gray and juvia deep dive & why they aren’t toxic

starting with juvia’s character. we learn very early on that juvia had no real relationships (platonic, romantic, etc) as a child, even seemingly no familial connections. this leads her to phantom lord where she believes she was born to be hated and bring trouble upon others. it’s also no secret she was very attracted to gray when they met, however she wasn’t “crazy” for him. despite being her enemy, he tries not to harm her and saves her when she’s about to fall off the ledge, showing her how kind people can be and that they don’t always hate you for who you are. this is what opens her eyes and lets her experience happiness and see the sun for the first time ever. this is when she falls in love with gray. from here, we see juvia pop up at random times in the background seemingly “stalking” gray. in my eyes it is clear that she just wants to join their guild and find her real family. she leaves gifts (the bento box) for gray almost as a secret admirer because she gets too nervous to approach him. she knows she was their enemy and doesnt want to bring more harm to the guild or, more specifically, gray. she is constantly trying to prove herself worthy and make up for the lack of connection she had in her childhood.

gray’s character is a little more complex. he is ridden with survivor’s guilt from ur’s death (and later on ultear). he is not open emotionally with anyone, putting on this tough guy act and trying to remain cool. his hesitancy to juvia is not because of her as a person, rather than her being a romantic interest and him not knowing how to deal with those feelings. even when gray was a child under ur we see him try turning any emotions he has into anger, always appearing to be the “bigger man”. he does show interest in juvia (romantically or platonically, either way the interest is there), early on he often asks where she is or how she’s doing, even seeming excited when she makes it into the guild. gray also clearly has a different love style than juvia, as he is far more avoidant and detached than she is, but he always makes sure she is safe and tends to look for her first if she is nearby. even when he is talking kindly about natsu he gets embarrassed and turns red, so it’s obvious that he would act this way with her. in the gmg/eclipse arc he sacrifices himself for her before ultear reverses time and again in the alvarez empire arc. while all these things could be platonic displays of interest, it still furthers the point that he cares for her. juvia slowly teaches gray that being vulnerable is okay, erza even urging him to be honest with her. his honesty is that he “appreciates” her, and we know he would not hesitate to say he dislikes her if that were true. in the 100yq he is getting confident and realizing how he acts is only reminding her of being shut out in childhood and makes it his goal to become “good enough” for her and someone who can protect her, leading to him being more emotionally available with her.

they have different styles of loving each other but that doesn’t make them bad for each other. it is also not a secret that juvia fell first, but that doesn’t take away from gray’s apparent feelings. as for other things that antis tend to point out, it is a fictional cartoon with very different humor than we’re used to. even most animes i’ve seen have a different form of comedy. this type of comedy is also used a LOT throughout fairy tail, not just with gray and juvia. this provides reason for her behaving this way and is honestly easier to brush it off. they push each other and are constantly bettering the other.

another note here is that ive read the manga as well as watching the show and that the manga contains a lot less of these “creepy stalker” juvia moments. they add her watching gray at random points for a comedic effect and while i still see it more as juvia longing to join the guild and not knowing how to approach, i can understand why it bothers people but it is not included in the manga which is the most canon it can get!

gray’s fight against silver furthers his character development so much.. we see him learn that the way he goes about his relationships can’t remain surface level and any deeper feelings he has must be expressed. he allows himself to love more genuinely (this is where his relationship with juvia starts to grow) and brings out a positive weakness in him. his magic power is impressive here as well and clearly fueled by the love for his guild-mates, rather than a hatred for deliora or any conflicting emotions with his father. in most of gray’s big fights before this point it usually is self driven (rufus, ultear) and he doesn’t understand the value he has in the relationships he’s formed (iced shell). the fight with silver allows him to overcome these things. the next time we see him perform iced shell is very different, it’s because of the guilt he feels from his fight with natsu rather than lacking security.

The Alvarez Arc was never about Zeref vs Natsu.

It was about Zeref vs Lucy.

Hear me out.

And this may be a bit of a stretch but try to bare with me.

So the Alvarez Arc (AA) is essentially the arc of one brothers army vs another's. At least on the surface. But the main focus of the AA was Natsu's transformation and Zerefs reveal.

After Zeref reveals his and Natsus true identities to Natsu and Happy, Zeref then makes it a point from then on to try and get Natsu to change into his demon form, knowing that Natsu would probably have a hard time controlling it and would destroy everything and everyone in his path just to kill him.

Thankfully, Zeref was only half right. As evident by his four warnings to Gray to get out of his way, Natsu still had some form of control over his actions. This was because his only thoughts were getting rid of Zeref who started the war leading to Lucy's "death." He was driven by revenge, which was what Zeref wanted, as to why he painted himself as the bad guy.

But one thing Zeref hadn't really counted on was Natsus bond with one of his guildmates in particular. Zeref knew who Lucy was from the jump as she and Anna look basically identical. That and Anna and Zeref agreed it would be up to Anna's bloodline to look after the original eclipse project as well as the dragon slayers once they passed through to the other side. So right away, Zeref knows Lucy's goal is protecting Natsu and staying by his side.

So during the AA, it only makes sense that at every turn when Zeref thought he was winning, Natsu would make some miraculous return and start the fight over. But did Zeref know why or how?

Of course he did. Because that was the Heartfilia family's job. To protect and look after the dragon slayers, Natsu included.

So, when Zeref almost got his way the first time and Natsu "lost control," who brought him back to reality (with a little help from Erza)?

Lucy.

When Natsu was knocking on deaths door on the ground with a hole in his gut, who literally took on a curse that Zeref placed on the book, essentially risking their life to rewrite Natsus book, bringing him back from the brink of death to fi is the fight?

Lucy.

Even during Dragon Cry, Lucy is still a thorn in Zerefs side by showing Natsu throughout the movie that she'd always accept him no matter what form he took on, giving Natsu a sense of security, making Zerefs plan to break Natsu down until he's a mindless monster essentially impossible.

Every time during the AA and Dragon Cry movie when it seemed Zeref was finally going to get what he wanted, Lucy came in and snuffed all of his plans out like a candle.

And Zeref by the end could only watch as a human tamed one of his demons. His most powerful demon at that.

Lucy was even almost kind of acknowledged as Natsus reason to live. (As he did try to kill Zeref fully conscious of what he was doing and knowing it would kill him too when he thought she was dead.)

Zeref even tried to play mind games with Natsu but got blocked because the only thing on Natsus mind was Lucy and her life.

The entire AA is literally just Zeref telling Natsu one thing to make him feel terrible and Lucy reassuring him that it wasn't true.

Zeref even tried to make Natsu feel guilty about Lucy rewriting his book, essentially signing her own death warrent, only for Natsu to brush it off because he had more faith in her than some curse Zeref put on a book.

Every time Zeref tried to get into Natsus head, whether Lucy was there or not, her voice always seemed to ring through louder than Zerefs.

The entire arc is a battle for Natsus mentality and its not even being fought by Natsu.

Natsus fighting the physical battle, but Lucy was fighting for Natsus humanity. She was fighting for Natsus life.

In the end she won, and Zeref took the loss with a smile on his face, knowing that somehow a human girl had defeated him in a mental battle over his brother's life.

And he even took pride in it.

Pride in the fact Natsu had found someone who would go to such great lengths, even so far as challenging Zerefs curse power in order to save Natsus life.

That's what the whole arc was, a battle for Natsus fate. A battle that Lucy won and Zeref was happy about it.

Even Mavis knew only Lucy could challenge Zerefs power and change Natsus fate, leaving Lucy with the book as she went to help Natsu confront Zeref.

The one who decided Natsus fate vs the one who changed it.

the idea that “power of friendship” is plot armor and is what ultimately makes fairy tail disliked is so incorrect. i generally like the trope but can see how it could get in the way sometimes, however using the argument against fairy tail makes no sense and here’s why. fairy tail at it’s core is found family and about bringing people together with love and kindness no matter your differences. hiro mashima modeled the guild off of his own experiences growing up and his friendships. from the very first episode we’re taught that bonds mean a lot in the fairy tail guild and that they don’t associate with people who treat others (especially friends) poorly.

each fight they consider what will happen if they lose and it always results in the guild getting hurt. because of this fear it drives them to do better and perform better. fights within the guild are never serious and usually ends in a quick or unlikely result literally because they don’t have that drive of needing to protect their friends. natsu vs erza for example, always ends very quickly with natsu on the ground and erza unscathed whereas in a real genuine fight they would both be insanely wounded. or in the s-class trials when juvia is fighting erza, she doesn’t want to hurt a friend and therefore her fighting isn’t top notch. the power of friendship works very well in the world of fairy tail. it is the same reason they remain the number one guild and usually what pushes other guilds to be better, like sabertooth.

there are definitely genuine instances of plot armor in fairy tail and i will not pretend there isnt (makarov death scare at least 4 times, erza vs azuma, etc.) but to ignore what the show is at it’s core just isn’t fair tbh
