Me. I will sit on high-speed rail for fifteen hours. I’ll sit on it for days. I’ll write and read and nap and eat and then do it all over again. I’ll stare out the windows and see America from ground level and not have to drive. I’ll see the Rockies and the deserts and cornfields and the Mississippi River and your house and yours and yours too. I’ll make up stories in my head about the small towns I see as we go along. I’ll see the states I’ve yet to see because driving or flying there is a fucking slog and expensive to boot. I’ll enjoy the ride as much as the destination. And then I’ll do it all over again to come the fuck home.

I think the reason Certain People assume that you wouldn't take a 15 hour train ride when it's considered perfectly average to drive for that long is because you have to share the train with other human beings and you don't get to choose who they are. The Certain People who make these assumptions also don't like to take the bus or the tram for the same reason; you might have to share a space with poor folks or something and that's wholly intolerable to Certain People. They much prefer the dignified solitude of a personal vehicle and stupidly believe that everyone else must also think like they do, because why wouldn't they? Of course the average American would hate the train!

Anyway, romanticise the shit out of long train journeys. I've always wanted to ride in a sleeper car for like three weeks and just watch the world roll by outside the window and get rocked to sleep by the motion of the train at night. Make the journey itself worth something instead of just focusing on the destination, for fucks sake. There could be so much more to travelling than having the kind of uniquely uncomfortable conversations that happen while you're trapped in the horrible enclosed space of a fucking car.
