I keep seeing comments on pinterest on photos that are aonunete (Ao'nung x Neteyam) and ppl are like "they hate each other in canon wtf why are ppl shipping them"

back in my day the characters didn't even have to be in the same fandom/show to be shipped stfu

One thing I don’t understand and like about the Avatar fandom is how so many people are against shipping (and I am saying this as a person who isn’t really interested in ships in this particular franchise, that’s not what I’m here for). I don’t know if you have ever been in, like, any fandom, ever, but just so you know, ships are not about being canon, they’re about having fun. If people have fun shipping Aonung and Neteyam, or Jake and Quaritch, or Jake and Tonowari, or Neytiri and Ronal, or Neteyam and Tsireya, or Kiri and Aonung, or Lo'ak and Aonung, or Kiri and Spider (romantically) or literally anyone else, just let them be. It’s not that deep. You don’t have to agree. You don’t even have to understand it. Everybody interprets things differently. You don’t like those ships? Cool. Scroll and ignore.

Yeah, nobody cares. It’s not about that. People don’t give a shit. No, it’s not disrespectful to the characters, because it’s not fucking real. People are just exploring concepts and relationships they find interesting. It’s literally fandom culture. No need to be pressed, no need to take it personally or find it annoying. People know it’s not canon-compliant, it doesn’t have to be, there’s literally no reason for you to complain about people having harmless fun. (Also notice how these complaints mostly happen with same sex pairings. I can almost sense a common theme here)
