Small rant on Tokyo Godfathers and its terrible transmisogynistic subtitles

Tokyo Godfathers is a fantastic movie and I recommend you go watch it if you haven’t already. Its about three homeless people who find an abandoned baby and go searching for the parents. It sounds dark, but its really funny and overall just great.

I just want to point out, EVERY subbed version of this movie I have ever seen, including the official DVD release, has these same issues. And Ive never seen anyone call it out before. So, here we go.

This is Hana, a trans woman. Its literally the first thing we learn about her. She is very feminine in her speech and gestures. She does not like to be seen as male.

All the pronouns used to refer to Hana in the movie subs are male. This is somewhat a judgement call, because Japanese doesn’t use gendered pronouns. At the very least, it should have been mixed. Some characters were very accepting of Hana, there’s no reason they wouldn’t use her pronouns. Especially Miyuki.

Miyuki, the runaway teen lives with Hana. Its heavily implied that Hana has been helping Miyuki for some time. They’re close, and act like family. Miyuki  calls Hana “Obasan” - Auntie.

And yet, this is the translation we get. Uncle. Not only is it just a bad translation, In the context of the movie, it changes Hana and Miyukis relationship substantially. Miyuki may be a brat sometimes, but she is never that disrespectful to her.

Even worse is this scene, where Hana is yelled at and told to eat shit. What is said here is “jiji” which is a not so nice term for an old man. While its very obvious Hana only objects to being referred to as a man, the subbers invariably translate it into a gender neutral insult.

(also, look at Hana all dolled up. Ain’t she cute?)

So now we have this line that makes no fucking sense whatsoever:

Subbers, get your shit together please. Your refusal to acknowledge a trans person as a main character of the movie is literally ruining the script.

The cops never stop Mitthal kaanya’s auto. Mitthal kaanya, is short, wiry, rubble on the chin and on the head. But Mitthal kaanya’s distinguishing feature, are his eyes. They never seemed to agree, with what each one, saw. One night, Mitthal kaanya was driving his auto, he gave fuck-all. Lights were barely working, he gave fuck-all. Suddenly, *ka-ching* there’s a flash light in his eyes. It’s a cop.  He almost ran him over, he gave fuck-all. The cop pulls him by the collar and slaps him behind the ear. “Dikhata nahi hai, kya kaanya!” “Can you not see, yeh squint!” Mitthal’s eyes reddened. Each one, independently. The cop was drunk. He didn’t see the knee, making scrambled eggs, He could have had paav with it for weeks on end. Mitthal kaanya was put behind the locker, The cop was given a bed pan. The inspector asks for next of kin, Mitthal has no one, he gave fuck-all. They let him sleep for the night and let him out. Three, two, one, Mitthal was back in for another punch. Four, five, six, Mitthal was back in for another stitch. The inspector realized, Mitthal brought some new keepsake everytime. The slammer to the cops, a hotel for Mitthal. As always, Mitthal gave fuck-all. The cops never stop Mitthal kaanya’s auto.
