No. It’s true. For all we know Ortega or Myers could be closeted and the fact Gough and Millar won’t provide queer representation for their respective characters… neither in a romantic capacity or an aromantic one…
That’s not good. I’m not saying that’s the case but if it is… that’s really not good. It’s downright shitty even.
This isn’t a “just for the audience” thing. Not anymore.
In fact it’s doubtful it ever was just for the audience given even an actress from Xena was a closeted queer and desperately needed that queer representation.
The amount of times I’ve come across TV shows with actors that play queer characters and they eventually come out because of their experience playing them…
Queer representation in any capacity is very important!
It’s 2025 for fuck sake. Why are we making excuses?
Why can’t more creators be like the Xena creators and just fucking accept and embrace the queerness there?
When their actors come up to them and say “Hey - I need my character to be like this for my own sake in playing them” why can’t they support that request?
Do they have any respect for them as human beings?
You see that’s what’s bothering me about the Wednesday creators: Gough and Millar. Not the fact they’re not making Wednesday and Enid canon but the fact their own lead actress has requested something and they won’t support her. Or it doesn’t seem like it.
I mean what the fuck is she an executive producer for if they won’t even let her make the changes she wants to?
Almost 30 fucking years ago a team of creators/cast/crew were in complete solidarity with each other that support was immediate. Given without any hesitation.
What has happened 30 years later that this isn’t true?
It’s very fucking frustrating, don’t you think? Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe Ortega did get her way. But I doubt that. Not with knowing that the network/streaming service is Netflix because they’re right fucking bastards when it comes to treating their employees/partners properly.
Sure it’s a different time and place but I honestly think we’ve gone backwards, not forwards. It pisses me off. There should be no excuses whatsoever to not provide queer representation today when they were severely censored to do so 30 years ago and there were still very brave and amazing people trying to provide regardless.
I will see where the 2nd party of Season 2 Wednesday will go but I’m not hopeful. Netflix are set in their ways.
