I’ve been trying to find this post again for ages
i will reluctantly be back in tumblr (probably) after twitter going down so if you know me from twitter dot com i am ssuperrobin there!
in my anti-tim drake era. rich mf's parents aren't around :( and he decides to become a fucking stalker? not even for like. a good cause or anything. he's just like 'yeah im gonna stalk these people cause i think they're cool.' people r always like 'oh he's so smart and he's a mastermind' yeah? what was he gonna do if done rogue spotted him and decided they wanted to know what this kid knew? he was gonna endanger batman's whole ass mission, his life, and his sons lives, just so he could take some cute pictures?
and then when jason dies, he's like huh. wow i could totally insert myself here and become part of my favorite reality tv show :)' haha and he fUCKING BLAVKMAILS BRUCE
idk how people just brush that shit off he fucking preyed on the feelings of a grieving father to what? play dress up? like good for you!! you weaseled your way into the home of a grieving family!!!
like yeah. his parents weren't the best. doesn't give him an excuse to exploit someone else's family so he can live out some fantasy where he has a loving home. like ok? go off u weasel ig. u could have just. done the normal and sane and legal thing where u try to make friends by talking to them! instead of following them with a camera for years gathering blackmail
tim drake didn't need robin. he had everything he could have ever asked for at his fingertips, opportunities and money and privilege. he became robin not because he deserved it, but because he wanted it.
im so fucking tired of rich white boys just throwing themselves around like they're the shit. tim drake is the most boring, infuriatingly arrogant, overhyped asshole since t*ny st*rk.
people act like jason was wrong for attacking tim like he wasn't the one who stole his title, the thing that made him magic. from him. if tim drake really wanted to help people, he should've put on a mask himself. he had the money, and obviously the free time to do it. but no. what he did was steal the uniform of a boy who was barely cold in his grave, because robin will always be a game to him. something he can pretend he is do he doesn't have to look himself in the mirror and see the privileged, misogynistic, arrogant creep who stares back at him.
hello i am here to explain why this rant makes no sense canonically!
first of all, i'd recommend reading Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying carefully before speaking about how tim became robin since it is the storyline where tim becomes robin.
he was younger than 13 when he did all the "these people are so cool so i am gonna stalk them". he was literally a preteen fanboying on batman and robin who also had too much free time and no parental control over him. does that make the stalking okay? no of course not. but would he even be able to actually stalk when he was in a boarding school outside of gotham city, and a lonely place of dying takes place during vacation week which was his last chance? also you should be taking the fact that he was literally a child into consideration too.
it's also very funny that you kept repeating blackmail when tim was collecting photographs and newspapers for the sake of having a collection. like come on now. all of these happened between the ages of 9-13 and you are telling me batman let himself got blackmailed by a child who hadn't even hit the puberty yet.
continuing, tim didn't go to bruce telling him "make me robin because you need one and i have blackmail on you." tim went to dick (he actually went to haly's circus to find dick too) and asked him to return to robin (mind you he didn't know why dick wasn't robin anymore) and even cried when dick refused it. nowhere in those dialogues there is a part tim asking to be robin.
tim inserting himself into family? if he didn't put on that costume on a whim there wouldn't be a family left to "insert himself into." and it was alfred who drove him there too.
of course tim didn't need robin. the point of tim becoming robin was never about tim himself. it's batman needing robin. (also please pay attention to what tim says in panel 4). i don't want to put the entire comic into this and there's an image limit, but if you go check all of the panels tim is speaking with bruce in the comic there's not one piece of dialogue even implying there was blackmail involved. it's the opposite of blackmail even.
tim not becoming robin because he deserved it? welp! alfred and dick do not think so! neither does bruce! (robin (1991) #1)
i'm not even going to talk about how you compared tim drake to tony stark because that sure is a whole another monster to deal with.
also! if we are going to talk about stealing a title, it was jason who did it first when robin meant something special to dick, but i am neither a jason anti trying to paint him as a bad guy nor i am talking about jason becoming robin. would damian or steph be the arrogant little shit if tim didn't become robin and they were the next on the line? no! were they assholes for taking robin after tim? still no! it's called a mantle and it was jason who made robin into a title after dick.
was jason right on attacking tim for "stealing" robin? again, no. this might be subjective based on which perspective you are looking at the situation from, but i offer you this perspective (if you want to read, teen titans (2003) #29): jason broke into titans tower, hurt the entire team only to attack tim. and his reasonings? petty. "i was here first" "show me what you have that i didn't" "i was a titan too, why don't i have a statue?" (while knocking donna's statue down. like damn keep her out of this) and just,, generally implied jealousy for some reason and all the while he didn't even have the correct idea of tim's time as robin and before robin.
and please tell me you aren't defending jason for beating tim while telling him he isn't good enough to be robin, then writing "Jason Todd was here" on the walls with his blood and saying this was all because tim allegedly stole robin from him.
i am not gonna deny that tim sometimes gets the rich and white boy privilege, because we all know how elitist and misogynist dc writers can be. but people calling tim misogynist and a serial cheater (what the hell, which comics are you even reading because we sure as hell didn't read the same ones) is completely made up or writers like ch*ck d*xon projecting on characters they write. and you know it's projection from how it's not a consistent thing in his personality, and there are panels of tim being the opposite of misogynist and sexist. when it's y'all's favorite character you blame the writers (justifiably) but when it's a character you learned about from tumblr or various other fandom spaces without reading and seeing it for yourself, it's suddenly all blamed on the fictional character.
so basically, the rant you just wrote either consists of the stuff other tim antis picked and chose and warped to show tim as a bad person, or the jokes made inside the fandom that does not fit into the canon 😁
hey lmao thank you so much for responding. it's pretty true that a lot of my opinions have been based on fanon interpretations of tim, so i want to thank you for putting some stuff into context. i still don't like tim but my perspective was definitely warped by other people's interpretations of him. i do want to clarify about the blackmail thing : i think in my original post i was a little clumsy in my wording. (i wasn't writing a thesis paper i just was ranting) it's not that i think tim like, went to batman and was like 'do this or else' it was more the inherent power balance this kid has information which he could ruin your entire life with, even if he never intended to do so.
idk. also i definitely fucked up with tgw post by not specifying that a lot of my problems with tim aren't really with his canon version (as im not much of a comics reader) but with how the fandom treats him. i definitely do think that the actual character has flaws, and from what i have read he's pretty boring, but my main problem is tge woobification he under goes to make him. likable. instead of some gary stu.
also, about the jason attacking titans tower thing. i don't think it was entirely right, what he did, but it was certainly understandable, and i think more engaging and kind of cathartic than if jason just, was like 'yeah that's fine.' and didn't lash out at tim? if that makes sense. idk.
im definitely not gonna sit here and tell people how they should interpret the comics lmao i just have an inherent suspicion of rich superheroes lmao. (bruce not entirely exempt) but thank you for filling in some gaps, i really appreciate it.(๑→‿ฺ←๑)
thanks for taking time to reply and explain the situation! of course i have no right to tell anyone to like a certain character and the aim of my reply was just to explain how the stuff really happened. you are valid for not liking tim, it's not like you have to.
the problem with fanon tim is fandom usually either tries to show him like an angel, baby him constantly or infantilize him; or try to show him like a selfish, horrible and up to no good. the problem with these is they are usually taking canon (or sometimes while not even knowing canon or the context of it), turning it inside out and bending backwards to fit it into their own narrative of how they view stuff about him. and tim is too complex of a character (as a lot of comic characters tend to be due to being in a lot of stories, having a lot of different writings and at one point it's up to writers' interpretation) to be viewed as either this or that, and tim is neither of these obviously.
a good portion of fan content tend to be changed so much from how tim actually is, it's a whole new character. tim coffee addict thing for example. he drank coffee barely 3 times on panel and somehow fanon made it tim's whole personality. there are a lot of examples like this, and imagine my surprise when i started reading comics to see that and since then i barely interact with purely fanon side of the fandom.
in fact, a lot of comic readers including me hate fanon tim too for the reasons i stated above, so it's perfectly understandable that you don't like it either.
as a tim stan (this is important knowledge because i might be biased on the things i am about to say for this reason) who read a lot of comics for tim appearances or the ones he is a main character in, i think he is far from being boring. of course he has flaws as a character, otherwise he'd be actually boring. flaws make a character interesting. it wouldn't really be fun to read a character who is always right and never makes mistakes. i can't convince you he's interesting just by listing the stuff he did here, but i can recommend giving reading some stuff (especially team ups like young justice (1998) etc.) with tim written as a main character a try (young justice specifically is actually fun to read outside of just tim aspect too). i like tim's solo comics too but if you don't like the character you won't enjoy them 🤷
about jason, of course i wouldn't expect jason to just go "yeah sure fine". but beating a 16 year old half to death and attacking titans just to get to him, because life continued going on after his death is the part where i'm starting to criticize him. i understand the amount of trauma he's been through and how his view of things are different, but explanations are not excuses 😞 and it's not the only time tim gets a beating from jason either.
