This may be just me trying to link two media I like, but I realised Usogui and Perfume shared the same final arc somehow ??

(so uh spoiler under the cut)

Like both media having a final arc where the main subject is finally arriving to its climax ->(Baku and Hal's most important gambling/Grenouille's perfect perfume being made)

and those two things having the same effect when they're released to the people, that is to say a huge sensual wave rushing through everyone's witnessing the situation.

Whether it's pheromones from the perfume or the adrenaline of gambling, they both get the same carnal reaction, and I find the meaning interesting that the most they could get from the elaborate art of making smells or game's strategies, all gets down to purely primary desire.

That's right! Did you know this movie manga artwork, that graced many a wall in the early 00s, is based on a real photo of movie Akio's voice actor and mangaka Chiho Saito, taken at the iconic Meguro Club Sekitei love hotel? Well, it is!

And you know what else? We translated the interview it came with! H! Rockin' On Japan is a music-oriented magazine, covering the Utena movie more from Oikawa's perspective. The queer vibes in the interview are off the charts, and it's clear as day that the shift in Akio's visual style from the series to the film is in no small part in response to Oikawa's involvement. This interview is a really neat look into the context around that change, and it's all thanks to translation by Nagumo and editing by Ayu Ohseki! I could make a whole analysis as to why Kaji and Hal could be boyfriends or I could just say that they have the same silly sideburns and that's why they must be boyfriends. Talking about my 30 favourite manga in 30 days

Day 8: Today I'm talking about Usogui by Sako Toshio. Its the longest manga I've ever read and also one of my first. It has one of the most beautifully crafted stories I have ever read, it had hooked from the start. The highlight was Baku always saying "You are a big liar aren't you and I am thr Liar Eater", I dont know why but it seems really funny to me. Baku and Souichi/Hal have a great dynamic and I love both of them. An a completely different note Kaji is an amazing character and I love how he developed and became smarter as the went on, he reminds me of Nao from Liar Game. It also has a great overall cast, all of the referees are really interesting with my favourite one being Midara. Lalo with Ideal is really great I love Billy Craig. I remember one of the reasons why I read it was because it has gambling and I was a stupid idiot back then(maybe even now). The art progression was probably the best thing like the art from the start and the ending of Usogui is VASTLY different, I like both tbh.

Its a must read for every manga reader in ny opinion. Anyways here's some panels I liked that I found on Pinterest since I dont have an Usogui folder.

I usually let anyone enjoy whatever they want, I'm not hater but a friend reminded of how loved is The Climber by the seinen community and I have so much beef with The Climber, it's so bad, it's so bad I can't, how is this one of the most loved seinen, it's such a huge performative male manga it's SO BAD I get physically tense. Like I get what the original idea was, but it's so badly written. Someone destroying themselves through their passion can be a really interesting plot but it's written in such a sigma ass way and full of misogyny too that it becomes the most insufferable thing I've ever read.

Like the parts with the mc actually climbing (cause he doesn't climb that much who would have thought) are nice, it's interesting to see his mindset when being surrounded in such a dangerous and toxic environement, but besides that? He actually doesn't do anything? He's so passive, like even besides the whole misogyny, the plot isn't that good ???? Also the SA treatment is really bad and only serves the mysogyny once again.

Oh and people have told me "but the misogyny is put here on purpose cause the characters are bad !" see I get it when a work is misogynist to a woman character to represent the oppression she's facing and actually develops her character through this, but a media where a woman (a minor as well mind you) is seen naked and objectified by men to show they are pervert, but then ! Is not usefull for the rest of the manga, or when literally EVERY women is villainized into that stereotype of "women who have sex are bad" "good women are pure and only for love🥰" I'm sorry but can we normalize media literacy again that stuff is not progressist nor made on purpose, this is purely mysogyny can people start to think again

I feel like we don't talk enough about Tastuki's fatherhood when it's so tragic to me. Not only because of what happens to him obviously, but reguarding his point of view specifically.

Like the story does not follow the trope of "bad parent creates bad consequences on their child's life" but more like "unintentional bad parenting", which is really sad knowing Tatsuki only ever approched Souichi with good intentions and love. And it's not even in a "this is for your own good" way, like he doesn't seem to even realize what he's doing is bad, because he probably went through the same education than him without realizing it was toxic, or at least thinking he left out the toxic parts out of Souichi's education.

Now Tastuki did not passed through this miraculously he's obviously very unstable but managed to live with this because of privileges, which is another point I find interesting.

We know how he practically taught Souichi to mask as a child in some flashback, when he isn't doing this at all, nor is Souichi when he becomes the leader. The whole "don't forget to be normal" to "just do whatever you want" speech, which implies that there is this unfortunately very real idea of being able to be your true self, only when you are a powerful figure, for no one would contest you out of fear. This fits well with how the whole Kiruma family is so neurodivergent coded.

But even besides that, knowing there will be a time where Souichi will be free to do whatever he wants as a leader, he still develops his mental issues, and that moment we see him at the hospital with Tastuki is just so sad, because it's the consequences of Tastuki's education finally being shown to him, and he doesn't understand why that's happening. He looks so genuinely sad for Souichi, he did what was best to him for his son but it still failed. And so, he builds the whole system to "reinsert" Souichi's memory, and it just shows how much he cares for him again :(((
