"Henry isolated Camilla" statement that's been floating around is so funny, because isolated from whom? Her brother who physically and s*xually abused her, had control and anger issues even before the time we (Richard) realized the abuse had started and was actually the one who had her isolated: "kept her on a tight leash and watched her like a hawk"?
Isolated from whom, her alleged friends? Richard who felt a violent urge to r*pe her because he was jealous that Camilla sought protection from Henry and felt no empathy for her when she revealed her injuries from Charles beating and burning her? Francis, who acknowledged that Charles was much worse to her than he expected and knew how "deep and nasty" it ran but did nothing about it and even made a snide comment about Camilla leading men on?
Why would Camilla want to see any of them?
Has that occurred to us? That Camilla could think for herself and rightfully decided that not only she didn't want to see them, but because it was actually dangerous for her? Because she needed to get away for at least a few days from them? Because Richard and Francis showed little to no empathy for her being abused and almost killed by Charles and would still tattle to him? It's good that Richard and Francis didn't completely abandon Charles, but that doesn't mean Camilla wasn't in danger. Henry put her in a hotel for a reason instead of his home. Because Charles might've did something stupid, like oh, show up with a fucking gun to kill Henry, and Camilla wouldn't be safe there but at the same time she needed Henry to financially and emotionally support her.
one of my favourite parts of the book ofc include richard’s winter but especially the final chapter because we get to see richard and francis’ dynamic on full display. it always felt to me very “scooby doo” whenever they tried to work together to try and pull the group back into functionality.
i haven’t taken any photos of their antics with charle’s feral cat but that too comes under the realm of ‘francis and richard desperately trying to fix things together’ parts of the book.
i find that out of all of the friendships in the class, they balance each other out really well, in a messy ‘bipolar’ way so to speak.
And then the movie called the "Dead Poets Society" involved a dead poet
"dead poets society is yellow" "dead poets society is blue" "dead poets society is brown" dead poets society is blurry, it's really fucking hard to see through all these tears
i like to hope that after neil's death, when todd gets his next desk set for his birthday, all of the dead poets meet up to throw it together, in memory of what once was, and what it always will be.

Not really one for shipping, just not my thing, but having just finished my reread of The Secret History fuuuuuuck I love Richard and Francis' dynamic in the second half of the book they make such a fun duo. I want more adventures of just them doing stuff and avoiding the overbearing sexual tension that follows them everywhere. Hell, throw Charles in there a little too, make it an awkward throuple. But i need more Richard and Francis adventures theyre so fun together
sometimes i think about the implication of 28 year old richard papen sitting down to write his retelling of his time in hampden and imagine a world in which he pulled a daniel molloy and published it
richard making henry coffee as a way of thanks every morning they lived together… henry being accustomed to the taste that he finds he almost misses the shitty coffee when richard moves back into the dorms
After Neil had that big, final argument with his father, and after his mother leaves the room and he’s alone you see him staring off into the distance in what is assumed to be his fathers office. He’s staring directly at the desk drawer where the gun is kept. If you look closely, his face changes. There’s a glimpse of hope. Of relief. A way out. He’s almost smiling as he stares at the place in which he soon would take his own life, his eyes resting on the locked drawer that holds the last decision that he’ll ever make.
