I was at the Catholic thrift store in my neighborhood (large Spanish-speaking population) looking for wired ribbons to attach to my LARP kit (I am playing an icy wind elemental) and while I found a really cool spool of velveteen ribbon with snowflake decals, (shiny!) I ALSO found some Vintage Flame Retardant Garland (aka the Festive Asbestos Snake), and trying to explain to a very nice Catholic woman with English as a second language (and likely did not grow up with The Mesothelioma Commercials) that I did not want to BUY the Christmas Decoration that gives you Lung Cancer, but had instead emerged like some kind of Autistic Asbestos Arbitor to save her patrons from the Tinsel Terror was a very stressful few minutes

The work cafeteria decorated for Cinco de Mayo except they put out stickers of sugar skulls with the pinatas and sombreros and maracas and stuff

I think we should put out plastic skeletons for the Fourth of July to even it out

Bus Chicken Day 3

I packed a sandwich baggie of oats today, and only after pouring it out onto the ground did I realize just how big a serving size it is for bus stop chicken. But he seemed really excited about the oats and let me hang out pretty close to him in exchange for food.

While I did have chickens on my childhood farm, I'm applying stray cat logic to befriending this guy and it seems to be working.

It's the Weekend now, so I won't be able to check on him til next week.

I met a chicken at the bus stop yesterday (I live in a suburb so it's not crazy, but it is a little strange) and since he seemed skinny and lost I gave him the leftover rice from my lunch.

Bus Stop Chicken is still here today (this is just the street side of the stop)

I did not have any leftovers from my lunch so he wasn't interested in me, but I'm really concerned by how skinny he is. So I'll be bringing him some snacks tomorrow.

I do not believe in the Chicken Distribution System and also live in an apartment, so adopting this rooster is out of the question.

The bus driver thinks he might have escaped from a petting zoo that's apparently down the road.

I was wondering if you'd be able to help me get to the bottom of a German language mystery.

You see, I'm in an (English) production of Frozen, and have actually been listening the German musical soundtrack to learn my parts in songs, since it's mixed a little differently so it's easier to hear the male vocals.

I was listening to Love Is An Open Door/Liebe Sie Öffnet Tur'n and hit a translation I was confused by.

So in English, Hans says "I mean it's crazy/we finish each other's-" and Anna interrupts with "sandwiches."

In German though, Hans says "Auch wenn's verruckt klingt/ Zwei Menschen und ein -" and Anna interrupts with "Gebäude"

Which I guess means building? I'm wondering if there's a joke I'm missing - is there a saying that finishes that phrase normally that starts with "Ge"?

I somehow completely missed this ask so my reply here is super late, I'm sorry! The English version contains the joke that Hans (supposedly) is about to say "I mean it's crazy / we finish each other's sentences", which Anna then incorrectly finishes with "sandwiches" (which is also something you can "finish", i guess) In the German version, Hans is about to say a similar phrase, "Zwei Menschen und ein Gedanke" (though the more common is "Zwei Dumme - Ein Gedanke", "two idiots - one thought", a german version of "great mind's think alike") Anna then incorrectly finishes the sentence with "Gebäude", which also starts with Ge-, you're correct to think that that's the overlap. Unlike the finishing sb. else's sandwich making sense though, "Zwei Menschen und ein Gebäude" really doesn't make any sense on its own and seems to have been a feeble attempt at adding a joke there. (I read online that it seems to not have been part of the movie itself and only added to the soundtrack later on?) Hope this helps!

Doing Frozen in Utah really highlights a uniquely Utahn issue: Utahns swallow the 't' in a lot of words. Most of our actors have to think about saying “moun-Tain” instead of “moun-in.”

So when one of our young actors finally hit the ‘t’ after struggling with the line "My Lord! [Anna's dress] was found at the base of the North Mountain!" We all started cheering - completely forgetting that, in the context of the play, we were celebrating the fact that it appeared our Princess had become a naked, frozen corpse

Ranking Olaf Stunt Doubles

The Olaf and Sven puppets for my production of Frozen are still being made, so our puppeteers have made some creative decisions for their stand-ins while learning blocking.

I'm not taking photos of my fellow actors without permission (and frankly, using images I found online is funnier) so please enjoy my best recreations

HOODIE OLAF - 5/10

Hoodie Olaf is operated by hanging the hood over their fist to form the head - and then using a free hand to operate the "arms." Hoodie Olaf both loses and gains points for being too damn practical.

Hoodie Olaf is actually probably closest to how the actual puppet will be operated. He is also available at your local Old Navy.

SOME KIND OF MUPPET OLAF - 2/10

I did not ask, but I believe Some Kind of a Muppet Olaf came from an old production of Avenue Q. He was only used at one rehearsal before I think he might have been fired for being too different from how eventually Olaf will be operated.

It pains me to give him such a low score, given that I love muppets, but ultimately he just couldn't fulfill the rollaf of Olaf due to his lack of legs (or really any kind of aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-bdomen.)

HOBBY LOBBY SCARECROWLAF - 8/10

Scarecrowlaf works a lot better as a stand in - the final Olaf puppet will be operated by a puppeteer standing directly behind him, and 'crowlaf has free hanging arms and legs.

I was actually doing choral rehearsal when crowlaf was introduced, but walked back upstairs to the main stage to run my scenes, caught sight of our youngest Olaf actor maneuvering this thing and laughed so hard I almost fell over
