happy fourth of july to the philippines ONLY
link to article
hi, filipino here. just want to say that our independence day is june 12, not july 4. july 4 is when the united states government decided that they would recognize our freedom, specifically because it is your independence day and they wanted to cement their cultural hegemony over our country. and because of their influence on our country this was recognized for a time as our independence day. we still commemorate it, but i hope you can understand why we donāt want our independence day to be associated so closely with our former colonizer. it wasnāt even a work holiday for us.
june 12 is the day that we filipinos declared our own independence for ourselves, and that is what we celebrate as independence day
happy june 12 to you
we gotta get back to torrent distribution, i just watched someone eat eight grand in bandwidth charges because they ran a direct-download piracy site with local file hosting through cloudflare. torrents were invented literally for this exact reason
torrents work like this
i have a file or folder on my pc that i want to share with other people. let's call it gayshit.mp3
unfortunately gayshit.mp3 is 750mb and im not paying for discord nitro so i need another way to send it
i put it into qbittorrent and it makes a torrent file. this is essentially a very small file that points to gayshit.mp3 so other computers can find it. kinda like a treasure map
i send this tiny file to my friend, who loads it into qbittorrent. their computer takes a moment to find mine over the vast expanse of cyberspace and then (as long as my pc is running and the file is still where it should be), it gets copied from my hard drive to theirs
this is the cool part: if somebody else loads that tiny file, they can download it from both of us. if i'm offline but my friend is on, the third person can still get it. this also means that if two people have separate halves of the file, they can download the other half from each other. as long as some combination of people have the pieces between them, they can all have the whole thing.
crucially this does not require a server!!! you can just upload the file to a few people and as long as they keep it, it's still accessible. as long as somebody, somewhere is still connected, it's available forever. the only way it goes away is if everybody disconnects from it.
please learn to torrent

always use qbittorrent, do not use bittorrent or utorrent.

Worldcat is my bestie and my one true love!! Not only does it tell you what library a book is at, but it also price compares different used book sites against each other for easy view! It's how I got Tarot For the Master for $10!!
Oh, and since I have your attention: z-library (books and textbooks) and sci-hub (gatekept scientific journal articles.) I just ripped a textbook for class off z-library and snatched a required reading from sci-hub. Life is good and education should be accessible at every stage and station of life.
information wants to be free
Anna's Archive is an open source mirror library
The worldās largest open-source open-data library. Mirrors Sci-Hub, Library Genesis, Z-Library, and more.
Important rules for the "age verification" era of the internet that we're living in:
1. Do not do age verification.
2. If you have to do age verification, cheat. Do not under any circumstances give them your real ID.
The tool presents users with a 3D model they can then manipulate to, the creator says, bypass Discord's age verification system.
Oh no I dropped my link, what a horrible thing! Sure hope this doesn't get reblogged until it reaches users from the UK and Brazil!
And remember to not make a second account just to test out what works best when verifying your identity
A reminder that we still dont support Age Verification bullshit.

It *is* a problem that charismatic species are often focused on for conservation at the expense of less charismatic but important species, but threatened species that are the subject of a lot of public outreach and education are also typically strategically selected.
I suspect that monarch butterflies are an example of this. Milkweed is a highly valuable plant for pollinators and a host plant for like. 400+ insect species. Getting people to plant it to save monarchs is funny because you're essentially finessing people into saving a ton of other insects that they wouldn't ordinarily care about
"Save the bees" isn't misguided, it's just the version of the truth you would tell a 5 year old. If a small kid asks about the colors of the rainbow you don't start explaining that visible light has wavelengths of 400-700 nanometers
A lot of people don't even know that there are different types of bees. things like planting native flowers, stopping using insecticides, etc, benefit all bees and all insects generally
ALSO
it's actually a GOOD thing to have lots of conservation efforts focusing on "Charismatic megafauna," especially apex predators
Because big animals like tigers need a LOT of space
So creating a preserve to save tigers...saves thousands of other species, because the tigers need miles and miles of habitat to live on, and that habitat needs to be healthy to support the tigers
They're called "umbrella species" and they're a great thing.
giant redwood trees really are so cool, they just have something incredibly special going on. it's hard to describe if you haven't seen them
a certain je ne sequoia, if you will

what is your LEAST favorite stitch?
I don't like counted work at fucking all. So: the cross stitch.
reading this as someone who does cross stitch but is scared of the other kinds of embroidery is like overhearing an incredibly tall and buff person say they have beef with Mr. Tom, the kitten that chills at the bookstore
FUCK Mr. Tom and his stupid little fluffy tail ok. And his little charted designs.
Okay, but this neglects the true villain of embroidery stitches: the French knot
Don't you dare malign my girl again
Ok the french knot is very useful but it is a BITCH to do it consistently
I just really hate the word "fandom". It's just a portmanteau of "fan" and "random". It sounds like some desperate attempt to be quirky and different. Plus, the word "fanbase" already exists.
idk, i thought it was fan + kingdom, or fanatic + domain??
but yeah, it is a bit weird how we have āfandomā when āfanbaseā already existed? but thatās language for you, always changing all the time
Actually, Anon, fandom is significantly older than fan base or fanbase; the OED gives the first known citation of fandom meaning āthe community of fans of a thingā from 1903, while their first entry for fan base isnāt until the 1970s. If you compare the frequencies of the two terms in Google Ngram Viewer, youāll see that fandom has historically been far more frequent, with fan base running a distant second (and the closed form fanbase an even more distant third).
The OED also rejects your portmanteau hypothesis, though I suppose sportswriters from the 1900s mightāve been trying to be quirky and different when they coined fandom from the productive derivational suffix -dom,Ā which the OED also gives copies examples of throughout the 1800s (including BA-dom, old fogey-dom, blizzard-dom and theater-dom.
Respect the fandom, guys. Itās older than Steve Rogers.Ā
So, seeing as the OED does not provide free access to its sources, I looked this up. According to various webpages, included this one, āfandomā was used in 1903 by the Cincinnati Enquirer to refer to baseball fans.
Thus not only do we have an early example of a word that combines āfanaticā with ā-domā as in ākingdomā, we also have a useful reminder that when it comes to excessively liking things to the point of it being its own subculture, people who are into sports have the rest of us beat by several orders of magnitude.
As someone who reads a lot of old newspapers - I have to correct the OED as āfandomā was in wide use by the 1890s.
The Minneapolis Journal published a sports column called āMatters in Fandomā in 1892.
Use for non-sports fans dates back to at least the 1910s for film fansā¦
And the 1940s for science fiction fansā¦
The āheā in question here being Fritz Lang, director of Metropolis.
