re: the myth that the nazi regime was efficient… is it efficient to wage an extremely aggressive war of conquest on multiple fronts while also essentially going to war with a portion of your own population? not remotely. we’re talking about a government that was in power for 12 years, not at all comparable to a successful state.
i’ve just heard a surprising number of people say “well the nazis were evil, but they were efficient!” no, evil and inefficient.
like yeah patterns of force is more anti-nazi and anti-fascism than it isn’t (even if it objectively doesn’t really understand either concept – ie blaming the movement on “one evil perverted man” and not holding its supporters accountable + complimenting nazi germany in its “efficiency”????) but maybe (and this might be very controversial) i don’t want to see characters i love dressed in nazi uniforms for 40-something minutes jeus fucking christ 😭 i can’t imagine how this got approved at the time (1968 feels WAY too close to the event in question)
the whole thing felt like a fever dream. john meredyth lucas could have literally created anything else. even if he wanted to maintain the core of his story, he could have fucking changed the symbols and names oh my goddddd. why is mr. spock nazi-saluting people????!??:!/!:
i don’t intend on reblogging much of it for obvious reasons
just a heads up btw, patterns of force has a great shirtless kirk and spock scene but it also has nimoy and shatner running around in nazi uniforms for most of the episode for some reason 🤢
Gorsh I wish people were a tad bit better at branding Star Trek episodes cuz I walked into Patterns of Force expecting ‘oh haha shirtless Spock hahahaha’ and I got Nazis? WAHOO!
I've been thinking about "Patterns of Force" lately. It's an episode of Star Trek about fascism that is, itself, being antisemitic to Shatner and Nimoy (see for example this post here about it) but I remember thinking, the first time I saw it, how could a historian think that a little light fascism would improve a society?
Anyway it's been about 35 years since then, and almost 60 years since the episode was made, and 80 years since WWII, and now I understand that people will absolutely forget and think you can do a little light fascism or maybe some more advanced fascism and have it be a benefit and produce a nice orderly society and it's fine. it'll be fine.
It doesn't make the episode retroactively less awful or anything. It's just. Something I noticed.

"I've never heard of Megan Thee Stallion before" if you've ever said any variation of "Hot Girl Summer" then congratulations you've benefitted from an internationally popular Black female artist's creativity
"I thought those were just memes" yeah y'all tend to do this to a lot of things Black people create and/or do, while conveniently cutting them out in the process. You should really consider how easy it was and why that is. I do have a suggestion.
