You know, I wonder if the recent plague of "being selfish is a good thing ackshully! being selfish is emotionally healthy!" is because of therapists and self-help video makers saying "it's okay to be selfish sometimes" because it's easier to get that into someone's head than to deprogram all the little ways they've been taught that caring for themself is selfish and therefore Bad.

And then instead of going on to actual deprogramming and diving into the complex depths of "in order to be a good person I have to be kind and help others when I can, but in order to be a healthy one I should consider carefully when it's worth putting my own well-being at risk for their sake", people just stay in the psychological kiddie pool of "I don't have to think of anyone else because my therapist said so!"
