**spoiler alert**
SOZIN IS ASS. A RACIST, LYING, NARCISSISTIC PIECE OF TRASH ID LIKE TO TACKLE AND TOSS INTO THE PIT MALAYA WAS BURNT AND CRUSHED IN.
The prophetic dream of Gyatso fighting in the destroyed Southern Air Temple actually wrecked me. Gyatso was my favorite character of the book; his playfulness resembles Aang’s and his wisdom is so great. They’re literally so similar.
I like that Gyatso is really powerful but also has a similar drawback to his potential that Aang dealt with. Aang had to let go of his detachment to Katara, but he refused to just forget her.Instead, he seemed to find peace with himself in taking her love with him, through his fear, to perform his duties of the avatar. Gyatso seems to go through a similar process with Yama in that he realizes that he can take his love for her with him to the present, rather than dwell on that grief and feel like a part of him has to be missing.
That much is noted in the end when rather than Gyatso thinking of Malaya’s death, he thinks of her life. It’s a type of detachment that isn’t the “forget about her” detachment, but the kind of “appreciate what you had” and take that with you kind of detachment.
It’s a detachment from the physical pain to attach to the spiritual connection.
Malaya’s death actually killed me though. Why did ROKU have to think that Malaya’s death was his fault. Why does Sozin GET OFF SO FUCKING EASY???
That said, i kind of struggle with the idea of life being invaluable meaning that there is no time and place to end it, yah know? I guess i have to look into those principles of buddhism a bit more.
Anyways thanks for reading my rant ^^
At what age do you think Tenzin got his tattoos? 😁
Oh excellent question!! I imagine he got them much later than he intended considering how much he compares himself to Aang. Both he and Katara mastered their respective elements early on in life, so I imagine he not only wanted to do the same, but felt pressure to do so as well. All of that pressure likely made it much harder for him to master it considering air is about freedom and weightlessness. Aang died when he was 66, so I like to imagine he got his arrows at 29 years old. I also think that he got them by learning the full 36 teirs, and only perfected his own technique (the air wheel) after Aang had already died. But he totally started crafting it around the time he was 16.
Tenzin, age 17
okay I think I'm gonna add Lin to this as well. I'm really liking the concept of them secretely running around early Republic City, liberating homeless encampments from Daofei influence and what not
I don't know where to start! Give us 3 Tenzin headcanons? :)
Okay I couldn't help myself, I did 5 🤧
1. Tenzin is an Aquarius Rising, Scorpio sun, Capricorn moon. Lin is a Virgo.
2. As a child he pushed away his best friend, Lin, to pursue his greater responsibilities. They reunited as teens to confront the Daofei presence in Republic City, as well as aiding and supporting the homeless population together, as a team.
3. He secretely likes meat and had his siblings sneak him some as a kid.
4. His idea of fun was imitating his father's techniques as accurately as possible. As he grew older he began creating his own style. His techniques were focused on precision and power instead of his father's style that focused on playfulness and evading.
5. He's a ginormous history buff. He took pleasure in researching the histories of the four nations. Katara wanted him to focus on Air Nomad history, and Aang reluctantly had him focus on it as well. For his 14th birthday Fire Lord Zuko gave him an incredibly valuable and coveted book from his private collection on fire nation history. He told him that much wisdom can be taken from learning about the strengths, weaknesses, and traits of each nation, people, and elements. Because of this book he began to idolize Avatar Szeto's loyalty and prioritization on bringing back strength and stability to the Fire Nation. He carried this philosophy into his own relationship to the revival of Air culture.

Tenzin, age 16
Strict, ambitious, and devoted. Hot take: Where Aang strongly embodies the spiritual and conservative aspects of air nomad culture, Tenzin embodies the progressive and disciplinary aspects. Aang holds true to the values and practices he grew up on and still remains playful. Tenzin has always seemed more open to improving and adding to the legacy of the near extinct culture because of his genuine love for it. I like to imagine Tenzin excitedly embraced anyone even moderately interested in Air Nomad culture. (HC: Pema was a cultural anthropologist interested in Air Nomad society.)
[PLEASE ask me about my Tenzin headcanons I have so many 🙏🏾]
Day 1 of me attempting to convince myself Kataang works 🫠
I've been a Zutara shipper for ages, but I'm giving Kataang another shot. Why? I realized that one thing I didn't see enough of was Aang and Katara nerding out together about bending. Sure, Katara and Zuko look good together and had tension, but who can she talk at length (and I mean hours) about bending with? I always imagined that pre-Aang she spent what little free time she had daydreaming about the legendary benders of the world, not just water. Bending is her main delight and fascination. I imagine her begging her granny to tell her stories about waterbenders of old. Then Aang comes along, a naturally talented bender of an extinct style AND the Avatar. A boy who not only has the means to show her the current vast world of benders, but also share stories of personal encounters he had with the legendary benders from a century ago. And he thinks she's 🌸pretty🌸. Lowkey a match made in heaven.
