Compound words in Chinese
Many words in Chinese are formed from characters which individually each have their own meaning, and one really helpful way to memorize new words is to break them down into the separate characters. Here are some examples (this is a non-exhaustive list):
球场 qiú chǎng = sports field
山顶 shān dǐng – peak, summit
高跟鞋 gāo gēn xié = high heels
图书馆 tú shū guǎn – library
望远镜 wàng yuǎn jìng – telescope
人行道 rén xíng dào – sidewalk
十字路口 shí zì lù kǒu – crossroads
十字 = a written character which looks like a cross
热情 rè qíng – enthusiastic, warmhearted
客气 kè qi – polite, courteous
