Study: Spanking leads to bad behaviors, not better manners

“We as a society think of spanking and physical abuse as distinct behaviors.”

“Our analysis focuses on what most Americans would recognize as spanking and not on potentially abusive behaviors,” said Elizabeth Gershoff, an associate professor of human development and family sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. “We found that spanking was associated with unintended detrimental outcomes and was not associated with more immediate or long-term compliance, which are parents’ intended outcomes when they discipline their children.”

I wish this was as understood as “water is wet.” Unfortunately studies like this are so important because they can actually educate on this issue. And end debates about it.

If running this blog has taught me one thing (it would be “men are assholes” but if it has taught me two things) it’s that people loooooove to advocate for hitting kids.
