He’s watching for something unspecified, an indicator of sorts that would finally tell him that this is something he shouldn’t be doing as if he didn’t know it already and needed reinforcement, a backbone, a second opinion. Naturally the sounds draw in his attention, little flickers of interest and skepticism as pupils flit from one thing to another and back. He doesn’t like that there are so many aspects of this demon that are ambiguous all of the time and so when Chanyeol subtly asks for him to sit down he hesitates at first but ultimately does so, weighing all of the possible outcomes again and again, the same ones every single time they meet. That’s not to say they plan these incidents of crossing since he could only name a few moments in their history where it was in absolute black and white. Even now there’s a faint voice in the back of his head that he’s sure to be his guilt, attempting to speak over all other sentiment, saying this was not his original plan. From the blazer resting in Chanyeol’s lap, under the pressure of his decorated fingers, Kris can only assume that he was under similar circumstances. “Not you.” A quiet denial as he carefully pinches the hem of the other’s sleeve and attempts to redirect the arm to join its counterpart. “You also wouldn’t dare bite me if you favor those ridiculously large teeth of yours,” he adds, tone flat but the humor slips small hooks over the corners of his lips and pulls tight.

There’s a beat of silence that he welcomes selfishly because he doesn’t know where to start a conversation, hand raising to wrap lazily around the front of his jaw before sliding back down. He leans forward, eyes on his hands when he speaks again. Gentle, a little condescending but what’s new. “Why is it that we’ve crossed paths far more in this generation than the others where I see you once, maybe twice in passing? It must be for some unfortunate reason that our steps are overlapping enough to call what we’re doing right now a ritual.” No contact is spared with his inquiry, possibly because he doesn’t wan’t to perceive an answer prematurely nor does he want to know what it looks like when Chanyeol realizes that he’s said the wrong words because they’ll always be the wrong ones to use and Kris has a string of pity that sings inside of his chest when he thinks about it, how helpless they are to circumstance. The irony leaves a metallic taste on the flat of his tongue. A grimace follows. “If we do not discuss this we’ll be enemies, more than we are now. You know this, Chanyeol.” Finally his head turns, eyes landing on the mouth that often finds a way to ridicule him with a simple smile. He looks to find out if there’s a frown that mirrors his own. He looks to see if Chanyeol knows just exactly what he means.

A memory hangs like raindrops on spiderwebs, like a beautiful and delicate thing between them and it glimmers with just the right amount of risk; there are fields of wild daisies and buffalo grass and the crickets compose a lulled symphony that introduces them on some level of formality, not just sideways glances. He sits in a dent of greenery where the demon has carved out a place for himself. They didn’t need the complications that came with conversation then because they both knew exactly what they were trying to say. The stars danced back and forth across the sky before them.

For a moment it felt as though they were not restricted by the chains of their loyalty.

For a moment, Kris had fooled himself into thinking they would be okay like this.

Chanyeol allows for the outlying force to move his arm until both hands stacked on top of each other in his lap. The curvature of one palm forms as it cups over the opposite hand. He recalls it all. The run ins on the street, exchanged glances across busy galleries, and impromptu talks under a night’s shroud so dark that the stars gleamed brightly against it but not bright enough to illuminate upon Chanyeol’s signature habit of folding his hands in his lap. To say that Kris knowingly did what he did would be giving him too much credit. It’d be giving whatever flimsy connection that lives between them too much thought. Things find its way to its rightful place through unforeseeable and inexplicable manners. Sometimes it’s just enough to accept that the force that push and pull things and people together and apart exist without understanding it. But it isn’t enough for Kris. Herein lies the difference of their kinds. Chanyeol scoffs and sneers purely for display but he isn’t surprised. Those made of light stand for reason and order. Admitting that there are just some things that resides outside of that control and law of order must be an unimaginable concept for them. He can’t imagine how the alarms inside Kris’ head must be blaring just from sharing the same space as someone like him, someone who embodies everything that opposes reason and order.

“You think far too much, my friend. Has anybody told you that?” An eyebrow arches over dead eyes with stares that echo the flatness in his tone. Nobody who’s actually seen an angel ever came back into Hell to pass on their story of triumph. Stories of defeat and failure were just alerted by news of promotion for the next in line. Yet tales and speculations of angels slithered through the void, causing the youngest and gullible of demons to constantly check over their shoulders for the sight of feathers floating in the air. A discussion isn’t required to prevent something that is already set in their nature. “I actually don’t know.” He manages to find the humor within the irony of their situation. His wide set shoulders bounce as he releases breathy laughs. “You know...” He exhales away the last amused puff of air from his lungs. “The humans have this really interesting concept they believe in-- Most of them, anyway. The non-jaded ones. They call it fate. The belief that everything will inevitably come to be as they are. Sometimes things just fall into the right place at the right time.”

In an effortless glide, his eyes falls upon Kris. His look sets out a dare for Kris to disagree, as he knows that Kris will; precedents won’t fail him now. “What do you fear, Kris? What prophecy do you see lying ahead in our horizon?” He considers himself spoiled with how easily answers ( whole answers, sincere answers ) come to him with just a sweet edge to his voice that persuades hidden thoughts and desires to surface. The same ability loses its effectiveness with creatures like himself and Kris though. Taking his answer at face value will indicate a level of intimacy that allows him to trust Kris to tell him the truth. Angels have no reason to lie but they have no reason to trust a demon either.

“Mr. Chan is waiting for you in the conference room, Sir.”

“What?” Seungcheol felt that all too familiar flare of anger grow in his chest, the flames of rage licking at his lungs and tumbling out of his mouth in that one whisper. He flinched at the look of fear in his secretary’s eyes, stomping down the fire quickly before relaxing his shoulders, though the obvious clench in his jaw and grit in his teeth proved a worthy representation of his displeasure. He pinched the bridge of his nose before taking a deep breath and averting his attentions back to his secretary, eyes wide in surprise.

“I didn’t set up a meeting with Mr. Chan.” Seungcheol informed her, voice unwavering as he challenged her silently to contradict him. The woman scrambled for an explanation. He said it was important… He said he had news… He said he needed to see you…

None were good enough.

“Enough.” Seungcheol raised a hand before running it through his hair in aggravation. “Leave before I change my mind.” He turned his back to his secretary before making his way to the conference room, shoulders straight and lips curled against his teeth in an irritated growl.

He stood in front of the frosted doors for a moment before pushing in, face contorted in a grimace, only to stop at the sight of a familiar face.

And not the familiar, round, ugly face of the expected Mr. Chan. No, instead of the mongrel he had been expecting, he was greeted by another. A mongrel nonetheless, but someone much more pleasing to see in comparison to the fat parasite that was Mr. Chan.

It did nothing to smother his anger, though.

“You little shit.” He closed the doors behind him before turning back to the face his guest. “I should’ve known it was you. Should’ve fucking known.” He threw his hands up in exasperation before narrowing his eyes at the demon before him.

“What are you doing here?”

Chanyeol’s laughter sputtered out with a mist of spit landing down the table. He quickly wiped his lips with the back of one hand while the other arm sleeve wiped at the table top. That reaction was well worth the effort. ( As always. As always. ) It would’ve been even better if he could see Seungcheol’s initial reaction, but he was neither a beggar nor a chooser so he felt pretty satisfied with that glimpse of anger.

“Is that really any way to greet me?” He swiveled around in his chair with his hands clasped together and a fake contemplative expression on. His bottom lip protruded out just slightly. “You sound so disappointed. I could change my appearance to look more like Mr. Chan if Mr. Chanyeol isn’t doing it for you.” He didn’t mean to be funny ( just antagonizing ) but he laughed at himself anyway.

“I don’t blame you for not knowing it was me. Your surprise is half the fun.” Poking fun at Seungcheol continued to be a favorite past time. Everything changed with time yet their kind never did. Year after year after decades, everything about them remained static in a universe full of dynamics. As the world continued to produce things to consume and obtain, Chanyeol never found a hiccup in his drive to live through every mundane day after the next. He couldn’t say he knew what fueled the other demons’ will to live but he knew he couldn’t have them die off on his watch.

The humor drained away from his eyes. “You should get a better security system around here. You never know who might be snooping and trying to infiltrate. Do you get what I’m trying to say here, old friend?”

One target on his own back and one on Seungcheol’s meant two out of seven had been marked by one hunter already. They needed to regain the upper advantage. And as Seungcheol probably learned from Chanyeol’s prank... The element of surprise was a worthy ally to have on one’s side.

He would never admit it out loud, but it was a pretty clever idea setting up shop doling out bad advice to those desperate to receive it. Sehun fought the urge to wrinkle his nose as long legs quickly carried him to the room number given to him by the secretary in the lobby; it was truly baffling to him that humans could be in such close proximity to a demon without noticing a thing when he could smell its unique filth from down the hall.

When the angel entered the room more than a few pairs of eyes landed on him obviously not used to having visitors, but none seemed to be the ones he was looking for. “Excuse me,” he quietly called catching the attention of a nearby woman. “Could you point me in the direction of Chanyeol? I’m here to surprise him.” The sweet smile on his face practically radiated with the sincerity of a friend unexpectedly popping in and gave no indication that he was actually on his way to meet something he despised. She offered him a warm smile of her own pointing down the row of cubicles to their right hardly waiting for him to turn around before no doubt alerting her friends of whatever information she thought she had intercepted.

“This place is much nicer than I imagined, but their employee screening process could probably use some work,” Sehun mused leaning down to rest his elbows on the glass and prop his head up with his fist. “So, Chanyeol, how has the day been treating you? Taken any fun calls?” His voice was low, but he knew the demon could hear him loud and clear. “Ruin any lives?”

The day buzzed with a certain anticipation that Chanyeol couldn’t place his finger on for the first several calls he worked through.

“Of course, you can tell me about that. You can you use this time however you want. My attention is all yours.”

He remembered the way his throat clenched as he forced the lie out into the receiver of the phone. At the first sign of turbulence he couldn’t give any sign of distress. Be it an iceberg waiting for him in the distance, he tried to hold his composure even if he could sense the divine grace closing in. It still reeked like anesthesia in a hospital even if he came into contact with it often. The approach came much too slowly and too obvious for any internal alarms to start blaring.

The call ended rather quickly due to insufficient credit on the caller’s end, leaving him with nothing to distract him from his dying curiosity. He had no idea how to compose himself for this unexpected visitation. The feeling felt so familiar yet not. In midst of pushing the sleeves of his plaid flannel up to his elbows, he saw his guest make their entrance. The angel was indeed his guest. There was no doubt about who the angel came here for as he made his way directly to Chanyeol’s desk.

If first impressions spoke volumes about a person, Chanyeol wondered what the other thought of him as he started chuckling in response. “My, my...” The seat of his chair twisted from side to side, following the motion of his head tilting left and right while his eyes drank up the sights of the stranger. “How long have I lingered in your imagination since you know so much about me already?”

It sat uneasily in him being at such a disadvantage but his smile stayed unshaken. “Which one are you?” With both Chastity and Humility crossed off the list, the possibilities were still too many for him to take an educated guess. Though his eyes still gleamed with hope, “Charity?” He could almost get on his knees and pray for the answer to be yes. Having his counterpart be this fun would incite some excitement in his life.

“Before you know it there’s rubble and dust, Cause we be fuckin’ it up, somebody say; ‘you better run’” All he could feel was his heart thudding hard into his chest, the sound of his own blood being pumped around his body seemed to follow. The gym seemed to be his home as of late; if he wasn’t working - he was studying, if he wasn’t studying - he was in the gym. His life didn’t seem to have a ‘pause’ button like other people’s did, at least not at the moment. His main priority was getting himself into shape (even though he didn’t really need to). The worst thing was he’d only been working out for ten minutes, meaning that he’d probably pushed himself too hard from the get go. “Aish,” he hissed to himself, standing up straight to try and regain an ordinary posture as well as his breath, “I… I possibly over did that one,” he murmured, looking across at Chanyeol. The gym was the last place Jimin would expect to have met a new friend, usually everyone kept to themselves and did their own thing, unless you were already with someone who went it was rare to speak to another soul in there, yet for Jimin, it happened some how. They’d not known each other for long but it was a long enough period for them to want to work out together every now and again. “Did I bring my water with me?” he asks softly, his cheeks pink already - he was working too hard. Far too hard. Once he found the water his hand wrapped around the bottle and brought the tip to his mouth, allowing himself a generous swig to try and keep himself hydrated. “Okay, I’m good. What did you want to work on today? I wanted to do a leg day but, I don’t mind switching it up, my legs are still aching from the class I taught yesterday…”

Chanyeol should’ve been his spotter, but he was a strong believer in giving help when it is asked for. Since a request was never made, he stuck to warming up by himself. The whirring of the treadmill and the pounding of his footsteps and heart syncopated together. He kept watching Jimin go from zero to sixty without buckling up. Moments like these begged for an answer to a very simple question: What is Jimin working so hard for? Something had to compel the boy to condensing a full warm up into ten minutes. Chanyeol hardly broke out in sweat over his run before turning the machine off so he could stand beside Jimin. The towel he tossed over his left shoulder remained as dry as the rest of him.

He laughed softly. “You could’ve taken a break from working out if you’re still sore,” he answered with a bright tone, the kind that earns you friends. ( The kind that breaks down barriers. ) The maintenance of Jimin’s overall health could’ve been easily covered by all the dance he does in his studio. Logically there wasn’t a real need to hit the gym like this. It only served to raise other questions in Chanyeol’s head.

“Your legs are sore and yet you still want to do leg day though?” His eyebrows pushed upward and the ridges along his forehead formed. His head tilted at an angle, inquisitively regarding his gym partner. “How far are you willing to push yourself?” A playful grin appeared but was short lived since he went to take a few deep gulps from his own water bottle.
