hello!!! welcome to the getmorenonbinary blog!!!! a space made for enby folks to share experiences, talk about gender, and, especially, for nonbinary joy 💛

mod goes by they/it! and just refer to them as mod or as their username lol. not disclosing real name for personal reasons

they've been arguing about malgendering on twitter so here's the truth from me, the arbiter of truth (jk but ive been talking about malgendering long before it became a popular buzzword and heres my understanding of it)

malgendering is a form of transphobia wherein a transphobic person uses their victim's correct gender to harass or demean them. it is meant to be the inverse of misgendering, where a transphobe uses the victim's incorrect gender to harass or demean them.

misgendering towards trans women can be as simple as "youre a man." but malgendering is more insidious, like someone saying "you really are a girl" when she makes a mistake in order to insult her intelligence. the phrase "you really are a girl" is positive when removed from the context of the trans woman making a mistake and the transphobe's sarcastic tone that implies shes stupid in an misogynistic way.

if a trans man does something like standing up for himself against an unfair situation or asks for better accommodations/treatment, and a transphobe wants to use that to imply he is selfish and entitled, they might say "trans men really are men" which again, is a true statement on its own. but in the context of the situation, its clear the transphobe is using the stereotypical worst qualities of men to insult and undermine someone's very identity.

malgendering can be any severity of harm, just like misgendering. my mom slipping up in the first months of my transition and accidentally calling me "she", and a bigot shouting "YOURE A WOMAN YOULL NEVER BE A MAN" at me are both examples of misgendering, but one is much worse than the other and its the same with malgendering. being told "trans men are the men of the trans community" as an insult is annoying and rude but not a big deal. however, right now ICE is torturing trans men in concentration camps by forcing them to do pointless and grueling labor. and when they become exhausted, theyre told "I thought you were a man. if youre really a man this should be easy for you" these are both examples of malgendering. one is a microaggression, the other is literal torture.

malgendering happens equally to both trans men and trans women, its not something that is unique to anyone because it is a form of transphobia. the strategy is that if a transphobe tries to make a trans persons life as their true gender so miserable and unsafe, detransitioning seems like the safer and happier option. its psychological torment, moreso than the plain and obvious insult of intentional misgendering. so dont let it happen, call it out when you see it and dont be fooled by transphobes trying to erase the context and be like "what!! what i said was true!"

I'm all about nonbinary people using the terms lesbian, gay, or straight for themselves (I use lesbian and trixic, together.). The problem starts when binary people impose terms onto us.

A relationship between a woman and a nonbinary person HAS to be lesbian. Even if the nonbinary person in the relationship does not see themselves as a lesbian at all. Same for a relationship with a man and a nonbinary person, the nonbinary person MUST be comfortable with being called gay. When two nonbinary people are together, they don't get called enbian or cenelic, instead, binary people make terms up, even when we already have ones.

This seeps into fictional relationships, where a relationship between a woman/man and an enby automatically gets sorted into into yuri or yaoi, or even "yaori" (which doesn't acknowledge the nonbinary identity, nor what would made sense in japanese.)

trixic = nonbinary person attracted to women; nblw, e.g. "kriselle is my favourite trixic ship but i am partial to krisuselle"

toric = nonbinary person attracted to men; nblm, e.g. "i don't usually ship toric ships but i have such a soft spot for kerdly"

enbian = nonbinary person attracted to nonbinary people; nblnb, e.g. "i love enbian ships so i crackship kris/chara. go forth and kiss knife wielding enben"

diamoric = nonbinary attraction that doesn't conform to a same/opposite gender dichotomy, can be used to describe relationships including at least one nonbinary person, e.g. "kralsei is such a cute diamoric ship"

remember, YOU have the power to make inclusive language more commonplace! the language exists, so go forth and use it as much as you can!

we need less “trans women/men should be allowed in women’s/men’s spaces” and more “gender segregated spaces are inherently sexist and transphobic, and we should replace them with gender neutral spaces”

I hate that there's no room for nonbinary people in media. When a character's gender is "ambiguous" (neither seen as masculine nor feminine) and solely referred to with neutral terms such as "they/them" and person, individual, etc, people can't stand that. They can't stand the idea that a nonbinary person wouldn't want to be a boy or girl, isn't a boy or a girl. They have to be a girlthing or a boything (why are all nonbinary people things? Why is it never girlenby or boyenby?), they have to be transfem or transmasc. When they're put into relationships, they have to be either lesbian or gay. Nobody can be cenelian or enbian or diamoric or gai or strayt or trixic or toric. That doesn't exist.

I'm sick of it. I'm sick of seeing nonbinarity be shoved into category after category after category when the whole point of being nonbinary is that we want to opt out.

I know how you are treated in your ethnic culture, in your family. How they tell you "it's a white thing" even though it was your vibrantly-gendered culture that was steamrolled into a binary by Western colonisers. I know how it feels to not be able to use your correct pronouns in your mother tongue because no one knows the neopronouns you have to use in your binary gendered language. I know how you try to mix and explore sides of your native culture that you have never explored before. That you never knew you could blend so euphorically back when you used to live under the binary. I know the guilt you feel for not fitting in, for not being able to pass up your racialised binary gender experience. The ethic sisterhood, the racialised brotherhood. I know how it feels, to be able to pass as something amongst white people, but then the sweetness of that is taken from you as you remember that it is rooted in the racist binarism that continues to subjugate the binary members of your race. I know how to feels to feel invisible in the non-binary community, when most of our representation is white. I know how it feels to view androgyny or gender neutrality as impossible unless you are white; it was the same feeling you felt towards masculinity and femininity when you were binary gendered. I know how it feels to want to transition in a masculine or feminine way, but remembering those who pass as men or women in your ethnicity get killed and sexually assaulted at random by the system. I know how it feels to not want to risk it, to want to hide forever. I see you. I. See. You.

But I do not only know your struggle. I know the beauty of finding other enben of colour, who understand the intersections, the history. I understand the joy that is uncovering that history before colonialism, of the many different genders and modalities of you ancestors gone by. I know the smile that comes on your face when your chosen family (which can include blood relation) uses the right pronouns, the right neopronouns. I know the understanding that it's okay to still understand your racialised binary experience will forever be a part of you that white trans people might not understand. I know the joy of expression through hair, and the absolute ecstasy that comes when you too will realise that androgyny and gender neutrality is not just for white people, not just in white expression. It works in your ethnicity too. I know the feeling of peace that comes from being gendered in your desired way by a member of your race, realising you are surpassing the binarist system.

I know the feeling of great pain that comes from being an enban of colour, a black enban to be specific, but I also know the feelings of great beauty that you get from that intersection. It gets dark sometimes, but there is joy to be found. There is community to be found. There is unity to be found. There is life to be found as an enban/enby of colour. We are strong and we shine brighter than the sun.

Happy Nonbinary People’s Day black nonbinary folks! With how little we are represented it feels appropriate to dedicate something to you.

As a black Neutrois person I’ve never felt as if I had any voice or was acknowledged, sometimes it feels impossible due to how oversatured the nonbinary representation (not in reference to fiction) is with white people. I’ve also felt very alone, too. Like there was no community for folks like me.

Well, good news is that there’s an all black and trans discord server I’m in! It’s a wonderful space and the people there are very nice. It’s a relatively peaceful place and they’ll support you whenever needed. Very communal space!

I don't really go here because I don't consider myself non-binary (don't call myself that, don't want to be seen as that) for reasons I still can't figure out, BUT!!!

I've been getting more comfortable with being agender!!! I've always thought I was a binary trans man, which I still am, but lately I've been seeing other agender people talk about their experiences and I just.. related? In a way?? So after a while of mulling it over I now can semi confidently say I am agender! It's hard to accept honestly because I don't feel like I'm like other agender people but I think I feel better with labeling myself as male and agender. My identity is very specific and the agender part is extremely specific to my own brain and experience but the label is comforting.

I don't know why I don't want to label myself as non binary, I guess I just don't connect with the word. I don't feel like my agender identity is under the non-binary umbrella, but I know it technically is.

So, I don't really go here, but somewhat I do. I don't know where this was going. I'm tired and hungover today and it's 11 pm so forgive that. Feel free to not answer this one since I'm not non binary heh.

The 2026 Gender Census is now open!

The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.

It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
