Compound words in Chinese

Many words in Chinese are formed from characters which individually each have their own meaning, and one really helpful way to memorize new words is to break them down into the separate characters. Here are some examples (this is a non-exhaustive list): 

Nouns

地图 dì tú – map 

地 = land 

图 ＝ picture, drawing

风景 fēng jǐng – landscape 

风 = wind

景 = scenery 

球场 qiú chǎng = sports field 

球 = ball

场 = area, place 

电视 diàn shì – television 

电 = electricity 

视 = to look 

山顶 shān dǐng – peak, summit 

山 = hill, mountain 

顶 = top 

高跟鞋 gāo gēn xié = high heels

高 = high 

跟 = heel

鞋 = shoe

图书馆 tú shū guǎn – library 

图 = map, picture

书 = book

馆 = hall

望远镜 wàng yuǎn jìng – telescope 

望 = gaze

Where did the vowel space get its shape?

Quick answer: The jaw.

Slightly longer answer: The jaw is attached like a hinge, so it doesn’t drop straight down when you open your mouth. Moreover, your jaw is the part that’s moving, not the rest of your head. So, when your mouth opens, it’s like a door swinging open: it moves along a circular path relative to the immobile parts of your head.

But the vowel space isn’t rounded, it’s a trapezoid. This is due to the simplification of a complex shape to something easier to draw and conceptualize. Here’s a gif of how the tongue moves to create different mouth shapes that correspond to different vowels.

Close/High + Back = [u]

Mid + Back = [o] or [ɔ]

Open/Low + Back = [ɑ]

Open/Low + Front = [æ]

Mid + Front = [e] or [ɛ]

Close/High + Front = [i]

(Note: This isn’t showing all of the vowels of English, which is why I group some of the -High, -Low vowels together)
