Officiating: Human vs. Computer
This is a subject that comes up in my discussions about sports seemingly every season of every sport. But yet again, in the span of a few hours, across two different sports, humans have yet again ruined the outcome of a game. Time and time again, I receive the same reasons to defend the humans: "It'll ruin the sanctity of the game. Bad calls are just part of the game. Well, if that call should be reversed than all the other plays should be looked at. It'll waste too much time and add to the length of the game. The team that got screwed had enough chances to come back. There's more than one bad call that lead to their loss."
Why do we play sports? Why do we watch sports? It's too witness and be a part of competition for those representing our city. We play sports to show he is the better or best team. People are emotionally and financially attached to these sports. We pay for this product. We bet for this product. We let it take our mind away from the rest of the things going on in our life. We want to see the BEST team win. If someone is not doing their job right, we are deprived of this.
An umpire / referee / official is given a role to determine and execute the correct call on any given play. Their JOB is to make the right call. Yet in the last few years, we've seen a number of problems.
The called third strike in the picture above from last night's game. The winning interception thrown by Russell Wilson to Golden Tate. The foul called on the completely clean block by Michigan's Burke in the Final. The English Goal that crossed the goal line but was never acknowledged.
Two of these plays were game deciders and many will say they had their chance to close it out earlier. But that is not the point. The point is that every other participant of these games are penalized and officials cannot be penalized because they are not competing. Someone must be accountable.
There is nothing more demoralizing to an athlete or team than when they have unquestionably done their job to perfection and are either penalized or disregarded. It indisputably swings the momentum of the game or the season.
Michigan lost the final game. England didn't move on. Green Bay was robbed of a win that would have given them a bye week and home field advantage over the 49ers in round 2. That batter lost the game with the tying run on first.
If the people put on those fields and courts simply cannot do their job and award the better team, it is time to move on to technology. And thankfully, FIFA has come to their senses to adopt technology that will trigger when a ball has crossed a goal. The MLB already has a computerized strike zone that is instantly available to those watching on tv or the internet. Use it!
Forget tradition. We should, in this day and age, have technology with the ability to rid the game of any controversy or confusion. The questions, "Did quarterback crossed the line of scrimmage before throwing the ball," "Was that a charge," "Was that a strike," whatever, will all be answered. Kill the problem at the source and you kill any other controversy that could be used in defense of allowing blown calls.
