There needs to be more drama where most of the characters are over the age of 50. I want to watch two mortal enemies that have had beef with each other for like 45 years, and they still want to fucking kill each other, but as much as they both fucking hate it, they now have mutual grandchildren.

#im still so sad eod didn't get a proper living world #because i could have watched joon and chul-moo go at it forever #the writers at anet were really like okay so there's these two uber rich people who are both highly skilled engineers #(one is from an old aristocratic family that still has a lot of power and the other thought she was a commoner growing up)#(and then learned she was the empress' half sister)#they started a tech company together as kindred spirits in their twenties and it grew to be the most successful in the world #until they had a massive falling out - joon due to her excellent legal skills kept the company in the divorce #chul-moo decided to form a gang of rebel engineers that scavenge tech and repurpose it towards less legal and/or ethical pursuits #and then after a decade of that rivalry chul-moo ends up adopting this disabled trans teenage engineer he found on the street (yao)#who still considers that gang their family but ended up leaving it to go work for joon's company and build advanced prosthetics #she also has a soft spot for the kid and also chul-moo has been actively trying to keep his gang from killing yao as a traitor #and it's yao that your character meets and talks to the most! but then you realise they have the most ridiculous family ever #and quite frankly they're the only thing holding this continent together #bc if they take a day off joon and chul-moo WILL try to kill each other with giant robots #at one point another character calls it a fucked up little family and with yao as the kid #and yao in the most haggard voice just corrects to 'the marriage counsellor.'#and then arenanet just expects us to move on to a different storyline like this wasn't the most compelling thing ever written

Thinking about icebrood again. I think Smodur's downfall could have been really, really good if they had presented it slightly differently. I think Smodur was so terrible a war criminal because he was so good a charr. The legions are at a turning point where they're not fighting against everyone anymore. They've made peace and now allied with humans. They've reunited with the flame legion. The nature of their society is changing in ways that are, historically, very un-charr-like, and Smodur is pretty much the model for a perfect charr. Instead of having him be reckless and aggressive in a way that doesn't quite fit his earlier characterization, it would make more sense if he was coming from a place of "We've never shown mercy to our enemies before. Why should that change just because the enemy is other charr? It's standard in the legions to kill your superior to take their rank. Killing our brothers and sisters is nothing new. Didn't you yourself just attack Bangar at the all legion rally, Rytlock?" It's not that he changed for the worse, it's that the world is changing around him. The only thing separating him from the dominion isn't a difference in ideology, just that the dominion happen to be traitors to the legions, and traitors get executed. It's his job to execute them. "Why do you all look so horrified at me now? I'm just doing what we've always been doing. You do it too. Don't act like you feel guilty." There could have even been unique dialogue for charr commanders challenging them, for example if they chose to execute their father in the personal story

Do you think papers from Rata Sum treat asura as the default research subject like America treats white men? They're doing "broad-spectrum" medical research but all the test subjects are asura. There's one teensy little paragraph at the end about how it might change for other races.

"The authors suggest that if the complainants want research on THEIR races, THEY should write the paper. This research was partially funded by the Durmand Priory."

Other terrible things that are probably happening in the Tyrian scientific community:

* spotting Inquest members in old papers is like spotting eugenicists in our world: there are a scary amount of them and they're often quite famous

* every biology paper on sylvari eventually refers back to that one time the asura tore apart a bunch of Secondborn to look at their guts and we all just have to live with that

* humans are constantly trying to prove their gods are real. In Tyria there actually IS concrete evidence but there's definitely a lot of speculation and conspiracy theory especially as people try to physically explain every old legend

* norn fitness advice is often just human data scaled up. This doesn't work because norn hold weight and muscle and process food differently to handle the cold

* Norn also have primarily oral history that went ignored for the longest time. Thanks to its location in the Shiverpeaks and its founder's focus on personal stories, the Durmand Priory has the largest collection of norn dialects, stories, and culture in the world. Still, hundreds of languages and legends have doubtlessly been lost to Jormag

* Bangar's Minister of Morale introduced a ton of fraudulent research falsely glamorizing charr biology, culture, and ferocity. The Legions haven't fought this as much as they probably should because fear is a useful weapon when half your army recently died to civil war

* The Dragon Cycle wreaks merry havoc on archaeology and paleontology. You might get preserved ruins from the last Cycle, but two or three cycles in? Forget it. Is that extinct creature you dug up really hard-shelled or did Kralkatorrik just get to it? Who knows?! You can date things by looking at which geologic layers of Brand/dead jungle matter/permafrost they're sandwiched between though, so that's cool

* dragons are also a very convenient cop-out excuse. Don't know why your ancient civilization suddenly collapsed? Must have been dragons! Can't explain that weird landmass or odd weather pattern? Dragons! Don't understand an ancient myth? Clearly they knew a secret about the dragons! It's very hard to concretely disprove and it drives specialists crazy

Not to be a bitch but sometimes people engage with fiction in the most boring way possible, and nowhere is this clearer than in videogames. Like what you mean you hate a character just because they were kind of abrasive when speaking to the player character? "They were mean to me" and it didn't occur to you to wonder why? Like, what might their attitude toward you reveal about the world? About the social dynamics within it? About their own perspectives and backgrounds and personalities? Does it even occur you to ask? Would you only have liked them if they bowed to your presence and talked about how great you are? Like I'm sorry but you're so boring. How boring fiction would be if it cathered to you

#this is braham eirsson. to me #like i know half the fandom doesn't realise how young he is bc a) he's black #and b) he's from a species that looks mostly human but tend to be excessively muscular #(so with a little help from racism most people read him as older than he is)#but like. hi here's a kid you met as a teenager doing his best to save his settlement from attackers by himself #his mother is a famous adventurer and hero who depending on the character you're playing may or may not have been your mentor #but also she left him with his father when he was 7 to go world saving and then his father died and she didn't know #so he's grown up without both parents and has very complicated feelings towards her #and then when he's 19 he gets to know her for a tiny amount of time before she dies in a fight you were also in and couldn't save her #so he's now incredibly alone and for a lot of reasons feeling like he has to live up to her name and be the one to save the world now #and i love him as a character so that's fun to see!#but unfortunately he may have yelled at you one (1) time and implied you were responsible for his mother's death #(still a 19yo! maaaybe 20! dealing with a lot!)#and the fandom decided he's a whiny baby and the complete scum of the earth #and it was SO annoying. none of you fuckers deserve him

Incredibly disheartening to look up "low intensity" builds and find a bunch of threads of people saying that LI builds are "just for lazy people not interested in getting good."

Those builds are great for people with low mobility, poor memories, not a lot of time to spend just memorizing builds, multiple varieties of physical and mental disabilities, or even just. Not wanting to have to work for the time spent on a full time job to learn to "get good."

This game isn't my job. I have poor reflexes and, due to past Issues in my life, a poor memory. These builds are amazing for me!

It makes me sad to think this kind of mindset is what keeps people from trying raids at all. I know it intimidated me a lot. But I'm finally trying and have a good group of people who get me.

And I'll use this moment to hype AW2! They're updating a bunch of their builds at the moment but they've got some great stuff.

#oh neat that there's a site for that!#my guild (myself included) has been working the last couple months to make our own accessible builds #(rating them on different scales of easy rotation/low APM/survivability/flexibility)#and yeah i'm always very honored when one of my friends who finds keeping up with the meta difficult #opts to bring the 22k dps +group support auto-attack-only scrapper i designed #but yeah no everyone should be able to raids #and i support people having as many avenues as possible to find something they feel confident playing

#unfortunately i am the some sins can never be forgiven tangled depths liker #maybe i just start giving tours maybe this is my universal purpose #tell me where you're trying to go and not only can i get you there #i can tell you the three quickest ways to get there and also point out the holes in the map we pass along the way #(tangled depths has so many holes it's hilariously easy to get out of bounds)#(i like to visit the innards of this map for fun sometimes)#i do however feel this way about lowland shore #that map serves exclusively as a bridge to janthir syntri to me
