Ginelle and I had our last legs session yesterday and I think we’re ready to go for Friday! I know I’ve put in the training over the last 6 weeks, so now it’s just the mental game I need to conquer. Today is a rest day and I’m trying to convince myself I can do it!!

3 Sleeps til the Tower!
The big day is just about here! In a mere 3 days, six weeks of hard work in both training and fundraising will culminate in myself and four others in my team scaling the 51 floors and 1,103 stairs of Auckland’s Sky Tower, raising money for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.
Steph and I had our last leg working this morning down at Boxing Central, hitting the leg extension, leg press, hamstring curls, deadlifts, weighted lunges, and goblet squats. It was an awesome session for me as I’ve increased my leg extension weight by 10kg and my leg press by 20kg since we first started on our mission!
It feels like it’s been a very long six weeks, and to be honest, I’m pretty drained! It’s now just rest and relaxation for the next couple of days leading up to the climb. It will be tough for me to miss my boxing classes, but will make all the difference to the climb so for once I’m going to do what I’m told and rest up. It doesn’t happen too often ;)
We still have a little way to go until we have reached our team fundraising target of $5,000 - but I’m confident we can get there. We’ve come this far and we have worked far too hard to give up now!
I’m starting to get excited for the climb - when I look back at our journey, how far we have come with the training and the money we have raised, I feel like I’ve achieved so much - it’s no wonder I’m tired :)
Bring on the Stairclimb - we’re ready for this!! And even more ready for the pizza and beer celebration afterwards - we’ve all earned a treat!

4 more sleeps until the Sky City Corporate Stairclimb (1,103 stairs) so I smashed out 575 goblet squats yesterday with my new 10kg kettlebell. I did them in sets of 25 with a water break at 300, 400 and 500.
I have soccer tonight and our last legs session at Boxing Central at 7am tomorrow. On Wednesday I’ll do some more goblet squats (and air squats) and rest on Thursday and Friday moring.
I’m up to 64% of my fundraising target, so I need to raise another $360 by Friday afternoon.

2 Weeks Until I Run Up The Sky Tower!!!
On Friday 14th August, my teammates and I will run up 1,100-and-something stairs to raise money for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer NZ. People ask me if I’m scared, and the answer is YES. But I need to remember what I’m capable of and give myself credit for determination. These photos were taken 11 months apart. The first one in August last year when I was like “I should get into shape”. The second one was taken a week ago and was the result of being consistent and breaking it up into smaller, achievable goals. So I need to break the 51 flights of stairs into smaller achievable goals. 10 flights, 20 flights...I need to trust my training and trust myself not to give into my fear of heights. Nothing happens until something has meaning.
Listening to a Charles Faulkner audiobook this morning, this line just jumped out at me and made me think about not only why we are doing what we’re doing, but also what motivates people in general to take action and change their lives, or the lives of others.
I tried to think back to when I was a “bigger” girl, and what prompted me to change my life. And it was a certain picture I like to call “Where’s Santa?”.

60 floors, 960 steps, yeah this pretty much sums it up.
This is why I’m hobbling around at the moment!!
I was struck down by the dreaded lurgy for 9 days but this week I’ve cracked back into it!
On Tuesday morning at 7am at Boxing Central, my new fitness buddy Ginelle and I were put through our paces by trainer Francis.
First were weighted back squats (15kg for me and 20kg for Gin) for 1 minute followed by weighted lunges on the spot for 30″ then back to a minute of weighted back squats.
3 sets!
Then 6 tabata rounds *each* of:
* travelling lunges with 10kg kettlebell
* big tyre flips
* squats with 10 kettlebell
The rest periods within the tabata were air squats.
Followed by 6 tabata rounds of jump squats!!
This morning (Thursday), Denise and I walked up Mt Wellington and ran back to work (approx. 6km all up) and then I had a 45 minute PT session with my trainer Jerome. And it finished with me doing chin ups!! (with a giant rubber band) Result!!!
5 weeks to go!!
Today I was inspired by my team mate Ginelle so I hit the Kohimarama stairs before work. 91 stairs x 6 times = 546 stairs. Which is around half of the Sky Tower stairs. It really hit my thighs and glutes as I thought, but the surprise was how much it burned my lungs! I found the stairs quite shallow and steep which triggered my fear of heights so the railing was my friend on the upper flights :)
My calf was twitching with my foot on the accelerator on the drive to work, so I made sure to pull my following distance right back!!!
I’m keen to do this every 3 days at least so I build up my stair conditioning.
Tomorrow I’m meeting the team at the Castor Bay stairs so there should be some good pics there. And on Sunday I’ve got a 5km race. Hopefully I’m not hobbling by then!

(IT) got real this morning - first official day of team training for our stairclimb. What did we do? Met at Boxing Central at 7am and did a WOD which included any type of squat, weighted squat, lunge and weighted lunge you could think of with our trainer Francis! Ginelle and Vilo are pretty fit so I did my best to keep up. It was challenging to walk up and down the stairs at the end to exit the building.I definitely need a jog tomorrow morning to stretch those thighs and calves out!

Training Is About to Begin!
I have two main goals over the next 6 weeks:
1. Train (physically and mentally) to run up 51 flights of stairs on Friday 14th August
2. Raise at least $1000 for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer NZ. And at least $5000 for our team total
I’m doing the challenge with 4 other (insane) people from SKY TV. We’re going to do group training sessions and I will focus on this with my personal trainer to get my legs stair-ready!
