when i first watched it i actually stopped halfway through because i felt it was WAY too similar in tone and story to the original losers club. group of misfit kids start getting tortured by pennywise > bond into a rag-tag group > have a big fight and break up > come back together to defeat pennywise for the good of their friends / town. i know it's silly to call a show with no new source material 'derivative' but it really did feel to me that andy was desperately trying to recapture the magic of the losers club all while shoving as many losers club references into the show as possible and then flagrantly pointing at it like see guys??? remember the original???
however i did eventually finish it, and there were a lot of things i really enjoyed about the show along with things that really bothered me.
as much as i just said the dynamic of the kids was very derivative of the losers club, i did feel the characters themselves and their relationships with one another were very unique and charming in their own ways and brought a lot to the narrative both individually and through their relationships with the other characters!! of course the marge / rich storyline was an absolute favourite, and i actually really respected the show for killing him off, especially in the midst of stranger things dominating pop culture with their constant character death edging and then never actually having the balls to kill off anyone meaningful or important. it really broke my heart to see him die in such a noble way and made the finale so much more impactful!!!
furthermore, i really REALLY enjoyed the ENTIRE blackspot storyline. i loved how they start sewing the seeds from the very beginning of the series, and even though fans of the book / movies know exactly what's coming, it STILL hits incredibly hard and is an absolutely heartbreaking scene to watch, as it should be!!! the entire scene of the blackspot burning down was so intense and scary, i really enjoyed the whole thing. and i love love LOVED pennywise's involvement in the entire thing - it really did make his character feel like the overarching evil that has infected the town and it's people, and that he was truly feeding on the hatred and the fear in that moment. just perfectly executed and a really well-written plot point imo!!!
speaking of pennywise, something i VERY thoroughly enjoyed about this series was how SCARY pennywise is. in it ch2 i felt they really fell short with this, especially with the infamous bullying pennywise to death scene, it made pennywise's presence lose a lot of it's threat and scariness. i think the fact that this show is able to lean into the gore makes him a much more threatening presence, but i also really enjoyed delving into his history, rob gray and the original pennywise specifically, delving into dick halloran and the shine, and getting to see pennywise sleeping in the people-goop was one of my favourite shots in the whole show. just so creepy and awesome!! as much as the losers are the star of it ch1/ch2, i really felt they let pennywise be the star of this series, which is important if it's going to have multiple seasons with a rotating cast!
i really enjoyed the finale, but it almost made me angry with how BADLY ROBBED we were for it ch2. the mix of the supernatural lore and rituals, with the addition of being defeated through friendship and camaraderie, while also showing how the town of derry itself falls victim to these calamities just like it does in the final moments of the book, i felt it really was the perfect middle-ground between the cocaine-fueled inter-dimensional turtle-fuckery of the books and just. bullying the fucking clown to death. andy you had this in you the whole time and you just shafted us????? when i get my hands on you muschietti it's on sight.
the military storyline... ho boy. not only was the adult storyline just overall sort of boring, the REVEAL that the reason the military is hunting pennywise is so that they can... unleash him on the US??? so everyone in america will be too afraid???? too distracted by evil scary pennywise to Do feminism or the civil rights movement??? are we fucking serious y'all. my jaw genuinely hit the floor i could not fucking BELIEEEEVE that was their motive. and then pennywise just IMMEDIATELY eats him. like what the fuck did they think was going to happen??? he was just gonna cooperate??? fuck that plot line pissed me off so bad. genuinely what the fuck are you TALKING ABOOOUT.
something else a friend of mine pointed out is that the entire finale presents quite an insane plot hole in the entire cinematic canon. we see a teacher get decapitated, and then a whole assload of students get hiked out to the middle of a frozen lake, which has frozen over in the middle of summer mind you. so all of that happens, and it just gets completely forgotten by the time ben (/ mike in book canon) is doing his research in ch1? and what actually gets remembered is the black spot? which makes less sense since it all happened during a time where black people and their lives basically didn't matter at all to white society, which would have been who was writing the history and newspapers at the time. it's strange to think they'd report the blackspot so much more than all of this strange paranormal unexplainable shit? and of course there's the 'pennywise made everyone forget' argument, but this was a town-wide phenomena?? and they still remembered the black spot?? dunno. just didn't feel very well thought-out to me and presented more questions than it answered.
overall there were things that i loved and things i didn't like at all, but i'm really interested to see what they do with the next season!! i've also only watched the first season through once so i'd be more than happy to give it a rewatch if you think i've missed anything that really makes the series special!!! i definitely didn't talk enough about how much i adored the characters, ronnie and lily were definitely faves along with marge and rich, so i'd love to rewatch for them alone. i'll probably rewatch before the new season comes out anyway!!
as much as I am an enjoyer of the “unsettling 80s town” aesthetic in film/tv/in general despite the fact that it’s over-used as fuck nowadays, a tinyyyyyy part of me does wish that the movies were set in the 50s/80s like the novel and miniseries…. I can’t even explain why 😭
i do think the cultural phenomena that is Stranger Things has definitely set the ~mysterious 80s town~ trope into overdrive over the last 10 years; i do enjoy IT being set in 80s/modern day, i understand why they did it as it does make it more relatable for today's audiences, but i would have loved a proper 50s/80s adaptation!!! i think it could have been very charming in its own way to really cement it in that time!! one of the many reasons i love the 90s adaptation too and something that sets it aside from the new adaptation, makes it worth the watch for that alone!
when I read through the book I typically imagine the 90s kids cast but when I read fic it’s always the movie kids cast but it’s always the 2019 adults when either medium is focused on the 27 years after…. sometimes my minds eye decides to get creative and mashes them together or creates a new face but I’ll tell you one thing for sure and it’s that I never turn to their book canon depictions lmao 😭 I REBUKE balding eddie… am I crazy…..
yes i do the same !! i find the 90s movie is slightly more faithful to the book and therefore i often end up picturing their cast when reading the book, especially adult eddie since his character has such a stark tonal shift between the two adaptations! my brain Also morphs the adult '19 cast into younger versions of the losers when i read fics, and i think that's mostly due to the fact that most fics describe the losers as these versions of themselves lol. i've read many fics before that keep bill's ginger hair or ponytail though hehehe
there are things i love from every adaptation that make the characters so unique in my eyes; i love beverly's short hair, ben's wolf shirts, mike's height and stan's tight curls in the '17-'19 movies, i love eddie's blonde hair and glasses, richie's stache and bill's ponytail in the '90s movie, and i love bill's ginger hair and glasses and eddie's pinky ring and gucci loafers in the books!! i know this is slightly hilarious but i actually LOVE balding losers club. they're 40! they'd be balding! my favourite balders are richie and bill, but my darling love goes out to balding eddie.

but yes, usually when reading / writing fics it's the '19 cast for me!!! and when it comes to the books it's usually an amalgamation of the '90s cast and my favourite parts of the '17-'19 cast!! and some internal creative liberties so bill denbrough always has a ponytail
