Do you have anything about the relationship between fatness and asthma? I'm fat (235 lb) with intractable asthma and although my allergy / asthma doc KNOWS that sustained weight loss is statistically impossible he keeps recommending it anyway. :/

There is a correlation between fatness and asthma, such that fatter people are more likely to have asthma than thinner people. 

However, nearly all of the research testing whether weight loss improves asthma severity and symptoms examines outcomes following weight loss surgeries like stomach amputation (ie., “gastric bypass”) and stomach squeezing (i.e., “gastric banding”). Because these surgeries are so dangerous (common outcomes include severe malnutrition, alcohol dependence, bone density loss, depression, and debilitating digestive problems), I simply do not consider this to be valid evidence. 

This review of the literature only identified five experiments that tested the effects of behavioral weight loss interventions, but the sample sizes were so small (two studies has less than 20 participants) and the samples and methods so diverse that the authors could not reliably evaluate the strength of those effects. 

So there does not appear to be compelling evidence right now that weight loss is a safe and scientifically validated treatment for asthma… and of course, as you know already, there is no safe and permanent way to lose weight anyway…

Also, fun fact, children who present asthma symptoms are often put on inhaled corticosteroids which can cause people to gain weight, which is, again, nearly impossible to lose. I was a chunky kid, but was put on steroids for asthma as a child and my weight went up and up.
