I still kinda wanna be a Christian. I left the faith many years ago and ever since I still feel a pull towards it. I know the church has done a LOT of bad to queer folks and I know it’s probably dumb, but I’d really appreciate some advice.

I’m an ex-Christian but I do know some things. If you feel that it’s the right path for you, go for it. There are churches out there who are queer friendly if you can find them. I am not a Christian anymore but I know there are progressive Christians out there.

i’ve said it once and i’ll say it again.  queer people need to trust other queer people.  

don’t question someone else’s labels.  TRUST that they’ve done that already.  if they ask you for advice, fine, but DO NOT go in swinging.  don’t go up to a straight trans man and ask why he doesn’t identify as a lesbian.  don’t talk to non-binary people and tell them that their identity is a sham if they don’t transition.  don’t ask bi people when they’re going to pick a side.  don’t assume that someone who is ace is just repulsed by their own internalized homophobia.

like just… have respect for your fellow lgbtq+ folks because there are so few of us in an OCEAN of hetero-cisnormativity.  we don’t have to chip away at each other until only the Cardinal Few remain.  there is no reason that we can’t have space for the people who question, the people who change their minds, the people who dip a toe in and pull back out.  i am HERE for those people, just as much as i am HERE for the people who can write a dissertation on their attraction and knew from the moment they were born that they were Hella Gay.  

there is nothing simple about self-discovery and frankly, i’m not here on this earth long enough to scrutinize my fellow marginalized peoples.  there’s no reason to do that shit.  it does not, in fact, hurt queer people to be wholly accepting of any wayward identity.  non-dysphoric?  demi-gray-ace as hell?  don’t care, as long as you’re fighting on my side, because i’m fighting on yours.

This is something everyone new to the queer/LGBT+ communities should read and take to heart. 

Additionally for new/younger members, especially those who are more isolated from the wider community IRL: it’s bad form at best to question someone else’s label(s). It’s a major faux pas to police someone else’s labels. You should be wary of people who question/police others’ labels, and you should avoid the people who do it or try to encourage you to do it. 

This is very basic etiquette that is sadly being lost/erased as the younger generations are actively being targeted to spread negative rhetoric before they can learn or be taught any better by our veterans/elders.

i hate the whole like pressure to experience relationships on a timeline, like you’re “supposed” to have crushes at a young age, “supposed” to start dating in high school, “supposed” to lose your virginity as a teen, “supposed” to be dating and sleeping around through high school and college, “supposed” to settle down in your mid to late twenties, and “supposed” to have your own family soon after you marry and then ur supposed to enforce that timeline on ur kids like how many times do family members ask u when ur gonna get a partner and get married… it’s like the natural enemy of having real, vulnerable, deep relationships with other ppl because you keep feeling like you have to settle for somebody in order to fit within that timeline, or else u feel broken and out of place for not fitting into it… i really believe this is why i hear about so many people being stuck in unhappy marriages like how do u cultivate something fulfilling when ur fighting against a deadline

also this feeds into the whole expectation that any of these things are “supposed” to be done AT ALL. there’s nothing wrong with never or rarely having sex, with not dating around, with not getting married, with not having kids… i think having this kind of checklist is unhealthy not just for pressuring ppl into doing things before they’re ready but for pressuring people into doing any of it at all point blank period end of sentence
