SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY: Imitation and Aggression

The Social Learning Theory, or also known as Observational Learning (or Modeling),  is “the theory that we learn social behavior (e.g., aggression) by observing others & imitating them.”

In Observational Learning, children observe the people around them behaving in various ways. This is illustrated during the famous Bobo Doll Experiment. (Bandura, 1961).

In society, children are surrounded by many influential models, such as their parents, guardians & the other members of the family that the child interacts with at home, characters on children’s TV/Movies, social media, friends within their peer group and the teachers at school.  These models provide examples of behavior to observe and imitate. 

Children pay attention to some of these people (models) and encode their behavior.  At a later time, they may imitate the behavior they have observed.  They may do this regardless of whether the behavior is “gender appropriate” or not, but there are a number of processes that make it more likely that a child will reproduce the behavior that its society deems appropriate for its gender.

Through the act of imitation or observation, children learn how to behave aggressively. Therefore, the act of bullying is a learned behavior, because whatever behavior the adults show, may easily be imitated & adapted by these children. So, it is VITAL for parents/guardians/caregivers/nannies to be able to show a good example.

BULLYING

Part 2

INTRODUCTION

In preparation for my first blog, I decided to start off with a topic that greatly concerns our society today. So, I researched for related literature and I came across some readings about BULLYING. And to my dismay, I was saddened to find out that a child as young as 10 years old could even think of killing herself because… SHE WAS BULLIED!

Like for instance, Paris Jackson, who became a victim of CYBER BULLYING, self-harming, and sexual assault, attempted to commit suicide. She is the only daughter of famous pop singer, the late Michael Jackson & Debbie Rowe. It was also mentioned in reports that she felt “alone” at home.

“There are many kinds of Abuse: (1) Physical Abuse (such as in battering relationships); (2) Sexual Abuse (as in rape & incest); and, (3) Emotional Abuse (as when parents ridicule their children). Each of these forms of abuse can contribute to long-term Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)."

Let me add 1 more kind of abuse: VERBAL ABUSE.  Verbal abuse (also known as reviling or "verbal bullying") is described as a negative defining statement told to the victim or about the victim, or by withholding any response, thereby defining the target as non-existent.

Accusing and blaming, name calling, threatening, showing abusive anger, and age discrimination may be considered as verbal abuse. (From Wikipedia)

Sad to say, some individuals have resorted to suicide at one time or another because they cannot stand the pain or the humiliation of being bullied anymore. Individuals who resort to committing suicide just come to show that they have lost all hope to live. Any type of Bullying – SHOULD NOT BE IGNORED. Or, taken lightly. There are some who tried to commit suicide, who were fortunate enough to survive the ordeal, but not my older brother. I immediately lost my brother after he ingested expired pills. And, when we rushed him to the hospital, it was too late … There was nothing we can do. He was already dead.

WHAT IS BULLYING?

As indicated on the July 2004 APA Resolution on Bullying Among Children and Youth: Bullying is commonly characterized as aggressive behavior that (a) is intended to cause distress or harm; (b) involves an imbalance of power or strength between the aggressor and the victim; and © commonly occurs repeatedly over time (Limber, 2002; Olweus, 1993a; Nansel et al., 2001).

It can include verbal harassment or threat, physical assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of class, race, religion, gender, sexuality, appearance, behavior, or ability.  If bullying is done by a group, it is called MOBBING.  The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a "target”. A bullying culture can develop in any context in which human beings interact with each other. This includes school, family, the workplace, home, and neighborhoods. A single attack on a victim if severe enough can be accurately described as bullying, the term more often refers to a series of negative actions that occur frequently over time.
