Virgil's colours and what they represent:
You know what time it is, I know what time it is, it's time for another sanders sides colour breakdown! We are going to be looking at Virgil's colour scheme and compare and identify how and why the colour purple is so prevalent to him and his character (more specifically the colours purple, black and white). Granted, I had to do a bit more research on this one than normal because purple is a colour that contrasts Virgil's character a lot, as well as this colour holding more value to Virgil than the colours with the other sides, so I'll have to dive deeper than usual for this one.
Purple - This colour seems to be very special to Virgil, this can be shown in him taking a liking to the purple clothing when he first got accepted, him being upset that Thomas wasn't dyeing his hair purple anymore, and the glittery eyeshadow that can be seen on him when excited and jittery, even euphoric. Purple is a colour that represents royalty, status, and wealth for its rarity throughout history. Only nobles were allowed to wear this colour, so it is heavily linked to power and authority. You could make the argument that the colour purple makes Virgil feel more confident, that the colour makes him feel powerful or comfortable in his own skin. It may also represent individuality and joy, as when he has his own colour that isn't just a bleak black hoodie, he feels more part of the group that he so badly wanted to be accepted in. Additionally, purple is known to be the colour of survival, specifically for those who have undergone domestic violence. It can be a symbol of peace, courage, and emotional strength. This isn't to say that Virgil is a victim of domestic violence but throughout the show, I couldn't help but see signs of trauma and his blatant utter hatred towards the dark sides (Janus especially) sticks with me every once in a while. I often wonder if it's due to something that they've been doing to him before things changed (though this is just speculation). The colour purple seems to represent more than royalty or power to Virgil. It's a colour that reminds him that things are better now, that he's his own side and has survived the hardships that he's gone through since he first manifested in Thomas' mind.
Black - This colour (yes colour, not shade) seems to be more prevalent and makes more sense to Virgil during his days before acceptance than after. Black is a very somber colour that absorbs all light, rather than reflecting it, and that's exactly how Thomas and the others viewed Virgil when he was just 'anxiety'. It can represent things like mystery, death, mourning, depression, and uncertainty. All of these can be described for anxiety very well, and even Virgil's character now, although he has become more rational and stable over time. Black also represents maturity and elegance, and Virge is definitely one of the more grounded and logical individuals. Even during his time being the villain, he displayed this broodiness that was almost stand-offish and nonchalant. The black reflects these characteristics well as he looked like someone who only wanted to suck up all of the light while still being closed-off and even level-headed in some cases.
White - This colour is usually used on Virgil as accents, but it's still very much there and makes sense for his character. White obviously is the opposite of black, which is why I find it so fascinating that these two colours appear on Virgil's clothing so often after his acceptance. It is almost as if the light and the dark are working in harmony on his clothing. As stated in my breakdowns before, white is a colour that represents purity and wholesomeness. All of the light sides can be seen wearing this colour as it represents their roles being the lights. It can symbolize things like new beginnings and empowerment, which work perfectly with Virgil's character arc so far. White can also be a very cold, empty colour, and I like to personally think of the white on his clothes as the snow on a winter night. It can be harsh and unpleasant but important and sometimes can even be comforting, just like him.
All in all, these three colours seem to hold significance to Virgil and his character more than it does for the other sides. They can be reflected in his journey through finding a sense of self, overcoming difficulties, and going from wanting a community to having a community that loves and respects him.
- The black and white combo on Virgil's current outfits can also represent his current black and white thinking as he's struggling to find an actual reason for Janus and Remus' contributions and often becomes defensive and angry when they are in the picture.
- Glitter also has its own symbolism. Glitter can represent joy, self-expression, and unapologetic fun. Glitter can be seen on Virgil's makeup when the 'butterflies in the stomach' effect happens to him, and it's his views being clouded by excitement and hope for a better future.
- Though purple can represent fear in some instances, it mostly has very positive attributes to it, and I personally like how it contrasts Virgil's overall function as anxiety. It's relaxing and peaceful while being powerful and luxurious (and even creative and magical).
