Hi! So I’m doing Godspell at my community theatre as a female Lamar— only got casted recently so I haven’t been able to research much, but perhaps do you have some sort of good photo of Lamar’s makeup/facepaint? I’ve been going down the rabbit hole that is Google searches and it’s just confusing me more 😔
The version we are doing I think is akin to the original off broadway version, if that changes anything. Getting desperate bc I can barely find anything on the character 😭
Heya! I wish I could help! I don't think I have anything specifically about Lamar's makeup in any of my stuff (here or otherwise), sadly.
The only other peeps I would have recommended might know are @mgmpluto or @patchesandfacepaint - I'm not sure if either of them are active anymore, but you could maybe check their archives?
I think PatchesandFacepaint also runs the Godspell Facebook page, too. Might be able to ask there if you use it!
I hope you find what you're looking for! 🤞🏻
Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell coming out around the same time and telling the same basic story is so funny to me because in JCS Jesus is this tortured and tired soul trying to come to terms with his inevitable fate and then in most of Godspell Jesus is like
"We are all fools for Christ" (1 Corinthians 4:10)

aaaand here are all the colored/non-gooped versions of the art from my previous post
a quick katie sketch :]
OMG
THE SONG THAT JESUS AND THE DISCIPLES PLAY WITH JUNKYARD INSTRUMENTS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MOVIE
ITS LEARN YOUR LESSONS WELL
IVE WONDERED WHY NOBODY EVER SINGS IT IN THE MOVIE
THIS IS WHY
ITS GENIUS
They also do a piano version during The Prodigal Son 🎹 Along with some melodic motifs from We Beseech Thee!

a lot of people write off Godspell as "that one musical where jesus is a clown" but as a patently Not Religious person, Godspell is so facinating to me.
The clown aesthetic was the main draw for me at first, but EVERY SINGLE SONG is a banger, lets just get that out of the way. (spoilers for godspell but like, its the bible, its a bit late for spoilers)
what really makes Godspell hit so hard for me is the fact that it somehow manages to be an amazing representation of the "ideal" chirstian experience (in my opion) while also not being about god AT ALL in the weirdest way.
Rather than an all knowing, reserved christ-figure, jesus is literally just some guy! the group certainly follow him like disciples and listen to his teachings, but he also fools around with them and encourages them to take the lead when they tell stories. clown jesus in godspell is to my knowledge the most kind, forgiving, and approachable depiction of christ in recent fiction.
but like i said, Godspell is barely about god. Sure, the characters act out bible stories and recount lessons from the bible, but the jesus in godspell is not a literal representation of jesus. In name and in spirt, sure, but he is also LITERALLY JUST A CLOWN. He does slight of hand magic, the crucifixion is him being loosely ties to a chain link fence, and even judas/john the baptist (who are the same person in this show) does not actually portray jesus, he only RECOUNTS the passage in which it happens. it's so difficult to explain but I cannot overstate how, in Godspell, that guy is just not jesus christ?
i think that must have been part of the controversy with godspell when it came out because, if you're a hardcore christian, you may find some offense in this portrayal because it is a purposefully childish abstraction of the story.
that all being said, though, that is also why i am so in love with Godspell. instead of being a hardcore deep dive into religion, godspell can be whatever you wnat it to be. personally, i think it's more a story about building community. A group of people gather around a cause to find some purpose in their lives and, even when what they initially gathered around isn't necessarily there anymore, they have still found some purpose and joy in it.
I'm just collecting Judases at this point
David Edward Byrd appreciation post (April 4, 1941 - February 3, 2025)
Jesus christ superstar and Godspell are so damn radicalizing in the best way. One uses the anger and the chaos, the other uses the softest touch of love. You need both. You need balance. One cannot be without the other. Feel enough anger to fight and love hard enough to find what's worth the fight.

I've recently made a friend who is Swedish and I am absolutely jazzed to remember I have the Swedish cast recording so maybe I can listen to it with her and we can chat about it :3
