Hey so here's a short analysis on Kinger's C&A exposition in episode 8, because it actually clearly states everyone's involvement in both the Red and Blue AI. And I think people are overestimating Scratch's involvement (as well as underplaying the rest of the dev team).

(UNDER THE CUT BECAUSE I ACTUALLY WROTE TOO MUCH LMAO????? Also this is just me yapping because I think all the time always and I went a little stir-crazy)

First, here's a quick transcript of the dialogue i'm looking at:

"No, we didn't make games. We were just developing articifical intelligence. Specifically Creative AI. The kind that could come up with its own ideas and create things within the programm. Caine was our first semi-successful attempt at that. I can't remember what we originally called him, but he was one of my greatest achievements as a programmer. (You made Caine?) Partially, yes. I got a few pointers from uhh well I can't remember his real name but his circus name was Scratch. That man was a genius. Caine was pretty rough around the edges though. I wasn't quite on Scratch's level of thinking outside the box, but it was good groundwork for something the rest of the team could wrap their heads around. I can't say the same for Scratch. His ideas were often so bizarre and abstract that the rest of the team had no idea how to work in his language. Either due to pure brilliance or the tumour in his head. He was trying to make something. What was it."

Let me start with the Blue AI, because that is the easier point of the two.

"Caine was pretty rough around the edges though. (...) but it was good groundwork for something the rest of the team could wrap their heads around."

It's plainly stated that the rest of the dev team worked on the Blue AI. Kinger did the groundwork and they built on top of that. How involved Kinger and Scratch were is nebulous. But, at least for Kinger, his wording implies it was a lot less than with Caine. It could also be no involvement at all. We don't know.

Now, onto Scratch.

I think this is the line that confused a lot of people.

"(You made Caine?) Partially, yes. I got a few pointers from (...) Scratch."

The "partially" implies not complete credit, but you'll see it's actually a problem of vague/weird wording here. Especially when it's followed up by the phrase "i got a few pointers". Scratch's involvement seems to be purely through advice and over-the-shoulder checking. This becomes much more obvious with how Kinger talks about Scratch. Such as:

"That man was a genius."

"I wasn't quite on Scratch's level of thinking outside the box"

He talks about Scratch like a more experienced and knowledgable coworker. Someone he admires and would reasonably go to for help. You can also see it in the way he puts down his own work in the same sentence ("semi-successful; pretty rough around the edges; I wasn't quite on Scratch's level"). This is where the "partially" strikes, because Kinger seemingly does not want to claim full credit (which I think is very in character). However, it is directly at odds with the statement "he was one of my greatest achievements as a programmer", which is as full of a claim as it can get (especially in contrast to his use of the collective "we" he used earlier to refer to the company "Caine was our first semi-successful attempt at that"). Personally, I think his pride in Caine and what he evolved into is at odds with his seeming lack of confidence in his own work, but that's going into headcanon territory.

Scratch's disconnect from the project is also easier to see with that lense. You can see where Kinger compares himself to Scratch and it squarely places Caine as his own work.

What he was talking about at the end of the transcript is definitely the brain scanner, aka the thing he was trying to make, and not any coding related to Caine. Neuroscans in this context would fit under "bizarre and abstract". And trying to code to account for a human brain would be hard to understand. Either because Scratch was just that brilliant and ahead of the game, or because he got really manic and incoherent trying to preserve his life.

Overall, I see Scratch's role in the dev team more as the experienced coworker, who was working on his own thing. That thing, of course, would become incredibly relevant later on and drastically change some lives.

thanks for the recommendation! i'll second all the other fics you mentioned, Small Gods in particular is one of my top favs. I don't have any nickname-specific fic recs, but here's most of my favorite works involving Kinger and Caine:

turn the lights off by @purplecatghostposts is a lil angstier, but I thought they wrote Kinger's headspace super well and did a great job depicting the resentment Caine would logically have for his absent creator. One of the first tadc fics I ever read!

Glitched Sick is by the same Anonymous author as "I was only trying to help you!", also really good. It's another instance of "Caine overworks himself and has to be cajoled into taking a break" which is of course a fav of mine.

One, stubborn, pathetic, delirious AI by @misterworms is another Caine sickfic, still in progress, with a panicky half-delirious Caine who can't restart due to a lack of storage space. I really like how computer code type language is used in this one.

The Signal by The_Penny_Tails (couldn't find a tumblr, sorry!): Kinger enters lucidity and realizes his boy needs a hug. Very sweet.

The Digital Prometheus by @jcleeful has Kinger repeatedly visiting Caine in the recycling bin, figuring out how to help Caine regulate his emotions and safely bring him back to the Circus.

less kinger & caine focused but i gotta mention em:

Call It Even by a different Anonymous author is a delight of miscommunication and misery, lol. Still in progress, deviates after episode 8, featuring a Caine who no longer wants to be here and the humans trying to figure out how to handle that. Lots of Caine in spider form, too!

this could all be new to us by @they-bite is a pair of post-episode 8 fics with Caine trying to hide away from the humans and the humans still trying to reach out despite his attempts at isolation. rlly rlly good, i reread it regularly.

Questions and Answers and its sequel series No Easy Answers by @justletmeon12 are truly some of the Caine fics to me. Excellent characterization and a ton of delightfully terrible miscommunication issues. Definitely meant to be read in order and I love all of the entries, but I will say that We're All in This Together is probably my favorite of the bunch. If you haven't read these already definitely check them out!
