Cyril's Gringoire is gorgeous :3
The makers of the disney film considered their Phoebus to be a combination of the Phoebus of the novel and the character Pierre Gringoire
They could have just left him out entirely and used me instead. They could have made me the narrator, too. I can tell a story better than Clopin can. In fact, just take everyone else out except me. Call it The Gringoire of Notre Dame.
Messy unfinished Gringoire doodle. :3 (I’ve been thinking about starting a HoND comic)

Here is a cringey drawing I drew last year of Pierre Gringoire! :D

im broke? no you misheard me! i’m baroque! i’m extravagant
broke financially but baroque emotionally
I still can’t fully proceed the thought that even if I ever get to visit Notre-Dame it will never ever be the building that witnessed more than eight centuries of history
Don’t worry, friend. The roof and the spire took most of the damage, but the main part, the stone structure, is still in place, and almost all of the stained glass is still there (including the three big rose windows). As far as I’ve seen, the only stained glass that fell out was the smaller rose window above the big southern one. The bells and the towers are safe, and even simple interior things like the wicker chairs for the congregation and the candle holders around the arcade were mostly untouched. Sources have said 90 - 95% of the interior art was saved as well.
On the outside the chimeras and gargoyles are still there, though “si je m’souviens de mon histoire”, at least some of those were redone in the 1800s around the same time the spire was rebuilt (the original one had collapsed in the 1700s). Other areas of the church, including parts of the exterior roof had also been redone after the initial construction as well.
So while parts of the roof were original to the 1100s/1200s and are now gone, and the spire had 200 years of history on it which was still a loss, most of original, oldest history is still there.
I think Claude Gauvard, a specialist of medieval architecture, put it best. She said that while watching the images of the fire were painful, and she felt like she was losing a dear member of her family, she felt much better when she the images from the next day because she could see that Notre-Dame “is still herself.”
Notre-Dame is still herself. Some parts of her have had to be be repaired and replaced throughout the ages, and it’s just that the roof is now joining that list. The majority of the church, the most iconic and oldest parts, are still standing, and will be waiting to welcome you when you come see them.

notre dame is burning.
this is ok.
it has happened before. it will happen again. it has been lost before. it will be lost again. and again. and again. and again. art and architecture are transient, and temporary, and 850 years may seem like a lot to the individual, who will live maybe 100 if they are very lucky and very healthy, but even the pyramids at saqqara have only existed for about 6000 years and that’s still not all that much, if you consider the grand scheme of things.
yes, this is terrible. as someone who is deeply religious and literally a professional historian with a focus on art and architecture, this is terrible. im mourning. im gutted. im horrified and upset and miserable. but.
it’s not over.
victor hugo wrote hunchback because notre dame du paris was in the process of collapsing and falling apart, and revitalized the entire world’s focus and love for this church, and that was not even 200 years ago. it led to it being renovated.
the roof has fallen in. the scars of fires are on its buttresses. the rose window has fallen out. the beams and piers have collapsed. the spire has toppled. the stones have suffered, and will suffer again, but it is not gone.
renovation work is essential. sometimes things collapse and burn and break and have to come back. it’s not a terrorist attack, it’s renovation, an accident, but we have so much evidence, history, carefully documented everything on one of the most studied places in the world.
it’s not the end.
Hey so, French person here. And also an ex History student. I’m here to say: Please listen to o.p. above.
Obviously everyone is shocked but here’s a few important key facts:
The roof is completely gone. Part of it dated back from the 13th century but the rest was from the 19th. The stone arch roof under the top roof is fine.
One of the three main stained glass rose windows has fallen out. Most of the other stained glass windows are okay.
The spire has fallen down and that’s the saddest part. BUT! It was in the process of being restored and the 16 statues that were there were removed just four days ago! So they’re fine.
The main structure is still here and nothing has “burned down” unlike what some people have been saying.
The “treasure” (sacred objects) is safe.
Notre Dame is still there. It’s just damaged. Almost nothing was lost today, and nobody was wounded either. It’s scary, but it’s gonna be okay.
There is a restoration fund you can donate to.

The Notre Dame cathedral is on fire
I think it’d be a good idea to let people from the Middle Ages use tumblr
Pierre Gringoire
“Oh… ‘tis no fault of mine, but of the watch and the king. I have just had a narrow escape. I always just miss being hung. 'Tis my predestination."
"You miss everything. But come quickly. Have you the password?"
"Only fancy, master. I have seen the king. I have just come from him. He wears fustian breeches. 'Tis a real adventure."
Still bitter at Disney for leaving out Gringoire, AND the stage version for briefly adding Jehan back in (even though they completely ruined his story), but not even giving the tiniest NOD to poor Pierre!
They’re just afraid that if they put me next to their “hero” Phoebus, I will outshine him in every way. That’s why they never put me in their adaptations.
