i love seeing people add on to my rec list, or second the recommendations, or find new fics from it! i honestly just do them to have a record of things i really liked grouped together, but it makes me so happy when other people interact with it even if i don't really know anyone in the fandom! gaaaaahhh i love fanfic and the community it creates!
ofmd-adjacent fic recs
one thing i love is when fandoms can give you little off-shoots to get into and in this case i've really gone all-in with kiwi media, specifically the rhys/taika-verse. so here are a few of the excellent fics i've read with different characters played by them:
Peril & Proximity by triedunture, E, 11k, Anton/Viago from WWDITS - very sweet fic where Anton and Viago keep having to save each other from dangerous situations Hewitt To Me One More Time by @thehitcherismydaddy E, 80k, Murray/Telephone Commercial Guy from FOTC - I think this is the first time I've read something where a character that doesn't even have a full scene in canon gets fleshed out so beautifully. I started reading this before I'd finished watching Flight of the Conchords, and it made me so much more attached to Murray as a character, I've been rewatching the show obsessively Heartbreak in Stages by tinkerty_tonk, M, 11k, Anton/Viago - a telling of Anton and Viago getting together that stays very true to the style and humour of the film! The Burger Ring Door by @thehitcherismydaddy E, 44k, Psycho Sam/Minister from Hunt for the Wilderpeople - yet another amazing feat by this author of crack fics that turn into a gut-punch (in a good way). When I watched this movie I never would've guessed I'd be reading fic of the two most random comic-relief characters that don't even meet in canon. I think of this story often if I'm being completely honest!! Water Flowing Underground by @gaypiratebrainrot E, 22k, Ed/Stede(KIND OF) - I included this as OFMD-adjacent because it's certainly different from straight-up ofmd fic (I think) due to the meta implications. I generally don't go for RPF, and this isn't even quite that so I recommend it even if you don't like RPF. It generates very interesting discussions as well as being a heart-wrenching story with A+ smut, but also be sure to read all the tags before diving in
Hope it's ok to add to this excellent list:
Freemanji: A Love Story by bad_idea_in_a_glass M, 53k, Antwan Hovachelik/Nigel Billingsley. this is about two characters from two different films and it's just so good. seriously. would never have read it if it wasn't recommend to me by people I trust and I'm so glad I did.

ofmd fic recs
I've gotten back into fic-reading in a big way during the last couple months, and I have OFMD to thank for that...there are some truly amazing stories and I've barely even touched the surface. Here are some of my favourites so far. All of these are Ed/Stede and as usual....I have a strong preference for AUs lol
Life as a Series of Forward Rolls by @petrichorca T, 9k - Really cute AU where Ed is a retired Olympic athlete that Stede meets when taking his kids to gymnastics class Mid-Century Modern by @skrifores E, 38k - Fake marriage for immigration purposes AU! I love this one because of how it sets up the conflict between Ed and Stede (I won't say anything else but I was holding my breath while reading it) Good Bones by This_Will_Be_Our_Year, M, 10k - Post-S2 story about Ed and Stede working on the inn as well as working on their communication skills! Very satisfying follow up to the end of the season Leggy Blonde, you got it goin' on by @palavapeite T, 6k - Short and sweet gym AU. Very fun banter! CC: Brenda by heartroots, E, 12k - This one really spoke to me due to the anti-work and anti-Microsoft Teams undercurrent running through it. It's also a cute boring job AU with excellent sexual tension
WLW crime drama fic recs
Squeezing three fandoms into the same post because I find it funny that I've read fic for three different shows that all kind of fall into the wlw detective category:
Deadloch (more like crime comedy): I devoured this show in January and I really thought Dulcie and Eddie were going to resolve that sexual tension at some point. So naturally I went to ao3! One day I'd like to write something in this universe because it's so fun.
A Pretty Good Team by fleurlb, Dulcie/Eddie, 3k, T - Sweet fic featuring great banter and Eddie being protective of Dulcie in the aftermath of S1. New Normal by CloudsPassMeBy, Dulcie/Eddie, 4.5k, E - This is kind of an AU where Dulcie leaves the force to work on a fishing boat (of all things lmao) and meets Eddie there. Loved how they got together in this one! But also if you like Cath, she is dead in this one FYI (I personally like Cath and Dulcie but don't want to read fic about them lol)
Vigil (BBC): Watched this show just for Suranne Jones after being mesmerized by her as Anne Lister, and ended up really liking her character here as well! The only show on the list where the ao3 pairing is confirmed in canon lol
someone to you by pattsymountt: Kirsten/Amy, 11k, T - I love how this story weaves missing scenes together so well with what happened in S1. It's canon-compliant but adds so much to how they got together now i see daylight, i only see daylight by bethchildz: Kirsten/Amy, 3.5k, E - really sweet continuation of S1
Line of Duty: I read so much LOD fic back in 2021 but I don't think I got around to rec'ing much of it, so here are a couple of my all-time favourites
your hands on my cheek, your shoulder in my mouth by the_gay_possum: Jo/Kate, 14k, E - this was simply very hot "they hate each other but can't keep their hands off each other" and I ate it up wedding bell blues by @authorette44: Jo/Kate, 31k, M - funnily enough, another AU that takes place at weddings lol but this was the first fic I read for this pairing, before I'd even watched the show so it is significant to me! Kate and Jo keep meeting up at weddings. All of this author's works are great!
haven't posted in this blog in over two years and haven't written anything in longer, BUT i have started reading fic again on ao3 after a very long hiatus, so i'm going to post a couple rec lists for the different tags i've been reading lately....just because i always liked doing those
What do you do when you lose motovation for writing halfway through a sentence?
When it happens to me I just tend to
fic planning be like:
this is absolutely a call out post
hey guess who COMPLETED A WIP
writing is like this is the best idea i’ve ever had that’s the worst sentence i’ve ever written i’m a fraud i’m a genius i’m unable to focus i’m going to sleep
'feminine urge' this 'masculine urge' this what about the Ao3 urge to read fics about two oblivious burritos confessing their love.
the fact that fandom is a space where unfinished works proliferate is something to be celebrated. where else can you start a novel and never finish it and still people read and engage with what you’ve done and share your interest in it. where else can we get to read the work of people who do not have the time or capacity or resources for commitment to long projects over long time. i don’t know if there’s a way to measure the total volume and proportion of unfinished and abandoned works on ao3, but i’d bet good money it’s a large majority of multichapter works, and do you know what would happen if fandom required all works to be finished? none of that great volume of work would exist! what a tremendous loss would that be! fandom’s permissiveness of unfinished work is one of its greatest strengths as a creative environment, productive for readers and liberating for writers, and if we better recognized that, if we stopped allowing the dominant discourse of unfinished WIPs to be about failure or betrayal or whatever, we would get more stories, not fewer, more story, not less.
people reblogging this post to say that some of their all-time favorite fics are abandoned WIPs 🤝 people reblogging this post to say that it made them feel better about their own abandoned WIPs
PSA: Just a friendly reminder that whenever you start a creative project, you will invariably hit a phase where the Thing™️ appears horrendous and you start asking existential questions. But if you keep working, it invariably passes and starts to resemble something less like the devil’s vomit. Doesn’t matter if it’s art, writing, or what–this happens repeatedly. Carry on.
