“Blackthumb.” He filed away the terminology for later use. “You may. My scans indicate there is an obstruction, likely caused by excess sand buildup.”
That would cause problems later, he was sure, but it wasn’t a problem he could do anything about at the moment. So, he filed it away as well.
“It must be difficult to keep a car running in these conditions.”
He nodded, still studying the joints as he reached for his tools. His hands were steady and practiced as he took the casings apart and set them carefully aside before setting to work on the interior. “Can be, some days. But you keep ‘em workin’ right and they’ll run forever. Longer than you will. I mean, not you, but people like me, we don’t last as long. Machines do.”
It was sand, mostly, getting in where it shouldn’t have, but as he worked he found a few cords and wires knocked loose. Hydraulics, maybe, from the size. “This in here, the red one--s’posed to be hooked up, yeah?”
wintermae:
Mae managed not to make a face at the mention of more power–she couldn’t hear the phrase without thinking of Tim Taylor from Home Improvement. She did perk up at the idea of better mileage. “Okay, the whole farther on less guzz thing ‘s somethin’ I can definitely get behind.”
She glanced down to where he’d tapped, tilting her head some. “I don’t really have cause to worry about my axles. Not usually.”
"I’ll start with that part, then,” he agreed, nodding eagerly. And while he was already in the engine, she hadn’t said she didn’t want a little more power. It certainly couldn’t hurt. As for the rest... “You think you don’t, ‘til you do,” he insisted. “The whole frame’s weak. Just let me make it stronger. That’s it. Nothin’ else.”

THE WORLD (Mad Max: Fury Road)
As the world fell, each of us in our own way was broken. It was hard to know who was more crazy… me… or everyone else.

BT started to sit down. He disliked the delay, but if he was going to look for Cooper. it would be better to do so while in optimal working conditions. Or, as close to optimal working conditions as he could manage. “Are you a technician?” he asked. He was sure he could walk Nux through any complicated repairs, but it would be helpful if he knew the basics already.
“Blackthumb,” Nux corrected, already half-distracted as he got a better look at the damage to the machine’s knees. He was still unable to get a clear look of how it was supposed to fit together, so he slid his hands carefully over the panels covering BT’s legs, checking how they were attached. “Means I can fix anything. Cars, mostly. Engines. Can I take the case off? Can’t get a look at it.”
justholybranches:
“Scanning.”
He was silent for several seconds.
“No parts are absent. Areas most in need of attention are the knees, left shoulder, and ejection hatch.” If he had to guess, someone had tried to enter his chassis through that door. He wasn’t sure what they had planned on finding, but BT doubted it mattered.
That was a very handy trick. Repairs would get done so much quicker if the machines could just tell you what needed fixing. Its shoulders were too high up, and Nux had no idea what an ejection hatch was, so he started at the knees, inspecting them more closely.
“Might need you to sit down,” he decided after a moment. “Stuff’s disconnected, looks like, 'specially this one--” Nux pointed at BT’s right leg. “’S not aligned right. Not bending like the other one. I think I can fix it.”
justholybranches:
“I would appreciate any help you can provide. I don’t know the area well. My map is incomplete.” BT attempted to stand again. Again, his joints ground and locked as he tried.
“…I will need assistance with repairs first,” he added, sounding as sheepish as a Titan could.
“Yeah! Sure!” The War Boy immediately hopped to, making a quick but thorough circuit of the machine, studying the parts that had gotten exposed when it pulled itself out of the sand--or at least the parts he could see from the ground. This was a very big machine. “Mostly just cleaning stuff out, looks like,” he commented. “Couple loose parts...uh...don’t think anything’s missing, though. Doesn’t look like it. Can you tell?”
warrioressofhell:
“I can find something. I’m pretty good at that. You’ll drive, I’ll scout. How’s that sound?”
“Sounds great, ‘cept there’s nothin’ to drive without the axle. We’ve gotta get it on foot.”
justholybranches:
“UN Relief Force. They were sending medical supplies to Alice Springs. It was supposed to be classified, but…guess someone found out. You haven’t heard any rumors about trains coming through, have you?” He risked taking a step out of the cave so the guy could get a better look. Nobody here but us cowboys.
“...No?” To be entirely honest, Nux hadn’t heard of most of those things. Or places? At least one of them sounded like a place. When the other man came out a bit farther, Nux reciprocated by stepping around the end of the wreck, keeping his pike clutched in one fist, just in case. The other guy--Jesse McCree, he’d said--was decently-dressed and well-armed. That was a rare sight out here. “Somethin’ this big could’ve just been spotted on a patrol,” he pointed out. “’S how I saw it.”
justholybranches:
“A jump kit, weapons, perhaps some survival gear, depending on what he could salvage.” The implication wasn’t lost on BT. The jump kit alone had high worth on other planets; he couldn’t calculate how much it would be worth here. Possibly worth killing for. “I need to find him.”
Nux considered that, and asked the next most obvious question: “What’s in a jump kit?” Weapons alone were always valuable, but usually not worth killing for by themselves--you could always disarm a prisoner and get both at once. “Need help lookin’?” he added, a bit too eagerly.
He knew he shouldn’t offer--he should go straight back to the Citadel and report what he’d found. He was only out here to scout. But this was the kind of machine a revhead could only dream of, and it seemed like a terrible waste to just walk away.
warrioressofhell:
“I am,” she agreed. “We could just go steal a new one. Someone out there has to have one, right?”
“‘Course. Find one that fits, hook it up...easy to do, but it’ll take time.”
justholybranches:
“Jesse McCree. I’m not from around here.”
He wasn’t going to name his affiliation because that seemed like signing his own death warrant. He hadn’t worn anything with an Overwatch or Blackwatch logo for a reason. He’d even gotten the Deathlock logo off his old jacket, just for the occasion. Closest thing to an identifying marker was the UFO shirt from some truck stop in Nevada, and even then all that said was he was American. The accent probably gave that away.
“They needed some extra muscle guarding the convoy so I got roped into it. For all the good it did,” he added under his breath.
None of that was particularly useful, but information-gathering had never been Nux’s strong point. Or information in general, really.
He risked another look, longer this time, squinting at the shadow under the outcropping. “Who needed more muscle?” he asked, trying again. Whoever the junkers had fought, they’d beaten hard. That would be good to know at the Citadel, right?”
ϟ -Nux from justholybranches!McCree
Nux’s scars were all so deliberately placed that he didn’t spare much thought for the one he hadn’t chosen unless it was pointed out. Then again, in a way he’d chosen that one too.
“’S the Immortan’s mark,” he explained, reaching up to trace the fiery wheel with a finger. “Puts it on all his stuff.”
ϟ - oh wait i could jihiko too for a modern au!
Nux jerked away from the nurse’s hand on his chest--or at least, he moved away as far as the needles and tubes and narrow bed would allow. Ordinarily, he didn’t care who looked at his scarring--after all, it was meant to be impressive--but these days, things were different. Especially in this place.
“That ain’t your problem,” he snapped. “It got healed over ages ago anyway. It’s done.”
ϟ - warrioressofhell
Even after all their time spent in each other’s company, Nux held very still whenever Mic decided she wanted to touch him. In another time, another place, it would have been like watching someone try not to spook a small bird that had landed on them.
“Those ones hurt a bit,” he admitted once her fingers had left his face. “We did ‘em all at once, so it’d be faster. Couldn’t talk for a whole week.”

justholybranches:
McCree only caught a glimpse of the person before they got behind cover, but it was enough to let him know one important fact: that whoever it was, they were bigger than him and probably new how to use that to their advantage.
Time to turn on the charm, I guess.
“Steady on,” McCree called, holding up his hands. “I’m not having the best day. I won’t draw if you don’t.”
Please don’t draw, I don’t wanna have to kill anyone else today.
“You’re not with those bastard junkers, are you?”
A call to not fight wasn’t something often heard in the Wasteland, and Nux cautiously peered over the wreck, pike in hand, just in case. “I ain’t no rustbucket junker!” he called back. ‘Who’re you supposed to be?”
The guy wasn’t a junker, then. He didn’t look like a buzzard either, but that didn’t mean he’d side with the Citadel. Every settlement was its own faction.
