There is gentle classical music playing in the background, as it so often is in Hannibal’s home. A pleasant ambient noise to help him concentrate on whatever it is that he is doing, a way to keep his many different thought tracks organised and in tune with each other. Tonight though the music proves to be of a different purpose, when Hannibal gently pulls Alana close until she can press the side of her face against his chest, fingers carefully crading through her beautiful brown locks while his second hand settles on her waist. Leaning his head down he brushes his nose along the top of her head, before placing a kiss there. Something is obviously on the woman’s mind but he won’t push her to talk about it, there is after all always the chance that she simply can’t talk about it because of doctor-patient confidentiality. Hannibal knows Alana to be the kind of person to speak when ready to do so. Until then he is content to offer his presence as solace. After a few more moment of silence between them, only filled by the music, Hannibal hums softly and begins to move them to the rhythm. Small steps back and in a tight circle, swaying both of their bodies while always keeping their bodies close together in his embrace. Their movements are far from the traditional dances Hannibal has been taught and enjoys indulging in when invited to a gala or party with the proper space available. But this very moment is not about grooming social connections in the higher circles of society and Hannibal could not care less about his posture or placing his feet correctly. In this moment he can simply be and enjoy the presence of his lover, offering strenght and support.

Hannibal had always been a proud man, knowing that the grip on his self-control has been strong and steady, unwavering no matter the situation he finds himself in. That is until he meets Will Graham. From the moment that he had met the younger man in Jack Crawford’s office, he has been fascinated. A person with such pure empathy, able to assume any point of view may be seen as something delicate, or fragile, by most people but for Hannibal it had been like spotting a rare, almost extinct, animal in the wild. And he could not keep himself away from the man, ingrained himself into his life, pulled the strings under the cover of offering help. But in his pride, Hannibal had not seen the beginning of cracks in his own foundation, the cunning way in which Will had effectively found his way into his mind, into his palace - the very base of his thoughts, his emotions and memories - building his own rooms and filling them with himself. In the end, Hannibal realises with a smile on his lips, that pride had indeed come before the fall. Thought in his case it had quite literally been a fall. His gaze drops to the man lying on the bed with him, Hannibal himself propped up against the headboard slightly. His breathing is slow but even, his heartbeat steady and the bandages covering Will’s wounds finally didn’t drench in blood after only a few hours. Compared to Will he had come out of the fight with the Red Dragon with less wounds but the bullet wound to his abdomen would have been lethal. Would. If not for his self-control and obsessive determination to see Will and himself finally together like he had always wanted. His body aches, the stitches in his skin itching and nerve endings burning with pain that the painkillers are only able to mildly dull to a low flickering flame. He does not remember when he has last slept, too focused on keeping the both of them alive, stabilising them both and getting them to relative safety for now. The lack of sleep comes crashing into Hannibal like a dark wave, when he finds himself with nothing to do, no bandages to be changed, no medicine to administer and he glances over at Will lying on his back next to him once again. Carefully he moves his body down on the bed, mindful of his torn abdomen but unable to keep the grunt and hiss of pain from slipping past his lips when his body protests against the movement. Finally he manages to lay flat on the bed and slowly rolls to his right side, against Will’s left arm, the man still and unmoving. Panic grips Hannibal’s heart in an icy embrace and he forces his body to move again, pushing himself closer to the man’s body until he is able to lay his head on Will’s chest over where his heart beats. Still steady - still alive. It is only then, with the sound of Will’s heartbeat, that Hannibal finally allows the darkness to pull him under, for sleep to claim him.

Art had always been one of Hannibal’s major interests. During his first studies in France his interest had been focused on purely anatomical sketches, but soon he had discovered a certain talent for it and more often than not he found himself in a park, studying faces and sketching. His interest had spiked as he found himself in beautiful Florence, a city so rich of art and history, the works of Botticelli on display. It had inspired Hannibal to move to the study of the living human body, trying to capture the tender curves of skin.
Over the years he continued to sketch, a great pastime and hobby after a particularly boring day with patients. After dinner Hannibal would simply sit in his study, a piece of classical music softly playing in the background, a glass of fine wine or port by his side and a sketchbook in front of him. There was never a lack of muses in his mind, but he had found himself without much inspiration recently.

With a delighted smile on his lips, Hannibal moves to take his jacket off the back of the chair he had put it and shrugging it on, picking up his bag next before gesturing for Will to exit before him. “Your clothes are clean and so are you, I don’t see why your appearance should matter when you are there as a patron”, Hannibal speaks once they find themselves on the way out of the university building. Of course Hannibal knows the places he frequents have a certain dress code in place, but he is a regular patron in the restaurant he has in mind for them and he is sure nobody dare turn him away should they find offense in Will’s state of dress. They walk side by side in silence for a few moments, Hannibal pulling up the collar of his coat, trying to trap the heat of his body so he wouldn’t get cold too quickly. He has never found silence to be a problem, preferring it over the constant chatter of people who are filling every moment with idle chatter. Though Hannibal out of his periphery he notices Will glancing at him, which he returns with a gentle smile. Even though the younger man wasn’t speaking out loud with his mouth, his eyes seem to be doing the talking.
Hannibal hums gently, nodding when Will finally breaks the silence. “I have never attended an art school or taken any classes, no. And I do not make a living of the arts either. It is purely for my own enjoyment that I sketch so one may call me a ‘hobbyist’. Though don’t let anyone hear you say that in the art department of the university, Will. If I followed their wills I would be teaching and selling my art work”, he explains, his voice open and honest and a small chuckle following his last sentence, glancing to Will walking at his side.
“If you wish to see my work, I am more than happy to show you the sketches I have drawn of you today. Though I would also understand why you may not want to, rest assured that the decision if yours.”
The continue on for a few more minutes, silence stretching out between them once again and the restaurant is not far from them when Will speaks again and Hannibal chuckles at the phrasing. “Per definition of the word ‘talent’, it is not something a person can pick up but is instead a natural ability to be good at something, especially without being taught. Though I would argue that anyone can be taught to draw, if the person is willing to learn.”
Hannibal briefly wonders if the young man had chosen his words deliberately like that or if it was simply the word he had picked to describe his lacking skill. The more time he spends with Will, the more fascinating the man becomes. As if the man himself is a flower just beginning to bloom, his petals slowly unfurling and revealing more and more of his beauty.
Once they reach the front of the restaurant Hannibal feels the hesitation in Will’s body and he turns his head towards him, smiling gently before putting his free hand on the man’s back between his shoulder blades and pushing him forward and along. Immediately they are greeted with warm air, the gentle sound of classical music playing in the background and the quiet murmuring of the different patrons already seated.
Hannibal replies to the waiter greeting them a few steps into the restaurant, telling him they would like a table for two and if possible, in a quiet corner. The man nods and assures him that his usual table is free and he gestures them to follow after picking up two menus. With a brief glance towards Will, Hannibal lets his hand fall from the young man’s back and follows.
Once they are seated, their coats and Hannibal’s bag taken to a coat rack nearby though not before he quickly pulls his sketchbook free and placing it on the table, they are left by themselves to decide on their beverage and meal for the evening.
Hannibal hums softly when he sees that his favourite wine is recommended for the main course of the menu of the day. With his decision quickly made he closes the menu and sets it down on the table in front of him and Hannibal instead finds himself studying the man sitting across from him. The man’s fingers are tense around the menu, his shoulders pulled up and jaw clenched, and it makes Hannibal smile gently, for it seems like such an endearing sight. “Please do not concern yourself with the prices of the food served here, Will. Simply pick whatever appeals to you and rest assured that I will cover it. You are here per my invitation and it doesn’t require a degree is psychology for me to see that this is not the kind of environment you find yourself in often.”
He speaks without judgment, for there simply is none and Hannibal sincerely wishes for Will to enjoy this evening and be at ease, without having to worry about the price on the tab by the end of it. “If you do not feel comfortable accepting it as such, see it as an apology from me for my lack of manners in my approach of you. I did not choose my words well and realise the kind of implications one might read into my offer.”

He had to be mad. How he’d ever let anyone talk him into this little endeavour, he wasn’t entirely sure. It wasn’t as if Anthony had strong armed him into it. A chance meeting, a casual, if uncomfortable, conversation had finally concluded with a recommendation. He’d barely been out of the academy for five minutes and already he’d known that life wasn’t for him - not exactly, at any rate. There was figuring out the complexities of a crime scene through the intricate web of thought processes and potential motives, and there was standing in the centre of the chaos, blood still drying on the walls, and having to deal with it. That realization had come one traumatic time too late, but while he figured out what it was he wanted to do with his life, as he made the transition, Will Graham found himself at something of a loose end, and those bills wouldn’t pay themselves.

Hannibal’s smile is genuine and bright with joy when the young man confirms his name and accepts his handshake. He lets his hands linger for a moment longer, taking in Will’s calloused fingertips and palms. Obviously art was not the young man’s trade, or it was at least a form of it that required more than holding pencils and brushes.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name.”
He hadn’t offered it, Hannibal’s mind supplies him with the information and his smile now reaches his eyes. What a cunning young man Will turns out to be. “Hannibal”, he offers it, voice gentle. “Doctor Hannibal Lecter, it is a pleasure to meet you Will” Absent-mindedly he notices that the young man isn’t holding his gaze, instead he is looking at a point just slightly above his eyes. Curious.
Hi! When do you believe Hannibal has fallen in love with Will? Also, when do you think he actually realized it?
Hi, Anon! Thanks forthe message. *cracks knuckles* All right, let’s see. How long has Hannibal been in love with Will? I think that in some way, Hannibal has alwaysbeen in love with the idea of someone like Will.
Imagine, you spend most of your life angry, bitter andwanting to see the world burn – but at the same time, you are in love with thebeauty of it all; the taste of certainthings, the scents around you that bring up memories and potential memories, the sound of the piano as a woman’s voice accompanies it. You’re an aesthete but you also hate so muchof the world and the people in it.
And as you grow and become Hannibal, you wonder, you hopethat maybe out there is someone who feels this same level of simultaneous disconnectwith the world as well as the constant drowning in it all. Does this person exist? Surely they must because what good is being CountHannibal Lecter, VIII if there is no one you can turn to wink at as you bothwatch the world burn and this person – this mother effing person — evenhanded you the matches.
So Hannibal was already in love with the idea of thisperson, but time moved on and the chance of him finding them seemed more andmore remote.
So imagine you are living your life, finding happiness inyour drawings, in your wine, in the way the blood slowly drains from yourpiggish victims and you decide to be content. This is enough. It’snot what you had hoped for, but you are having a grand old time. Then Jack Crawford shows up in your office, and tells you about this man he wants you to check out. He’s brilliant, he feels things too deeply, he can tell whatothers are feeling, but he really doesn’t want anything to do with anyone.
Sure, you can check him out. Why not? Anything to make life alittle more interesting and colorful. You are having a grand old time afterall. A little bit of cat and mouse should be entertaining.
And you’re in Jack’s office talking about taste – or lackthereof—and you sit and really look at the face before you. And you can see his disdain for people andniceties (the world isn’t nice, after all, not really.) and he just doesn’tgive a fuck what you think. And his eyesare really blue, and the stodgy uniform he presents to the world does nothingto hide how beautiful he actually is. And good god, you want to consume him. You want him to consume you and spend day after day together. Is he worthy? You think he might be? How can you find out? What is this you are feeling? Good god.
So time passes and you are still consumed with thoughts ofWill Graham, but don’t really understand it all. What is this you are actually feeling? Part of you hates yourself for it, part ofyou hates him for it, but with each dry quip, each sardonic exchange, every “DoctorLecter” he hurls your way just throws your mind into a maelstrom. But you love it. You adore it.
And when you send Tobias Budge after him – or is it he afterTobias Budge – you know that this will decide whether or not he is worthy. (Or in the deepest recesses of your mind, whether you are worthy. But you justignore that for a bit…)
When you hear that Tobias say he murdered some FBI agents, iswhen you know. The rage, the rage youhave not felt since her, since you murdered the ones that murdered her, THATrage is back.
And when Will walks in, and your heart stops – or does itstart again? – that you realize that you, Count Hannibal Lecter, VIII, M.D. are inlove with Will Graham. And it’s messyand complicated as shit, and did you sign up for this? Yes. No. Who knows.
So, to answer your question, Anon, when did Hannibal realizehe was in love with Will? Always andnever and always. But he definitelyknows that he’s fucked and he’s having the time of his life.
Wow, what a beautiful and well-thought out answer! You articulated everything I often thought of but never put in words. Hannibal is pretty complicated, it was usually hard to know for sure what’s going on in his mind. I think you’re right, he probably more or less realized it after Tobias, though the actual feelings came much earlier. Thank you, it’s an amazing glimpse into Hannibal’s past/present/future.
