yes actually another god features in this story, the Talespinner!
this is the god that dexter is magically bound to serve during his term. they are the god of all words spoken, so songs, poetry, that type of thing.
both gods are very playful and lighthearted on the surface, because they're made of lots of playful and lighthearted stories.
but they can quickly drop any pretenses that they have a human moral compass.
like if they wanted to say, make sure they still have an archivist when their last family is about to leave.
both of them are HIGHLY unethical in their recruitment strategies.
[also for anyone paying extra attention in my character designs, the colour symbolizing the gods' is BLUE. so dexter and the ghost are both very blue. you can see in my art of james that his eyes turn blue when he becomes immortal. the witches are also blue, but less than an outright servant of a god.]
they don't have a physical form in this story, but they do in their magical god realm place. the storytaker is less of a humanoid body, more of a giant swirling mass of constantly flipping pages of everything ever written, from the art of war to bathroom handwashing instructions. the talespinner is just audio, but has a very very intense presence. like soundwaves you can't hear but can feel vibrating the very earth. and also everything else. things feel weird when they're around because theyre constantly being as quiet as they can or else theyd obliterate everything for a couple miles from soundwaves alone.

but no lmao seriously the character of james is something really important to the story, but i intend of forshadowing it pretty heavily.
but since you're here on tumblr i'll tell you. it'll be more of a secret to youtube viewers.
He starts off getting immortality from the storytaker [bc the storytaker thinks it's fun to grant random plot relevant boons and curses to s
the magic system is actually not very developed. i kind of left it vague on purpose rn because i may need some magic thing to happen and i need to not worldbuild myself into a corner here.
but witches are a thing, they tend to specialize in a specific type of magic, i.e. stars, weather, plants, usually something in the natural world. this includes gravity. and colours and such.
gods exist, but the type of gods in this story are more magical beings created and powered by a thing made by people.
you can't have a god of agriculture without first inventing agriculture yourself. sort of the situation.
but there are other gods. the ones who deal with life or death or again, gravity and physics and all that, who are less in touch with mortals bc they don't need them to keep powering them up.
