I feel like some people are so quick to hate characters, but in honesty all of the characters in the dead poets society are essential. Take any of them away, and you alter the movie.

Charlie, as vulgar and mean as he is (sometimes), matters to the story. He showcases bravery, and courage. He defies all expectations, because he isn’t scared. He is the only one who can say his true thoughts.

Pitts matters to the story. Even if he barely speaks, he represents how even those who barely speak have more to them. He’s silent a good chunk, but we see his courage and humor on the roof with Meeks or in the deleted scene where he receives detention.

Even Jamie Reid is important. He shows the abuse he received in school, and how the system has failed him. Notice how in the bathroom scene, there’s a hall monitor right outside. But he never says anything. The system has failed him, just like many other students.

No character in the dead poets society is useless. They can do wrong things, or lack lines, but they all serve a purpose.
