Just saw The Batman and hope you did, too. I saw a question on Reddit. “What do you think of Pattinson as Batman.”
Sharing my extended answer here.
He’s the absolute correct representation of trauma erasing Bruce Wayne and “healing” creating the symbol of Batman.
It’s going to be great to watch him evolve into the role as Batman matures. The best moments were watching his failures and mistakes. Humanizing the myth of Batman in a way that felt authentic and painful. Just as it is in the comics. And just as healing from trauma is in life.
Life is ironic sometimes. This week I was diagnosed with PTSD. And while my mentality and health are more complicated than that DSM-IV pull quote definition, this is the first time in my life I’ve had a definition. Now, it makes sense that the first half of my life was spend dedicated to making a Batman blog, hunting graphic novels in a library, and watching every Bat-related piece of media I could. And that how now, as an adult, I hold on to the character and memories of my pubescent years in comics as a place of safety, familiarity and healing. He was my symbol for processing traumas I couldn’t speak of and didn’t understand.
The Batman was the film I needed right now and by extension, the film Batman needed. Those recent Justice League movies made me fall out of love with the character. Probably because it wasn’t about being in pain, it was about being a super hero with a bunch of super friends. Or. A bunch of super friends competing with Marvels super friends.
I think you need to really know Batman to fully appreciate Matt Reeves take and home run on this movie.
