GRAND OPENING | Saturday, August 23, 2014
This past weekend we celebrated the Grand Opening of the Greensboro Boys & Girls Club! It is with great excitement that we can announce the building is DONE and ready for daily operations. It has been a long process, yet one of the most rewarding. We will definitely miss our time here.
There are many people who made this project possible. Thank you to our teachers and all the Rural Studio staff, consultants, donors, clients, local leaders, parents, family, and friends for their unwavering support!
* A special thank you to Nevin Tidmore and friends from West Alabama Mechanical who provided dinner for Saturday's event.
Rendering to Reality
Just for a little fun..here's to revisiting some of the original renderings we made during the design process as compared to the built structure!
Final | Interior
Here are a few images of the completed interior of the Greensboro Boys & Girls Club learning center.
Final | Exterior
We are excited to announce that the Greensboro Boys & Girls Club celebrated its GRAND OPENING this past weekend (more on that to come)! Here are a few images of the completed exterior of the building.
Cypress
That's a wrap, folks! With the installation of the cypress now complete, we can say that the building is 99% done! Just a few more little things to finish up on the interior, and then the Boys & Girls Club will be in business!

Cypress
We finally have cypress! Last week we received the shipment of 19,000 linear board feet and since have wasted no time in putting it up on the walls. Here's a sneak peek of some of the progress!
Purlins & Doors
In preparation for the cypress, all of the purlins have been painted and put up. We also recently built the doors for the mechanical room and storage closet. Cypress is soon to come!
Finishing Touches | Graphics
We are now in the phase of finishing touches! The restroom doors were recently made over with spiffy graphics and hardware, adding a bit of color and flair to the space. We are also excited to have installed the chilled water fountain, for which we owe a huge thanks to Mr. Tidmore for donating!
Restrooms | Toilet Partitions
Operation: Repurpose Dudley toilet partitions is complete! We were happy to save a few thousand dollars by reusing Dudley architecture building's discarded partitions, but are even happier now to be done with the re-finishing process. Lots of Bondo putty, sand paper, and paint became our friend during the several days we spent patching, sanding, priming, painting, and sealing the old partitions. We were even able to salvage the original hardware, and after a bit of polishing, we are pretty pleased with the results.
All of the fixtures are also installed and functional now as well. A big thanks to Steve Long for lending some help!
Landscaping | Grass
Meanwhile, amidst the push to finish the interior of the building, we have also directed attention to the landscape around the building. We finished grading the courtyard, spreading topsoil, and scattering grass seed. Daily summer rain showers sure have worked in our favor in seeing the grass start to sprout!
Cubbies
Though the installation of panels was finished, we still were not done working with OSB. 93 cubbies now complete the walls..and provide some great temporary storage for our tools. We can't wait to see them filled with kids' backpacks!
OSB
With the floors now sealed, we could finally install the bottom layer of OSB on the walls, thereby finishing the application of the OSB panels!
Sealing the Floor
Immediately following Pig Roast, while the building was still cleared out of all the usual construction mess, we spent several days cleaning and sealing the concrete floor. This involved many rounds of sweeping, vacuuming, scrubbing, rinsing, and buffing before the coats of sealer could finally be rolled on.
Pig Roast
Last weekend we celebrated Rural Studio's annual Pig Roast: 20th Anniversary edition! The Boys & Girls Club hosted an open house on Friday as part of the event. It was a fun-filled evening of presentations, food, and great music by the Alabama Blues Project. We were excited to be able to showcase the work in progress and thank all of our family/friends/consultants for their continued support!
