The difference between Camp and Avant Garde is that Camp is based in fun and not giving a fuck what other people think, while Avant Garde is an intellectual exercise and based heavily on what other people think. You can see this difference very starkly on this Met Gala red carpet. To paraphrase Margaret Cho’s tweet about it, camp requires you to not take yourself too seriously. 

Camp also doesn’t need to be loud though it often is. There’s some really nice quiet camp happening on this red carpet and a whole lot of loud that isn’t camp.
