Okay, just wanted to share something super-quick about a teeny-tiny problem … my landlord is not renewing my lease and I have to move out of the very cheap apartment I’ve been living in for the past twenty years.

Obviously, this sucks, especially since I don’t have first and last month’s rent plus a pet deposit for Professor just lying around for the amount apartments are these days. What I would need is about five times what I currently pay for rent every month ($500, which … you can see why I haven’t moved in two decades).

Anyway, to keep a roof over me and Professor and the podcast’s microphone, I’ve set up a GFM. If anybody would like to help out, I’d be incredibly grateful. ❤️

I saw someone say Hyacinth telling Eloise she only thinks of herself was mean, and honestly … no. No, it’s not.

Here’s the thing. I love Eloise. I really do. But also, I’m a modern woman watching Eloise be a woman with modern sensibilities in a show set during the Regency era. It’s amusing for me to watch somebody else calling this out. It’s funny to watch Eloise make faces about having to talk to suitors. I feel what she feels when she is at a party and she’s like, “I need to get the fuck out of here.”

But dear God, sometimes she takes that attitude and directs it in a way that makes me want to throttle her.

Hyacinth is happy. She’s been able to lower her hems, she’s taking finishing classes, she finds all of this stuff about setting up a household and organizing a ball and laying out a table to be really interesting. And Eloise is being a dick about it.

It is very much like Hyacinth to be one of the siblings that would be most willing to tell Eloise to shut the fuck up and stop hashing her buzz. And honestly, I don’t blame her one bit for being that pissed about her sister sitting around being the Tom Servo who cracks jokes about everything she’s currently doing.

I’m not saying, Eloise has to fucking pretend that she enjoys all of this bullshit, because she clearly doesn’t. But it’s not that hard to tone it down because your sibling has a genuine interest in something you don’t. My brother is more of a gamer than I am and will talk for God knows how long about games that I have never played and will never play. Anything I have ever learned about Final Fantasy is unintentional and through him. But I don’t sit there and crack dismissive jokes about Final Fantasy because it’s not my type of game when he’s talking about something he enjoys.

The thing is, the look on Eloise‘s face afterward … I just genuinely think that is the moment where she has the thought that maybe she is being a little self-centered, and maybe it would behoove her to reach out to someone to respectfully engage with them. Maybe through letters, to someone she may soon find out lost their wife to suicide, leaving them alone to raise two misbehaving children.

They are hammering on about that motorcycle on “The Pitt” so much that I’ve stopped believing we’re getting a motorcycle accident for Robby. It’s just starting to feel like a bait and switch where we’re expecting he’ll be in a motorcycle accident and instead he’s going to have a heart attack as he’s walking out of work to his bike at the end of the shift.

I mean, God knows I’m not done with the one I’m working on yet because I’ve got a podcast episode to record and one to write for this week, but STILL.

A lot of you know that I normally post episodes of the podcast to Patreon on the last day of the month. I’ve never before had any problems with this, even if I post just after midnight where I am. I know it’s pushing it, but you give me a deadline and I’ll work my ass off until the last moment.

Again, never had a problem with it … until this month.

Patreon claimed the two episodes I posted on New Year’s Eve night counted for January rather than December. I’d bite the bullet and shuffle things around if I weren’t already broke from the holidays and depending on that paycheck to put towards my rent and my car loan.

I’m fortunate enough to have a landlord that understood and said pay when I get everything sorted. The car payment is more of a problem (I wish I could just give it up and take public transport, but not in this country, damn it), but at this point I’m more concerned about, like, paying for groceries for the next week.

If anyone can help out by donating to the above accounts, I would be so incredibly grateful. I am still on track to put out new episodes of both Disaster Area and Dandy Lion on the regular starting next week, so hopefully I’ll be able to do weekly episodes and be able to catch up at the end of the month.

But right now? Well, let’s just say I’m angry I’m out of gummies because I’m practically vibrating with anxiety right now.

My least favorite things about anti- UBI discourse is always the techbros whining that "nobody is going to work anymore! People will just watch Netflix all day!" and I have 2 responses:

1) Who the fuck cares. Who the fuck cares what people do with their time! That's kind of the fucking point!

2) People aren't going to stop laboring. Housework (look, it's right there in the word!) will still need to be done. So will maintenance on our homes and personal spaces. Children will still need carers, as will the elderly and disabled. There are millions of examples of ~work~ that we do all the time, uncompensated, that won't suddenly stop because we aren't forced to sell our labor to provide corporation's profits.

I'm not surprised that what is traditionally women's work is invisible to these dipshits, but it never fails to anger me.

Field studies have been conducted in several countries now, and the result is always the same - people will just flop about for a couple of months to recover from the burnout most people who have a job live with, and then they look for something to do. Some get a job with reduced hours, and some start doing charitable stuff like volunteering in soup kitchens and teaching others to do whatever their particular skill is. They socialize more, they are happier, and on average, people will work more, not less.

But the thing is, employers suddenly have to think about how to make their jobs appealing enough for someone to come and do them! It's hard to find someone to work for you for long hours under horrible conditions, if they can just choose not to; which shows you how voluntary our current system actually is.

As an older queer, allow me to say: the walls of the closet are load-bearing. It is our job as a community to stand in front of that door and tell everyone who wants to peek inside to fuck off.

There are so many reasons a person may choose not to come out and there is no reason a person would owe the public or a stranger that information. Certainly it's not owed simply because someone is famous.

We have fought for decades to make it safer for people to be open and authentic about themselves, but we are not yet there. And even if we were, the closet would still be something we need to maintain for those who are not ready to reveal that part of themselves.
