PSA: For fan works, reblog and like from OP
Tumblr is rolling out a new reblog/notes system that completely disregards creators. In their new system, they're taking a twitter-style approach where reblogs will have their own notes that DO NOT contribute to the original post's notes.
Because of this, creators will no longer be able to see an accurate display of likes/reblogs/etc. This is completely altering the way feedback and responses to works are going to be received on this website.
If you come across a fan work that you enjoy, please take the extra step to go to OPs original post, and leave your comment/like/reblog there. Or go one step further and send an ask to OP directly to tell them what you liked!
I really hope Tumblr staff reverses course and reverts to the original reblog system for the sake of the large base of creators who use this site to share their works, but until then, please be considerate and make sure the creators here see/feel the love.

If only there were some sort of facility where teenagers could be taught new skills.
Anyway, here's a helpful diagram. When I was hit on the temple this was one of the harder things I had to reteach myself. Don't be shamed into not asking questions, and it's alright if it takes you a while to figure it out. Don't let someone make you feel bad for learning new things, or relearning old ones.
Sometimes, unfortunately, you have to teach yourself. YouTube is a valid option.
yeah okay ill reblog that :]

imo the best way to interpret those “real people don’t do x” writing advice posts is “most people don’t do x, so if a character does x, it should be a distinguishing trait.” human behavior is infinitely varied; for any x, there are real people who do x. we can’t make absolute statements. we can, however, make probabilistic ones.
for example, most people don’t address each other by name in the middle of a casual conversation. if all your characters do that, your dialogue will sound stilted and unnatural. but if just one character does that, then it tells us something about that character.
OPPOSE THE FEDERAL BOOK BAN
At a time when our nation needs more civic understanding, empathy, and critical thinking, we should expand access to information, not narrow
..."EveryLibrary strongly opposes H.R. 7661 and any federal legislation that conditions education funding on restrictions about what books and materials schools may make available to students.
This bill places the federal government in the position of dictating what young people are permitted to read by threatening to withhold funding if certain viewpoints or topics appear in school collections."

Not to sound like a decrepit, rambling corpse about it, but back in my day Word used to be a pre installed program that came with your computer, if you were running Windows.
No subscription. Just program.
On your computer. You got to use it forever and ever and never had to worry about it going away.
Because it was physically on your computer. As a program. That you actually owned. Not because you got it separately, but because it was a standard inclusion with your computer.
I'm sorry but I'll just never get over it. I remember when companies cared about their products being usable out of the box. I remember when our things belonged to us.
Old man shaking fist at cloud, wherein the cloud is the background of the Windows 98 logo.
I JUST YELLED ABOUT THIS ON X TOO this and the loss of MINESWEEPER and SOLITAIRE I will absolutely never forgive, I'm so SICK of *a word document* not being a basic, offline usable function
Human relationships are not transactional but they are reciprocal, which I think many of you with your ‘i don’t owe anyone anything’ shtick are too happy to forget
Transactional: everything has to be exactly 50/50 all the time, pay me back for the £5 sandwich or buy me something worth exactly £5, I refuse to make an effort for you if there’s nothing in it for me
Reciprocal: you were there for me when I needed help, and I’m going to do the same for you, it doesn’t matter if one of us needs more or is capable of less, because the point is not equivalent exchange but mutual care

I think this might be the most beautiful meme I've ever seen. I just spent five minutes extolling all its virtues to my husband:
It doesn't even mention Julius Caesar or the Ides of March.
It's from a very different segment of the play
It's not even the famous part of that segment that everyone knows by heart
The "I'm just sayin'" attitude of all the Seinfeldians in the screenshot (although if memory serves, what they're actually saying is, "not that there's anything wrong with that")
It just comes at the whole situation in such an oblique fashion
I don't think I've ever seen an Ides of March meme do anything like this before
I love it and I love you for bringing it to me.
so I'm rewatching Iron Lung
And I've just realized that the fandom gets very caught up in Simon being a wet cat and a sad man
And I noticed that we have forgotten that Simon, throughout the movie, and even in some flashbacks, is very stubborn and somewhat argumentative and very easily and quickly irritated
Like yeah Simon has his moments of crumpling to the floor and doing some stupid shit when the depression hits like drinking rubbing alcohol, who wouldn't have a breakdown of some sort in that situation?
But he ends up picking himself back up each time determined that he is not going to die in the blood ocean. There are even points in the movie where he says "what's the point?" While STILL pushing forward
And even when you reach the end of the movie and he realizes that he is going to die in the blood ocean and nothing can be done about it, he is still stubborn and he still fights to the very end
I mean, he ripped his own fucking arm off.
He actively challenged Elli and talked back to a god.
And I feel that in a lot of fan art and fanfiction that I've seen people are forgetting that
And that's not to criticize the art or the role players or the fanfiction because I've seen all that on here and it's good and I enjoy it, and i like sad Simon moments also, (one of my favorites being "you sent me down here to die and you dont even known my name?") but I would really love to see more true to character, angry and determined Simon content
Subscribestar quietly updated their TOS yesterday to ban a load of previously allowed content at the behest of payment processors. There are no safe platforms. This will keep happening and we have to fight back.
The government is asking for public comments on whether banks should be able to deny you from buying legal goods at their own whim (i.e. how they're cracking down on art, Substar, itch, Patreon, etc)
This is your chance to tell them directly that you don't want to be told how to spend your money:

✨ Guidance on submitting an effective comment per the Free Speeh Coalition via ECR News:
"YES it's a good idea to comment on this as ero creatives. the FSC is also submitting a comment. Summarized advice from the FSC (from their lobbyists) was that you should tell your story/explain why the issue is important to you, and – most importantly – clearly say what you want the Fed to do about it. In this case, eliminating "reputation risk" from the Board's supervisory programs."
Before anyone suspects this is only going to benefit republican institutions, remember that last year the OCC specifically named adult industries as a sector facing unfair debankment.
Please leave a comment as so many others have done already! Artists need you and you're going to need you too because they never stop with what you personally find distasteful. They are insatiable and you will watch your livelihoods, what you love, disappear too.

Fuck censorship!
"Why do you buy books when the library is right there?"
Because publishing houses will not continue printing paper books if libraries are their only customers.
Also, I like being able to read at my leisure and generally have books at hand.
#public libraries are good because they let people access books they might never otherwise read#private book ownership is good because it's Yours#physical books are good because they last a long time and again it's Yours#ebooks are good because you can fit a whole library into the physical space of a single book and they're cheaper to produce#audiobooks are good because they're accessible to people with eyesight or visual reading issues and leave your hands free#in conclusion: all books are good and people should enjoy them however and whenever they can#(lest it be misunderstood I agree with you completely OP I just also really like books in general and it got away from me)
YES. all books. every kind
