In which Kaela takes Mal to the market and somethin’ special catches her eye. uwu

For those of you who don’t know, these characters are a part of the main cast of my original project Feathers and Flowers! If you’d like to know more, extra info and links to lore, art, and everything in between will be below! :3

So with that said! This little short comic-thing to serve many purposes: one was to test out how, exactly would I render stuff like crowds and BGs that are man-made and stuff. I’ve plans to do more short comics to tell stories and I wanna get a style down before I fling myself into it! The second is mostly because I thought it’d be fun and cute. uwu

This was a challenge, not gonna lie! I have such a hard time with perspective and cityscapes sometimes but despite that I wanna get better, and this was a very fun step outta the comfort zone.

So! Some quick fun-facts I’d like to share with ya’ll!

-Mal can speak, but she primarily speaks her native language, one that humans have a bit of a hard time understanding. Mal in contrast can understand human language just fine, but she has yet to fully grasp speaking it outside of a few words. This is partly why she communicates mostly through expression and body language; the other is because it’s simply in her character to be reserved.

-A lot of Mal’s body language can be gleaned from watching her wings. As shown here, her wings being open without intent of flight often indicates her curiosity, and when she flutters them it means she’s engaged with what she’s doing or looking at.

-This comic takes place a little after Kaela and Mal meet; quite likely this is the first time they go to the market together!

-People in this world are not oblivious to the existence of Mal’s race. In fact, it’s common knowledge they exist, and it’s sorta-kinda normal to see one walking around. That’s why there’s lack of fearful reactions; that said, seeing a Spirit could be an uncommon occurrence in some areas of the world, this town being one of them!

-The vendor selling the crepes is an established side character, it’s why he’s the only other one with color to him! You’ll see more of him in the future ;3

so the general reaction to seeing Mal is more ‘oh, hey neat’ than anything else? Like, there might not be that many (any?) others resident locally, so it’s An Occasion to see one? also Mal’s blush and puffle is cute af

The very general reaction people will have toward seeing a Spirit in person is often one of awe, curiosity, and sometimes wariness, but it still largely depends on location and just how often Spirits are seen there. A city that have Spirits visiting often might stop and be like “oh hey, that’s cool” but ultimately just go on about their day, whereas a city that rarely gets visits from Spirits might have people stop and outright stare. Fear isn’t a common reaction but it can and does happen. O:

Blue’s Feathers and Wings Compendium: Standard Wing Shapes

I have expanded the traditional 4 types; Highspeed, Elliptical, Low Aspect and High Aspect ratio, because they were very narrow and vague categories for the most part, adding High Energy, Thermal Soaring, Night Glider, and Passerine wings. I feel that these extra types make it easier to understand and visualize the differences and similarities between wing shapes.

I’ve renamed Low Aspect to Powered Soaring, and High Aspect to Dynamic Soaring for the purposes of the fact that names made it hard to understand purpose and were easily confusable.

A lot of these wing types are also affected by tailfeather shape and size, and that will change their agility and energy expenditure as the tail also generates lift.
