Friends! My beloved Owen and I celebrated 7 years the other day and we are celebrating by doing a month long drawing challenge with each other. I was doing character art prompts with one of my students today - this design was using the prompt ‘goblin raider’ crossed with ‘affluent woman in Victorian dress’. I really dug the sketchy character I did in the session so I tried my hand at drawing the character again as well as practicing with some new copics. Today is Autism Awareness Day. For me this is not just awareness of autism and people who are on the spectrum but also all the parents, siblings, families and support workers that assist everyday. My brother was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 2 (I was 4) and he and Autism have been a huge parts of my life since then. Autism, like most things to do with humans or brains is weird, hard to understand, tiring, both frustrating & rewarding as well as strangely sticky (see comic: Vegemite Parrot). Since I started working on my graphic novel about growing up with my brother (3 years ago now) I realised two things pretty quickly: 1) long form comics are hard and take forever to make and 2) growing up with Rob was also hard. And felt a lot harder looking back at it than it did at the time. I started writing my book because growing up barely anyone my age knew what Autism was or looked like. This has changed, there is more out for young people with ASD, more services and awareness, which is amazing. But there is still a lack of stories and support networks for siblings. I want to write this book to add my little bit of awareness into the world, so other siblings know they are not alone. It’s hard and you cry and you do what you can and you love and you cry some more. But please remember, you are not alone. 💖 I love my brother and my parents very much, they have all shaped and made me who I am today. I always forget how much I love colouring with copic until I sit down and do it. I also drew this straight with ink. I wanted to challenge myself and draw without pencilling which is how those wonky fingers happened.
