Background:
Once a human, Dionysus grew weary of seeing the needless slaughtering of magical creatures and began to resent her fellow humans. She was fascinated by the beings that lived alongside humans, often venturing away from her home when no one was looking so she could explore and learn more of these mysterious creatures. At some point she fell in love with a young magical being, one who wished to spend their life with her.
Tragedy struck, however, as the day she promised to meet her love was the day humans attacked the forest. Her heart shattered at the sight of her lover’s corpse brutalized, and since that day she swore she would avenge them. No longer wishing to be human, she began searching for magic powerful enough to remove her current shell and become something else.
She came across Gunmar by chance, and he almost killed her…but upon seeing her disdain for her own kind he became intrigued. Curious, he promised to help her on her quest for vengeance and sought out the magic she so desired. Tracking down a magical totem–one that would enable the user to harness the energy/blood of a creature–it would allow her to become a creature powerful enough to unleash her fury upon those who’d wronged her: a gumm-gumm troll. The procedure was risky, however: while it was possible she would be transformed, there was a high chance of her perishing before it was finished.
Fueled by her fury and determination, she survived the transformation and–together with Gunmar’s forces–was able to track down and kill those who took so much from her. With her love’s death avenged, Dio found herself…wanting, not sure what to do now as a troll. Seeing her potential, Gunmar extended his hand and took her under his wing, and over time their bond grew into something more.
Facts:
Although she’s no longer human, she does still hold compassion for others–particularly young ones and those who have kindness in their hearts. While she holds no love for humans, she can’t bring herself to harm those who are sick, injured, lost, or young.
Her bond with Gunmar is strong enough that–when her maternal instincts emerge–she can and will fight him if it comes down to it. Although strong, Gunmar has learned the hard way to not mess with a troll with stronger maternal instincts.
She had been pregnant with their first child during a fight against humans, one of them having had just enough creeper’s sun to cause the affected area to turn to stone. The trauma of being infected with creeper’s sun had caused her body to react negatively, forcing her to go into labor early that left their child a preemie. As Gunmar searched for a healer, she feared for the life of her premature son and swore she would kill every human if he died before the creeper’s sun claimed her life.
At first when young Elain had been brought to them, she was wary and believed that the human would refuse. However…upon seeing the struggling whelp, she noticed the change in her expression–the kindness and compassion she once thought gone from humankind, the young girl now showed her son and agreed to help.
Once healed of the creeper’s sun and her child gaining strength to move about, Dio stood between her husband and the young sorceress. While she had once renounced her humanity, she couldn’t bear to see the one human that showed compassion to perish. In compromise, Gunmar agreed to keep Elain alive so long as she would use her magic to heal his warriors and ensure their son would continue to get stronger.
