Nutrition Sociology Seminar
Experiencing food in a different way - This was one topic of the seminar taught by Professor Brombach in the beginning of July here at the German Nutrition Society, Bonn. Participants had closed eyes while trying different foods. Professor Brombach tried to trick their mind by telling wrong facts about the tasted foods, e.g. that the spaghetti would be a dead insect. Tasks and Tips for Future Interns:
Future tasks for future interns: Writing a new health report - My main task was to develop a health report. My supervisor from the child and youth department really wants me to stay. There can be written a lot about the health status of pre-school children and every year might be different.
Supporting the staff with IT problems - All of them know what they are doing but when it comes to Excel, details in Word etc. some of them need a bit support. You should be very patient and I think my own patience developed a lot.
Tips for future interns: I had such a great experience and I was told that the way I acted and behaved was one key factor why everybody was friendly. „Wie man in den Wald hineinruft, so schallt es heraus“ „What goes around comes back around“ I think I had a personal conversation with nearly every colleague. They did not only talk about work but also about their private life. To be open-minded, listen and smile are in my opinion three important things to keep in mind during the internship period and also for your future work life. Within this public health department I was told from the beginning that I should always ask questions if I have some. This is what I did. I think it is very important as it reflects that you are interested in what and how your colleagues are doing their jobs. I also have been very flexible when it came to extra tasks. One day I got all of the sudden three different tasks from three different agencies. You should try to pay attention and work concentrated in order to fulfill the tasks successfully and within the given time frame.
Pollutant measurement
I have been together with two hygiene engineers at an empty school to measure pollutants. Another school considers to use the building again and it is therefore important to check its condition to find out what has to be done before using it again.
Clean air is important for our health and we spend approx. 80% per day indoors.
The health engineers focus on the following:
Smells
Damages
Material of the walls, ceiling and floors
Air pressure, temperature and humidity
Warning strike
The public sector demands more money and is therefore striking today and tomorrow. They say that there is a growing gap between the salaries in the private sector and their sector. Through the strike they aim to get attention and put pressure on the employers. Within the public health department especially in the agency for children and youth health not many people are striking. The explanation was that they have a high responsibilty for the children which have to get examined. If they would strike some families which are in need of support may fall through the system. They don’t want to risk that because this could mean the loss of the opportunity to improve a child’s future. They see the importance of their work and this is the actual reason why they deserve more money.
New Week - New Challenge!
I guess many of you guys would love to be in my situation right now. My supervisor asked me to calculate the significance of some values for different cities / districts and states. The theme is cancer which is interesting to look at but I nearly forgot all the Excel commands to find out the significance. I started googling but I could not find anything which explained in detail what I have to do. That’s why I have asked a friend of mine who does statistics every day to give me some support. He will explain to me which Excel steps i have to do in order to fulfill the task. As far as I know there is no one within the public health department who is able to do this. So I am very glad to get some help from outside. From my point of view it is always a good idea to ask a person who is not working with you for help as long as you keep in mind that the data you are dealing with is not confidential. My friend told me that it would be easy for him to explain it to me. I am looking forward to learn (again - We did this in a module last year.) how to calculate the significance.

I have been able to work according to my learning objectives. I also added some more objectives. Nearly every day I learn something new which is at the same time often relevant for my study programme.
I have already accomplished learning objectives 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8 and I am currently working on objective number 3.
Everyone in the public health department is very friendly and open minded. Therefore it is easy for me to ask questions and I am planning to ask my supervisor to go through my objectives again so I will get some work to be able to achieve all of them.
A typical day at the office:
Morning:
My work starts between 8 and 9 o’clock. It depends whether I have a meeting or something else before I start my regular work.
When I enter the department I walk through the hallway and say hi to everyone whose door is open. If no patients are in the building everybody does so which makes the atmosphere very friendly and welcoming.
In the morning i work in my own office on the kommunal child health report for the year 2013. I develop tables showing for instance how many children got the required vaccinations.
I also develop questions such as: “Are children with a low SES more obese?” and illustrate them in graphs and/or tables. Sometimes I ask for files from patients which have to be typed into a programme.
Noon:
During lunch I have a 30min. break. I eat my packed lunch and sometimes my collegues and I order something together. Then I change my task: From this point of time I work for the infection and health agency.
I support them with different organisational tasks.
At the moment I am writing an overview about diseases and pathogens which must be reported. I get confronted with different bacteria and viruses we had in our last module in food safety which is great to experience. From time to time a disease gets reported and the hygiene inspectors and ingenieurs have to do a lot of research to find out as much as possible about what the patient did during incubation time to elimnate people who might have to get treatment as well.
I also accompany the hygiene ingenieurs when they do different hygiene inspections.
Afternoon:
I work until 4pm Monday to Wednesday. Thursday is a long day where I work until 5pm and on Friday I leave the office at noon. I always take the bus and the ride takes about 30min. and I walk from the station another 10min.
Another special wednesday:
Two days ago (February 19th) I was invited to a presentation for future alternative practitioners held by my internship supervisor, who is also the head of the public health department. It was great. I had to act as a patient . One time I had low blood pressure and another time a Gastritis. Before the presentation I got two pages of information about the symptoms I had to show. The future alternative practitioners had to behave like in a doctor-patient situation and tried to find out what my symptoms could mean. I also learned general things about human anatomy, naturopathy, the most widespread German diseases, mental disorders and last but not least a practical exercise how to measure the blood pressure. Through this course the future alternative practitioners aim to get a good preparation for their final exam. Next week will be the second part and I am also going to participate.
What makes Salzgitter special?
Salzgitter is spread into 31 different sections and it’s 223.94 km² big which makes it one of the largest cities of Germany when it comes to area. The city is very diverse having many families with a non-German ethnic background. This is why a lot of information is translated, e.g. into Turkish. There are many programmes to increase the living standard and quality in Salzgitter for migrants. It is obvious that Germany is very social when it comes to foreigners. Asylum seekers for instance get the first 3 days free accomodation in Salzgitter but this can be different in another city!
Wednesday, February 15th - A day with a health inspector:
On wednesday I followed one hygiene ingenieur to a home for disabled people. – The picture above shows the name of the organisation.
The director of the residence asked for hygiene and health advice: The home has a need for a flusher-disinfector and one had to ensure that hygiene rules were followed and taken into consideration before any reconstructions for the flusher will be made. It was a friendly atmosphere. The workers from the home asked many questions and it was great to see that the hygiene inspector came up with several ideas how to incorporate the new facility in the bathroom without affecting the health and comfort level of the people.

My internship place:
The public health department is responsible for the town Salzgitter and administrative district Goslar. As I have written before, it has many different tasks. I will present two agencies a bit more detailed.
The agency for child- and youth health (CYH) does among other things the pre-school medical examination which is mandatory for every child in Germany before it enters the school with the age of 5/6.
The agency for infection and health protection detects and stops outbreaks of, e.g. meningitis.
Those two agencies are the ones I am most incorporated with. I got introduced to two programmes from the CYH. The recorded data of every pre-school child is written into a programme which can then be used by the statistical programme.
What do I do?
My tasks involve creating a health report about the pre-school children for the school year 2013. At the same time I am supporting the infection and health protection agency in data assessment and analysis. I have the opportunity to observe the steps which are done to protect the public from diseases and it is very interesting to get confronted with bacteria which I have just learned about during my studies.
From time to time I have the chance to accompany a colleague who has work outside the department or look at the tasks from other agencies of the department.

February 5th: A day in school for dental prophylaxis
Last wednesday I had the chance to visit together with one assistent from the children and youth tooth health office a primary school. I supported the children who had to conduct various tasks most in form of games. Pupils enjoyed this class a lot and I think the department for dental health care found a great way to convey the message of the importance of taking care of your teeth.
Reflections on my first week as an intern:
The first week of my internship was mainly an introduction to the different tasks which a public health department holds.
It begins with medical certifications, children and youth health and ends with AIDS and addiction counselling. All in all there are 12 agencies within the department focussing on various public health themes and I hope to get introduced to most of their work.
I already enjoyed the first week and I cannot wait to learn more.

Finding my internship and the application process:
My plan was to go back to Germany with the aim to get an insight in the health and nutrition situation from a political point of view. I applied at many different places before I realised that only 2 months of internship are just not enough time for German organisations.
Finally I asked someone from my family who holds a represantative position for the city Salzgitter. The person was convinced that I would be able to intern there so I sent a cover letter and my CV. After 2 weeks I had the acceptance letter from my internship host in the health department.
I am very happy that I get the opportunity to intern in this setting and I cannot wait to start my work.
