Thank you for sending me this @elararose !
For all its faults Tumblr has truly ruined all other social media for me because my friends all have Instagram and are all trying to get me on Instagram more but every time I open Instagram there are like fifteen things screaming for my attention and when I get over myself long enough to start scrolling it's like. Where is my chronological dash. Where is the following-only option. Who are these people. Why are there so many videos. Everyone is screaming at me. And then before I know it I'm thirty minutes into scrolling and I haven't seen a single thing that I actually care about. At least on Tumblr when I see stuff I don't care about I know someone I follow has found a new interest.
so back when my little brother was in high school, my mom went as a chaperone for their senior year field trip to an amusement park. which, you know, brave move to volunteer to supervise a bunch of high school seniors let loose in a wonderland of rollercoasters and sugar
my brother and his friends in this field trip group were truly great kids. but they were not above run of the mill teenage boy shenanigans. it’s the end of senior year, you and all your buddies are at the amusement park, you’re naturally going to want to act like a complete moron
there was one kid in the group who was especially prone to goofing around. committed to the bit, some may say. my mom knew that if nonsense was going to break out, he’d likely be at the center of it
so she goes up to this kid at the very start of the trip and says “hey, i’m kinda worried about this chaperoning thing. this might be a lot to ask, but can you help me keep an eye on everyone? you wouldn’t have to do anything big, just be an extra set of eyes for me.”
friends, this kid proceeded to run their field trip group like the fucking us marines. everyone is at the meet up spots at the designated time. everyone waits in line for the rides like a bunch of boy scouts. the second the horseplay gets too out of hand, this kid is getting it back under control
it’s incredible how differently people act based on the expectations you set. instead of going to this kid and saying “hey, i know you’re trouble, so i’ve got my eye on you,” my mom went “hey, i know you have influence in your peer group, so i think you can help me.”
treat someone like a problem, they’ll act like a problem. but give people a chance to help, make them feel important, and they usually rise far above the occasion. it was a stroke of genius that i’m honestly still in awe of
USians, find your reps and call them. This is yet another book ban bill targeting transgender people and anything that mentions race, civil rights, or historical figures of color.
HR 8705 text if you want to dig into it.
Sample script for blue reps:
My name is [_____] and I live in [zip code/district/neighborhood]. I'm calling about HR 8705, the latest attempt by the GOP to erase entire communities from the story of the United States. If passed, it will have a suppressive and damaging effect on our schools and libraries. Teaching a full and honest picture of U.S. history is not indoctrination. Editing and sanitizing that history in favor of patriotic propaganda and white nationalist talking points, however, is. Please do everything in your power to block this horrible bill.
Sample script for red or purple reps:
My name is [_____] and I live in [zip code/district/neighborhood]. I'm calling about HR 8705, the so-called Civics and History Advancement to Restore Learning, Integrity, and Education Act. That's a lot of words being thrown around to say the federal government should get to decide what our local schools teach and how they teach it. If it passes, it will be such a huge waste of time and money. I am opposed to this kind of big government overreach, and I hope Representative [____] opposes it too.
knight/lord ships are like. what if i would die for you. what if i wanted you to live for me. what if i wanted to touch you but could only be satisfied with being near you. what if i could touch you but only through the safety of our gloves. what if i couldn’t stop thinking about you right next to me. what if i bloodied my hands for you and never looked back at the wreckage. what then
what if i wasn’t allowed to love you. what if i loved you anyway. what if you knew and i knew but we wouldn’t dare to take that step. what if we made meaningful eye contact as i knelt at your feet and devoted my whole being to you. what if i whispered your name for only you to hear
“my lord” is actually something that can be so personal
what if i said “my lord” but i actually meant “my love”
honestly given my parents whole [gestures vaguely] i am actually incredibly well adjusted

y'all ever wonder why people aren’t just like. nice to each other
I don’t think I’m an asshole. I try, sincerely try, to be a decent person.
But. I’ve noticed that on the relatively rare occasion when I literally have no deadlines, no schedule, no worries at all, that I am in fact just much kinder, more patient, and more helpful. When I have no stress on me, I become that guy who will miss his train to explain how the metro works. I will carry stuff for you. It’s just… I’m a better person when I’m entirely relaxed.
And I think maybe that’s across the board? That maybe we’re all low-key kinda stressed all the time, and that makes us more hurried, less inclined to help, less compassionate… simply more selfish and less caring.
Which doesn’t mean “You’re stressed and that makes you EVIL!!!!”. I don’t think people are necessarily like that. But maybe we just have less kindness to share when we’re like that. Maybe you’re normally a saint and the crushing weight makes you just be pretty nice most of the time. Maybe you’d normally be sullen and angry, and it makes you into a huge asshole who actively makes things worse for everyone. Maybe it makes a big difference, maybe it makes a little one. I think maybe we have trouble being nice to each other because of that, though. Because we’re always rushed and worried and stressed out all the time.
Maybe that’s why the so-called friendliest countries are often the ones either with really good social safety nets (so less background radiation worry), or the ones that have culturally built-in de-stressing methods (so ways to keep a more even keel)…
somebody posted this Calvin and Hobbes strip and i cannot overstate just how topical this fuckin thing is

George Tiller was murdered 13 years ago today (May 31 2022)
People noting this anniversary reminding me again that it is such an insane failure of the pro-choice movement that we do not as a nation think of George Tiller as a civil rights hero and additionally a martyr at the level of MLK Jr. or a Kennedy. So, you know, do your part, etc.
"Sys how is your decent into fiber arts hell going"
Glad you asked. I have arrived at 'modern flax is Bullshit compared to what we had in historical textiles, the flax widely available for handspinning is basically the tow that would be discarded from textile creation and used with tar to caulk ships back in the day'
This naturally led me down a hole of 'why is the staple length of this stuff a bullshit 6 inches' and the answer is 'we have bred modern flax more for the oil than the fiber because cotton usurped the place of everyday textile thanks to slavery and the cotton gin'
Anyway, THIS led me to a rabbit hole that culminated in me finding flax seed bred for proper 30 inch tall plants for fiber, sold by some fellow minded nerds on a website that has not been updated since 1998 and you have to email them to buy anything.
Anyway how are all of you doing.
I FAILED YOU ALL here is the site. You can also buy flax fiber from them. The PROPER shit, not the hot garbage ass tow fiber sold as flax top for handspinners.
'machine combing shortens the flax fibers by several inches'
This right here is part of why modern linen is a pale shadow of historical linen. Legitimately it cannot be properly replicated by machines. It HAS to be made by human hands if you want the best quality.
i have a suggestion
