crossovers, but i really should treat myself for a visit.”
it was a quarter till two and gen was still at the local bar, which only caused a wash of guilt to come over her. even if she was the boss at her practice, it was still no excuse to take a two hour lunch. she swirled the wine glass in her grasp, watching as the bubbly liquid traveled around the interior-- never reaching the top. as the bartender took her tab she decided it was probably time to finally return to the office. with a sigh, she hoped no one realized how long she was gone for. it was just unethical and she always tried to be fair to her employees but for some reason she just felt the need to be alone for a while. she would never admit it, but it was probably due to the loss of a family she once had. it was never the same since she moved out on her own. a big mansion in beverly hills wasn’t as romantic without someone to share it with.
geneviève took one more sip before grabbing her things, turning around at the exact moment as another. “oh mon dieu!” she gasped under her breath as her tote plunged to the floor, spilling all of its contents of paper work onto the floor. “goodness, i’m so sorry,” gen stated as she carefully bent down to pick up the wreckage. even though shes lived in america for years, her accent still clinged to her. and she was rather proud of it, since it's the one thing she still has from her home. “no more wine for me, then,” she added with a laugh as she looked up to the figure.
