hey everyone! many of us have exams coming up, and i’m sure we’re all familiar with the saying - if you fail to prepare, you must prepare to fail - so let’s all prepare well! this is a guide i made for myself and it really helped me last year, so hopefully it helps you too :)

two weeks before exams:

- create a timetable in excel, and stick to it. be sure to include time each day for sleeping, exercise, and free time as well as work, school, and study.

- take an empty folder with plastic pockets, and write the name of a subject on each pocket. so if you have 10 subjects, the first 10 pockets should have the names of those subjects written on them. make sure you don’t write the subjects in twice!

- put papers, loose notes, handouts, past tests/exams/etc. in the plastic pockets, and use them for revision. this is useful because it means you don’t have to lug around individual folders for each subject.

- look over past test scores to make sure you know what you need to focus on when revising. subjects that you didn’t go so well in should be your priorities.

one week before exams:

- aim for around three hours of revision per day, and more on weekends.

- consider getting up early in order to study. you’d be surprised at what you can achieve from the hours of 05:30 to 07:30! not only does it give you a productive start to the day, but it saves you time later on. 

- alternatively, consider getting up early and going for a run or doing other exercise. this is useful for getting rid of sluggishness and stress, as well as getting your blood flowing.

- when at school, the temptation to waste time in class can be overwhelming - especially if the class isn’t a favourite of yours. try using an app such as selfcontrol, which blocks “time wasting” sites. listen to what your teacher is saying, take notes, and make the most of class time.

- if any of your exams allow you to bring in a cheat sheet, start writing it well in advance. this gives you time to edit it and include everything that you’ll need, instead of just throwing it together 20 minutes before your exam. 

the day of exams:

- the night before, revise from 18:00 to 20:00, and then go to bed at 21:00. getting enough rest is a key factor of how well you’ll do. don’t rely on coffee or energy drinks - they might work for a while, but they aren’t a substitute for getting enough sleep. 

- get up at 06:30 or earlier. this gives you time to do some exercise, have a good breakfast, and do some morning revision.

- exercise is key to waking up and sharpening your brain for the day ahead. running, yoga, and pilates are all good ideas. if you don’t feel up to a workout, try mediation - “smiling mind” is popular in my country, and i recommend it to all. 

- have a shower. wash your whole body and your hair. shave if you feel like it. being clean always helps me to focus, and nobody wants to be stinking up the exam room!

- have breakfast. i always take my multivitamin, vitamin b12, iron, and vitamin c, as well as a berocca effervescent. black coffee is also a great option for waking up and staying focused all day. if you don’t like eating first thing in the morning, that should be enough - just make sure you eat before the exam. in terms of food, i recommend smoothies, fruit, and porridge. don’t have sugary cereal, breakfast biscuits or toast - aim for low g.i. brain foods instead.

- ensure you have everything you need; a clear water bottle, a clear pencil case or ziplock bag with stationary in it, a calculator/dictionary/cheat sheet, etc. 

- relax, you can do this! believe in yourself! :)
